I noticed in the beginning of 2018, Kratos was hiding his scars from the blades before their journey, having to discover them and use them again and then in the beginning of Ragnarök Atreus hides the marble he’s discovered and later reveals that he was to take responsibility of all of them. Nice little 180…

Barrett is on it with these clips! Absolutely amazing work having the clips lined up. I don’t know if this was edited after but it seems that he’s doing it live.
For the people that say that Thor didn't kill Kratos in their first fight but instead knocked him out: 1. Kratos's health dropped to 0%, 2. It showed the literal death screen and 3. The game director confirmed that Thor brought Kratos back to life in this interview: ua-cam.com/video/KLmZvFuPHYo/v-deo.html so no Thor didn't knock Kratos out he flat out killed him and revived him using his hammer and before people say that Kratos was holding back I know but it is still a huge feat when you consider that neither Magni, Modi or even Baldur could do anything to a holding back Kratos.
Between having Eric on (killing it) and having the b-roll ready at every moment no matter what they talked about, this was one of the best podcast I’ve ever watched
This was fun and interesting, but like a few of the spoilercasts now, they barely discussed story spoilers. Ex., Angrboda was brought up, but nothing on spoilers for her character, history, her using Fenrir etc., only level design philosophy and what they were looking for in her VA. I think of the dozen or so story aspects I was hoping would be discussed the only thing brought up was “who blew the horn?” And it was brushed off. Dude, Odin, nothing on the final battle, his plans, not a single word about the mask, the big reveal of him as Tyr was barely discussed. Nothing about boss battles, why dragons are enemies and not allies again for some reason, nothing about Faye or her fight with Thor, her destroying Atreus’ mural, her relationship with Brok and the rebellion, nothing about Brook’s soul stuff, nothing about Sindri’s rage at the end, nothing about real Tyr other than yeah he’s alive. No talk whatsoever about the prophecy and that being overturned, or not, Atreus holding Odin instead of Kratos!! Edit: I get why none of this is brought up as compared to 2018’s spoilercast which was all in, they must’ve asked Kinda Funny ahead of time to soft ball it and not ask too much about some of those. There must’ve been a pre-show meeting lol. I know Greg wanted to ask a ton of that stuff.
I don’t think it was Sony’s marketing telling them to go easy on the questions, they just didn’t use the time effectively. IGN has a spoiler cast with Eric out and I found that way more informative in the same amount of time. The problem is that this was more of an interview about the making of, rather than a spoiler cast. Also MinnMax is doing a Deepest Dive on Ragnarok that’s a nice book club like experience which has been nice to listen to even after beating the game.
@@jpalpha118 yeah you’re right. I listened to IGN’s as well as one on Gamespot (maybe??) and they both delved more into spoilers. So that makes Kinda Funny’s worse now that I know they could’ve asked way more. None of them asked about the mask, or prophecy paintings which would’ve been two big ones for me to want to ask though. I will check out that book club-like deep dive, that sounds fun. Thanks!
It's funny he brings up 36:30 that that is the scene where he noticed the most realism in Kratos's face. When if you rewatch his fight with Freya, his mouth moves to say her name and is in such disbelief he can't say the words but the face is fully conveying it.
Also, I don't know if someone has mentioned it before but I love the little detail of Kratos putting the Draupnir ring on his right hand ring finger. I know Christianity and Orthodox Christianity wasn't around during the ancient world and Sparta as a city-state but still, at least to me, it gave a real nice touch of symbolizing him accepting the spear as a part of him (literally made with his blood), in a way showing a "marriage" with said weapon (as Orthodox Christians wear their wedding ring on the right ring finger). Might be overthinking it on my part but it does add a nice character development detail for Kratos.
I love the Draupnir spear in the game, and I think they were totally right to not give him Mjölnir, because it would also not fit the character arc of kratos. Kiling gods and claiming their weapons is the old Kratos' way. This new, enlightened, responsible character of Kratos deserved his own weapon
1:09:55 this scene with Angrboda and Atreus that Eric mentions really hit hard for me, I felt so sad for the both of them, one of 3 or 4 times I teared up in my playthrough.
1:17:20 Idk why but I LOVE it when that happens to people and it’s even better when they’re corrected by the actual Dev!! Dude tried to call out someone for being wrong only to look like a damn fool in front of the dev. I love that! “YoU kNoW hE wAsNt iN sOuL cAlIbUr rIgHt?” Dev: - “He WAS in Soulcalibur” * Surprised Pikachu face 😮
I went into this game thinking “I know exactly where this is headed…starting with the teased Thor fight, Thor being the main villain, it setting up Odin to be the 3rd games antagonist, the prophecy etc.” only for my expectations to almost immediately be subverted in so many (of the right) ways! What I got was so much emotion, character depth + unexpected turns than I could’ve imagined & it was gripping
One of the many moments that made me do a double take because I hadn't thought of it at all was in a bit of dialogue later on when they talk about how Atreus had met Jormungandr previously and it clicked that that was the snake from Ironwood we put the soul into. Such amazing storytelling in this game.
Y'all didn't get the convo that started with Kratos allowing Mimir to tell a story? It ends with a Kratos chuckle and my favorite Mimir line "A chcukle? A rare day indeed."
Ragnarok was great, but it really didn't feel like a continuation of 2018 It has certain elements that the game did well, acknowledging Kratos's drath prophesy and showing us Faye IMMEDIATELY was nice, but the game didn't answer alot of questions like who called the Serpent while Kratos was taking Atreus to Freya, what Jormangundr said to Kratos when they met and where the freed dragons went to name a few I think if Cory was left in charge the game would've ended up a vastly different game. I loved seeing Kratos's growth from the former brutal God of War to the God of Hope he's been growing towards I liked Odin as villian, Thor was great, but i would have liked to see the monster 2018 painted him to be and not just the destroyer God who was a direct parralel to Kratos I love the lore of God of War and am currently replaying 2018/Ragnarok and am excited to see what happened with God of War 6 and surely thr God of Mischief game that will definitely be coming eventually
There's so many great emotional moments even if you don't vibe with one another will catch you. Sindri fucking got me. That was like a 1:1 mirror of when my brother died. I wasnt mean to others but I just had so much undirected anger and "fuck it I'm doing it alone" energy. I still have it honestly. I'm still doing post game content but I gotta know more about what happens to sindri.
Hearing him say ironwood is a divisive level really stuck out to me. I can definitely understand people disliking that level but it stood out to me as one of my favorite moments whether it was the chemistry, the giant boss fight, or my favorite part the silly but so earned wolf race.
A year late cuz i barely beat it lol but I loved Ironwood and in the middle of playing it and "fuck that level, its boring as fuck" lol and it was a surprise to me because I was enjoying all the lore shit and the time spent with Angrboda
It's honestly a good level but it definetely went for too long. Imo they should have completely cut the first Yalla riding section that lasted like 10-15 minutes. Also I think the Niflheim mission could have been just a tad shorter
This game, man. So fucking good. I keep describing it in my head as the most emotional game I've ever played, and not just because it got me teary-eyed and crying, but also because it made me laugh, HARD, and frequently at that. In several moments, those different emotions were separated by mere minutes. And in the scene that Eric talks about at 1:06:20, I laughed and cried at the same time because it was just so *perfect* played against everything that I'd spent the last 50 or so hours playing. Brilliant game, one for the ages.
Finished the mainline story last night, and came right to this video. Really enjoyed the discussion, as makes you appreciate what a monumental piece of work this was for the team. Kudos to all of them for their efforts! As for the game itself, I have some mixed feelings coming out of it. It is incredibly fun to play, and the moment to moment gameplay is such a ride. The story didn't always hit, but I feel that was also due to my playstyle where I took big breaks from the main story to spend a lot of time on the excellent side content. It really helped flesh out the world and lore, but took away from the urgency of the main story. The Atreus solo sections were fine, as I thought they were good for progressing the story. However, unlike the KF guys, I just did not enjoy playing the character as much. His controls were different and novel, however I felt like every combat set piece with him was pretty basic to account for his simpler combat style. It meant every encounter was relatively dull to get through, before getting to the next story beat. Again, I can appreciate what the team were doing, but it just wasn't as fun. Those are minor criticisms though, because this is still such a monumental game and I'm looking forward to going through the post-credit story. As well, looking forward to whatever Eric and team put out next!
Kratos growth as a father, man and god was my favorite part of the last 2 games. Grown ass man and alot of parts of this game near had me crying as I thought of my father whom I lost 3 yrs ago and my son/kids. Also Kratos nearly weeping seeing himself as a loved god, brilliant. I’m a big story lover in games, these are my favorite.
I appreciate this interview but I would have also liked to get just you guys taking more in depth about all of the spoilers including some of the stuff you guys maybe didn’t like that you couldn’t really talk about in this interview.
Finally beat it and man I loved this game so much. I put off beating it cause I just didn’t want it to end, but then I went to Brok’s funeral and realized the post game still has so much story stuff, can’t wait to jump into it all 🙌
I got this game and played maybe an hour a day every day. Literally right at the final chapter my wife shows up with a PS5. It is a testament to how damn incredible SMS is to really make me feel like…I cannot tell I was ‘missing’ out. I don’t think this is a ‘last gen’ game it’s just the sum of all its parts. The story from the jump, every cinematic, the characters…you are in this world from minute 1. I don’t know if I even want another GOW after this, maybe in 6 years I’ll feel different but I really hope that the most we get is a story character DLC and then these characters rest, they have earned it
The funniest moment happened to me randomly when I was sledding (I don't remember the exact wording), when the boy asked: "Father, will one day I have a beard as good as yours? Kratos: “No."😂
54:39 talking about TLOU2 I’ve accepted their ending. Wasn’t a fan for over a year. But what they accomplish from 18 to the end of Ragnorak, Kratos, Atreus and Freya not wanting revenge on Odin and accepting justice, not fully killing him worked beautifully. Then Sindri being new to the process, choosing revenge and ending him was truly beautiful. This whole journey by Cory and Matt has been amazing with Kratos and Atreus. Sticking the redemption vs going back to old ways. I loved it. Not trying to hate on TLOU2 or ND but personally imo Santa Monica just nailed it. There’s disappointment from some fans on both sides but it was so great. Kratos seeing his side of the mural and being moved, hit so good.
Listening to the episode, the Atreus levels I was NEVER able to get into a groove with because he plays so much differently from Kratos with his bow. I defaulted to a Stun loadout because it was the best I could manage with the quick R3 executes. I was REALLY excited to get Ingrid because I thought Atreus would finally have a decent melee weapon to use!
Loved that he referenced Bronx Tale, such a great movie. Ragnorak is as great achievement. Who would’ve thought Kratos from PS2 to now could change so much and bring grown men to tears.
Thank you for asking Eric one of my q's! First time writing in, glad I rushed through 35 hours of gameplay in 5 days to be a part of the spoilercast haha
the thing about this game and the question I'm sad I didn't get to ask is Thor and Odin as reflections of Kratos and Atreus. Thor is what Kratos used to be. He is the direct cause of possible the most damage of anyone in the Norse realm but similar to Greek era Kratos and how they talk about him Thor isn't fully in control of his violence. his actions are being directed by Odin pretty clearly. to the point where at the end of the game when Thor says no that he doesn't want to cause violence on behalf of his father Odin can't even process it. the idea that Thor is something he can't control has never occured to him and because of that lack of control he immediately just goes to kill Thor without any second thoughts. Then Odin is obviously the father Kratos is desperately avoiding being in these games. It's a worst case scenario for how he could end up with sending his son to fight his battles. It's not something I see Kratos ever actually falling to but it still acts as a cautionary tale for him. oh also Cory has confirmed that shovel knight is canon to god of war. their meeting takes place after Kratos has left Greece but before he is in Scandinavia.
Such an interesting perspective. I actually always thought that Thor was the direct reflection of Kratos, but without trying to change or going against his father. Basically different sides of the same coin. Both have been manipulated by their fathers and have done terrible acts of destruction (Kratos killing his family, destroying Greece; Thor murdering most Giants and forcing the rest to disappear and other things), both have a deep trauma rooted in that past and both struggled at being a good father for most of their lives. But Kratos decided to change and open himself up, while Thor lost himself in alcohol and accepted his role as Odin's executioner.
This is backed up when Kratos says he doesn't want Atreus to go to war. And how he says again and again that he sees Atreus as cursed and that he's afraid for him.
This game had some of the best moments in all of gaming. One of my favorites was showing how the prophecy played out when Odin was in Loki's arms and Kratos was standing over them. In the painting it was Kratos lying down and Thor standing over them. They chose their own fate. Only additional question to Eric: What did Thor do to Heimdal (what did Heimdal see)?
This is one of not just greatest games I’ve ever played, it’s also the best sequel/conclusion to a saga I have ever seen on screen! I cried no less than 4 times at this game, both at heartbreaking and heartwarming moments. And now we have seen not only Atreus/Loki grow into his own, we have seen Kratos finally do something I thought impossible…..open his heart not just for his wife and son, but to the world. The moment he breaks down after seeing his tryptic shrine and sees that he becomes not just the new All-Father but a good and loving god I cried just as hard with him. Thank you Corey Barlog, Eric Williams and all the great geniuses behind making this game. I will treasure it always.😭😭😭👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 P.S. I do wish that Corey Barlog was here for this Spoilercast because this was just as much HIS journey as it was Kratos’.
I’ll admit I am a little disappointed Mjolnir isn’t a weapon we can use but the Draupnir spear is awesome. Super fun to use. Just got to the post game and will probably end up with the plat when I’m done. Have really enjoyed the game. A few small complaints with the ending but nothing too big. Excited to see what the next game could be and which pantheon Kratos or Atreus will run into next. Also yeah, a Castlevania game done by Sony Santa Monica would amazing
@@bp7033 kinda but there could have been ways to mix up the combat with it. The most similar thing is the callback mechanic. In GOW3 all the weapons were similar to the chaos blades and were still fun to use. I could see a bigger issue being stuff like why wouldn’t Kratos then use Mjolnir to get everywhere then as a reason not to have it. It’s a small letdown imo since it’s arguably the most iconic mythological weapon, but one I got over pretty quick. Using the Draupnir ring to create an infinite supply of spears was a lot more creative though
@@eddaggett56 In GoW 3 no weapon was similar to the Blades. Literally none. All had completely different move sets, uses and special attacks. I get the disappointment, but it's most important function is already part of the axe. Recall, being able to let the weapon hit multiple enemies by automatically targeting them and so on.
@@eddaggett56 I agree with you. Especially considering how this was meant to be a trilogy but is now squeezed into one game, it would be cool if we had 4 weapons! ok great podcast interview, BUT we still need a spoiler cast with just the KF crew talking about the game. so much wasn't covered on their thoughts.
1 year later and watching all the interviews a second time. Really surprised that Eric mentions in multiple games that people didn't like the no cut camera. It is one of the best features of the game for immersion. I know it was prob a pain in the ass but dam it worked out well over both games.
The one line that got to me the most is when Kratos came to a realization in Asgard and told Atreus “I was wrong.”
Barrett is on it with these clips! Absolutely amazing work having the clips lined up. I don’t know if this was edited after but it seems that he’s doing it live.
I think the end hit me when they Loki and Kratos rest heads on each other and Kratos says " loki is leaving, Atreus will stay here "
For the people that say that Thor didn't kill Kratos in their first fight but instead knocked him out: 1.
Damn you guys damn you guys didn’t even talk about Broks riddle and how it comes back at after the funeral.. that shit got me
This game is a work of art from start to finish, absolutely loved it! Sindri tore my freaking heart out 🥺😭
Same. Makes the loss of brok hurt that much more.
Yeah, really let down by this. I hope they do a more in depth discussion
Thanks!
forgot how forseti was mentioned multiple times only to never be shown once. Not even during the siege on asgard
TY for this lol
So weird, a lot of questions not answered lol
The fenrir/garm was done beautifully and wholesome! :)
From a production stand point, Barrett does a great job here with the timing of having these clips at the ready

Idk why but I LOVE it when that happens to people and it’s even better when they’re corrected by the actual Dev!!
Dude tried to call out someone for being wrong only to look like a damn fool in front of the dev. I love that!
“YoU kNoW hE wAsNt iN sOuL cAlIbUr rIgHt?”
Dev: - “He WAS in Soulcalibur”
* Surprised Pikachu face 😮
That's craaaaazyyy. They thought of everything didn't they? GOTY for me
Y'all didn't get the convo that started with Kratos allowing Mimir to tell a story? It ends with a Kratos chuckle and my favorite Mimir line "A chcukle? A rare day indeed."
Just got this yesterday
Damn all that talk about dialogue and nobody is gonna bring up “Loki will go, Atreus ….Atreus remains”?? Shit hit my SOUL
Happy to platinum the game in time for this. Developer spoilercasts are always some of my favorite content you guys put out
Ragnarok was great, but it really didn't feel like a continuation of 2018
It has certain elements that the game did well, acknowledging Kratos's drath prophesy and showing us Faye IMMEDIATELY was nice, but the game didn't answer alot of questions like who called the Serpent while Kratos was taking Atreus to Freya, what Jormangundr said to Kratos when they met and where the freed dragons went to name a few
I think if Cory was left in charge the game would've ended up a vastly different game.
I loved seeing Kratos's growth from the former brutal God of War to the God of Hope he's been growing towards
I liked Odin as villian, Thor was great, but i would have liked to see the monster 2018 painted him to be and not just the destroyer God who was a direct parralel to Kratos
I love the lore of God of War and am currently replaying 2018/Ragnarok and am excited to see what happened with God of War 6 and surely thr God of Mischief game that will definitely be coming eventually
Finally finished the game and came back here to watch. What a masterpiece. Just so much care in... everything.
I'm sorry for your loss, he is still with you... realm travel is just restricted for us at the moment.
@@Pantheonslayer that was beautiful
Sorry for your loss @Mark
Hearing him say ironwood is a divisive level really stuck out to me. I can definitely understand people disliking that level but it stood out to me as one of my favorite moments whether it was the chemistry, the giant boss fight, or my favorite part the silly but so earned wolf race.
The Ironwood level was fantastic!
One of my favorite moments was that fake-out death when fighting Thor for the first time! He pulls you back out of the loading screen 🔥🔥🔥
Andy already said it but man Barrett did such a good job providing clips from ragnarok while they were talking about it. It had to be said again.
Only an hour! I want this to be like 3+ hours! =O
I'm sure Eric had a pretty tight schedule though.
The most emotional moment HAS to be when Kratos says “what do I call you” when he comes back from his Odin trip. GODDAM.
I love how many awesome moments after You beat the mark story . Seeing Thrud get the hammer , awesome .
In Sindri's house there's a bookshelf with different books, one covers is Astro Bot.
Eric is so genuine! Please more Eric's God of War games
I think Cory is taking over for GoW 6
This game, man. So fucking good.
I keep describing it in my head as the most emotional game I've ever played, and not just because it got me teary-eyed and crying, but also because it made me laugh, HARD, and frequently at that. In several moments, those different emotions were separated by mere minutes. And in the scene that Eric talks about at 1:06:20, I laughed and cried at the same time because it was just so *perfect* played against everything that I'd spent the last 50 or so hours playing.
Brilliant game, one for the ages.
Just an absolute masterpiece.
"The culmination of love is grief
To grieve deeply is to have loved fully "
As well, looking forward to whatever Eric and team put out next!
i loved every spoilercast but this is my favorite. Eric is so well spoken and i really hope he gets to make a Castlevania game.
After finishing the game and coming back to this its awesome
Kratos growth as a father, man and god was my favorite part of the last 2 games. Grown ass man and alot of parts of this game near had me crying as I thought of my father whom I lost 3 yrs ago and my son/kids. Also Kratos nearly weeping seeing himself as a loved god, brilliant. I’m a big story lover in games, these are my favorite.
Can we get a second one of these so you can actually talk about the plot 😅
Listened to the podcast, it was SO good I had to come onto UA-cam and rewatch it again. SO GOOD.
They really did go above and beyond with this game
Like Eric said: "If we're gonna do it. We're gonna do it right"
And it really shows
I appreciate this interview but I would have also liked to get just you guys taking more in depth about all of the spoilers including some of the stuff you guys maybe didn’t like that you couldn’t really talk about in this interview.
FACTS
I don’t know if I even want another GOW after this, maybe in 6 years I’ll feel different but I really hope that the most we get is a story character DLC and then these characters rest, they have earned it
The funniest moment happened to me randomly when I was sledding (I don't remember the exact wording),
when the boy asked: "Father, will one day I have a beard as good as yours?
Kratos: “No."😂
Odin was like Marlon Brando in the Godfather. Loved the interpretation.
.......Barrett was freaking clairvoyant during this episode.
I really don’t like range characters or fps so I wasn’t that big into him but not bad I wanted more from thor and Odin but still awesome game
Loved that he referenced Bronx Tale, such a great movie. Ragnorak is as great achievement. Who would’ve thought Kratos from PS2 to now could change so much and bring grown men to tears.
I haven't played after the funeral but Eric said we put alot of it in the game already. it feels like
the post main story is basically DLC
Thank you for asking Eric one of my q's! First time writing in, glad I rushed through 35 hours of gameplay in 5 days to be a part of the spoilercast haha

When I saw that spear I loved it immediately.
Great chat. Beautiful game. I loved every moment of it
This is perfect timing, I just finished this last night. I didn’t plan on doing much of the post game before, but now it seems like I have to.

That twist man!!
36:36 Him and Logan share so many similarities in history and showing their emotion through out..
my first plat trophy is bloodborne and this would be my 2nd plat trophy soon. so hype
Perfection isn’t something that can’t be added onto, but it’s something that nothing else can be taken away from it.
Man u guys really are excellent. Love this.
the thing about this game and the question I'm sad I didn't get to ask is Thor and Odin as reflections of Kratos and Atreus.
I will treasure it always.😭😭😭👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
P.S. I do wish that Corey Barlog was here for this Spoilercast because this was just as much HIS journey as it was Kratos’.
Game of the year easily
I’ll admit I am a little disappointed Mjolnir isn’t a weapon we can use but the Draupnir spear is awesome. Super fun to use. Just got to the post game and will probably end up with the plat when I’m done. Have really enjoyed the game. A few small complaints with the ending but nothing too big.
Excited to see what the next game could be and which pantheon Kratos or Atreus will run into next.
Also yeah, a Castlevania game done by Sony Santa Monica would amazing
To be fair, Mjolnir would be to similar to the Axe.
Hell, I would be happy if the hammer was locked behind a new spartan rage mode, where activating it lets you wield the hammer temporarily and unlock powerful moves.

The game released in 2020 and there was an email about Covid and how it is part of the apocalypse stuff going on.
Love these spoilercast videos with devs from you guys! Yet another great one, and Barrett or whoever did great with the cutting of footage from the game in
Props to Barrett (I assume) for pulling appropriate clips. It adds a lot.
Beat the game last night but damn that's insane about the post game with tyr!
I love the fact Sindri is still angry, Its like real life sometimes you just never make amends.
Yeah I had my reservations about Tyr. It was way too convenient/easy for Kratos and Atreus to find him, which had me feeling something wa soff. Unfortunately 20+ hours past and I had forgot, so I still got caught off guard with the reveal. I have the memory span of a gold fish apparently lol.
44 hours to get my platinum and loved every damn minute.
I hope to get another deeper conversation about this game. Loved hearing Eric’s insight, but a full deep dive didn’t really happen here.
I was waiting for the moment they would stop asking such surface level questions but that moment never came. These spoilercasts work better when there are just 2 KF people and 2/3 people that worked on the game IMO!
@@Crazeyd0g I feel like they were building rapport, which they already seemed to have with Barlog, and praising the game (which are not criticisms - the game deserves all the praise). I was just expecting more of what we got on 2018’s spoilercast.

They made it to the Crater, but Greg just mainlined the story in 26 hours. He mentioned moving the Jungle which you get to from the Crater in this Spoilercast.
It really was! Having to switch between night and day for certain parts was pretty cool too
One of my only complaint was needed more “villainy” from Thor and odin I liked some
Of the smaller stuff we see just didn’t feel like that much of a threat outside the first scene with them which was top notch just wanted more
