@Diamond. Partially correct. The actual "Goin' Band" nickname was not only because of the frequency of their travel, but the fact that they were the FIRST college band to travel to an away game. That game was @ TCU and the trip was thought up and partially funded by Will Rogers because he had seen them in Lubbock and thought everyone should have a chance to see them.
They're called the "Goin' Band" because they're one of the few (or only as far as I know) college bands that go to every single game, regardless of distance. Atleast that's what I've been told by alumni.
I don't know if they travel to all away games today, but in my tenure (late 80's to 1990), we only traveled to two away games. The Goin' Band name stuck when an announcer at an away game (TCU I believe) was shocked to see a band of the opponent's team and said "that band is going places". The Tech band was the first university band to ever travel to an away game so it was quite a shock to everyone that the university band had traveled with the football team....and Goin' Band became a source of pride and the name stuck. It was an honor to be a member during my days at Tech.
I was a member of the Goin' Band in late 80's to 1990...under the direction of Keith Bearden at that time. Goin'Band earned the nickname because it was the first university band in the country to travel to an away game. Harry Lemaire became director of the band in 1926. I believe the first game they traveled to was TCU and since that had never done in the country...the announcers were shocked to see the band of a traveling team so they made a big deal of it saying... "that band is going places" and that turned into "Goin' Band". Incidentally, the Goin' Band was also the first to have its halftime show broadcast over the radio (also under Lemaire's tenure). I'm proud to have been a member of the Goin' Band.

@thatguy2013 That tune is from the movie "That Thing You Do" . Not sure how that got started, but that's where the tune is from.
