I tried this and it worked great! I used 30 ft of 1/2 inch PVC an 2 yards of fabric per wing. DO NOT USE 1 INCH. I did that my first attempt and it was to heavy to lift. Sadly my clamps are different so when I try to swivel them forward it jabs my sides. Try to get ones like his. Also I recommend a stomach strap as well as a chest strap. It is easier to lift the wing's with your hands instead if arm straps. Hope this is helpful!
@@jboyt2431 polyester is the cheapest often, you can get a very light weight polyester or nylon fabric, where the polyester one is around €0,50 in the eu, so likely half that price if you are in USA. cotton is very heavy, canvas even more so. if you want it for practical use you can look towards nylon or ripstop nylon which is strong enough for actual use, use if you really only focus on practicality armed PE works very well since it can hold a few hundred kilogram of force per cm2 and is also ripstop, so that is strong enough for actual flight(where ripsotp nylon also is technically seen, but you need to be more careful when working with ripstop nylon. you should also add extra support to prevent the wings from going towards your back so you won't have to lift your own weight. I have experienced that for me a wing of 4M2 was enough to fly when there was decent updraft, this was however a powerkite design so it had much more speed and gained more lift from that, for actual flying devices shaped like normal wings you should look to around double that size for some fun gliding, to make it proper for actual flight there are some more things to concern like the controls mostly, but for now you can mostly rely on your weight and a slight v shape. but the wings should be constructed stronger with double joints instead of single sided ones and you likely need something behind it and in front of it, often this is done with a strong rope from the front. if you want to glide at lower speeds you can use the air foil shape in the wings, however the standard airfoil is heavily outdated despite almost every plane or flying machine still using it. for simplicity you can keep it like a normal airfoil but at the tips of the wings they go back to a flat wing as if there was no airfoil, this makes it around 80% more efficient than a traditional wing according to nasa's papers, it mostly does so by converting the force which normally forms turbulence on the tips into lift, this also allows much lower speeds while maintaining lift. the other big gain is that you don't need to add a tail for drag behind it because it stays stable by itself, this also makes it much more stable which are the 2 reasons(efficiency, stability) why it is used in the mars glider for example, however the wing type is much older than that. if you get them folding well while also having such a new version of the airfoil it would be nice if you posted the designs since it isn't something I have really tried to do yet because a airfoil like shape increases material usage, cost and weight a lot, so I didn't really see much reason to put it in back foldable wings. however since in Europe cosplaying is legal, but using things that go into the air, or going into the air yourself is not unless you buy a very expensive licence from the government, it would possibly be nice to have foldable cosplay wings which give you proper stability and more lift at low speed when flying
Now make it about 6x bigger have a tail rudder elevators and ailerons use aluminum instead of pvc and high strength dracon fabric then you have yourself a possibly working glider or a death wish
Thank you so much for this tutorial. It makes for a great prototype for a polished product. Aside from converting metric to imperial, it was easy. I also curved the two inner ribs as well. I purchased some red and black scales textured vinyl, cut it in strips, used spray adhesive and gave the “ribs” of the wings a bit more depth and realism, I also made wing dew claws to cap off the ends. I’ll post the final product when I’m completely finished but overall, I’m very pleased with the result.

So for the past two days, I've been looking at ways to make movable wings, then I see this video made a day ago, how did he know exactly what I was looking for at the right time
Ok. I've made something from somewhere before and just made it scaled to myself at the time. Use an arm length from the final shot and your own arm for measurements.
The pipe he uses looks like solar heater pipe, which isn't easy to find. Home Depot near me only carries schedule 40 PVC, too thick for this. Lowe's had the thinner stuff. I bought three 10 foot lengths in the 1/2 inch diameter, two feet of 3/4 inch, four 3/4 inch pipe clamps (I assume his fancy plastic ones are part of a solar system as well), four 3 inch bolts (for the three pipe joints), eight 2 inch bolts, four 1 1/4 bolts (for the pipe clamps, two 1/4 inch PVC 90 degree angles, to two 1/4 T-connectors. Screenshot his measurements, cut the pipes to his specs, i painted them at this stage, drill and build using your screenshot from his measurements. The 3/4 pipe goes over the vertical 1/2 pipe on the square section with the wings connecting to the pipe clamps attached to the 3/4 pipe, this allows the forward rotation of the wings. The straps, which aren't clearly shown, are connected like backpack straps to the top and bottom horizontal bars in the back square piece. The arm straps are connected to the wings. You'll see which piece as you manipulate the wings and see which one allows the best movement.
Sorry, 1/2 inch connectors. Also, as my son wore it we found the nuts kept backing out. I dropped some hot glue on them but one still came off as he was trick or treating. I'm going to try the nuts that have nylon in them, they are locking
