The 4K edition of Days of Heaven and the Blu-ray of Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet were my top pickups. I was also pleased to get a 4K edition of Don't Look Now. Another top release for me was the 4K of The Rules of the Game. I'm not sure that film needed a 4K upgrade given the quality of the source material - but since I never owned the previous Blu-ray, it was a great addition to my collection.
I heard that the 4K upgrade for Days of Heaven was nice so glad to hear you enjoyed that. I have The Rules of the Game on the blu-ray edition. To your point, the 4K in that case is really for those who don’t already have the blu-ray edition.
Great review James, thank you. Love The Servant too. La Ceremonie, you have a talent of generating interest without spoilers, i.e. these two women with mysterious pasts connect and do interesting things and I'll leave it at that:) Interesting things oh yes. Pretty sure it's still streaming on the Criterion Channel for those who may want to check out. Have Thelma and Louise near top of buy que. Speaking of great road movie with great cinematography, have you seen Until the End of the World? It's almost 5 hours of spectacular cinema, especially second half when location moves to Australian outback. I always watch it over a period of about a week in one hour pieces. Cheers.
Thank you, Pete! Yes, keeping it spoiler-free is important to respect other viewers’ experiences. I hope you enjoy Thelma and Louise when you have a chance to pick it up.
Ah, we must be of similar ages & backgrounds. 1) Folically challenged? Yep. 2) Initially confused as to why electronics no worky? You betcha. 3) Completely dig The Collectiom? Absolutely. I need to pick up "Targets", your enthusiastic response to it has really piqued my interest. Certainly agree with your numbers 1& 2, I don't have it yet, but I suspect "The Trial" will be on my 2023 Top 10. Have an excellent 2024 (that's freaky to type...) and thank you for your 2023 content. I'm glad I stumbled across your channel and subscribed.
Ha ha! We may have a few things in common 😂. Targets was so good. I hope you enjoy it if you pick it up. Glad you found the channel and enjoyed the content this year! Happy New Year 🎆 and, yes, it is crazy to think that it’s almost 2024. I remember everyone being worried about this Y2K thing and now it’s over 29 years later.
I like all of those titles you mentioned except for 2 that I haven't seen -- "Blast of Silence" which I'll definitely get during the next Criterion flash sale, and Nanny. That one looks interesting and I'll watch it first before deciding to get it or not. Other 2023 releases that I was pleased with in addition to those you mentioned are Hollywood Shuffle, Mildred Pierce 4K, The Fisher King 4K, Petite Maman, Moonage Daydream 4K, Walkabout 4K, and The Trial 4K. I also want to include a sort of box set -- Three Colors Trilogy 4K. Petite Maman, Moonage Daydream and The Trial I had not seen before, the others were great upgrades 🙂 2024 releases I am looking forward to are Blood Simple 4K and The Heroic Trio / Executioners which I have already ordered from the 30% Holiday Sale along with a $10 coupon they emailed me I assume for buying titles form their site in the past 🙂 Also looking forward to Lone Star 4K, Mudbound, McCabe & Mrs. Miller 4K, Trainspotting 4K, Nothing But A Man, The Roaring Twenties 4K, To Die For 4K and The Devil & Daniel Webster and Eric Rohmer’s Tales of the Four Seasons. At some point I'll probably upgrade The APU Trilogy to 4K. I have the Blu-ray set and like it. I'd like to see a 4K release of The Unbearable Lightness of Being. As far as I know it has never had a Blu-ray release of any kind and way overdue.
Glad you liked the titles on my list! The other 2023 titles you listed are also fantastic and speak to how good a year it was for the label. A lot to look forward to in 2024 for sure starting with the January slate!
After Hours 4K and Thelma and Louise 4Ks were my favorites.
Both excellent editions this year, Tim! Two of my favorites as well.
Love your content, James! I agree with you on all of these.
Glad to hear you enjoy the content, Leif! Thank you!
I watched One False Move a few weeks ago. AWESOME movie!!
Yes, I enjoyed One False Move as well. Good film from Carl Franklin!
Great list! The Others and Pinocchio were incredible releases!
Glad you liked my list. The Others and GDT’s Pinocchio are both excellent.

Greetings James! Great vid, some amazing picks! I didn't get too many new releases this year, but one of my favorites was definitely After Hours!
Glad you enjoyed my picks! After Hours was a really good one for sure. Not getting a lot of releases is a good thing. Sometime less is more 😃.
Like your list a lot. My top two acquisitions are ‘blast of silence’ and ‘one false move’
Hello, David! Glad to hear you enjoyed my list. Blast of Silence and One False Move are both excellent editions for sure.
James good choices I’m keeping my favourite ten under wraps until Boxing Day to be covered in a video.
Looking forward to seeing your list, Steve! Merry Christmas 🎁 and Happy Holidays.

I wanted to get Pinocchio and Blast of Silence but they weren’t released during the Barnes and Noble sale. Did you pay big bucks for them?
Ha ha. I don’t know about big bucks but more than 50% 😂.
