  • This is a video record of a sailing trip on "From Grace", a 45 ft Hunter sailboat, that started in Guadeloupe on May 15, 2017 and ended in Boston, Massachusetts May 28, 2017.
The crew consisted of the Captain, Boby, and crew members, Phil and Kim. The purpose of the trip was to bring the boat from the Caribbean to North America.
Sudden, high and variable winds between 40 and 50+ knots were encountered ~250 NM east of Chesapeake Bay. Despite having the sails reefed for 30-35 knot winds as per the weather report, the high winds shredded the sails after the boat heeled and pointed into the wind. The wind turbine was also lost. We motored through the storm and refueled in Martha's Vineyard.

Thanks for posting this video. Not enough videos of these kinds of boats sailing.
Even fewer without music drowning out the atmosphere.
    Sorry about the sail!

I am the captain of this boat. The rigging was fine, the main sail was old and in bad condition, also it was NOT an offshore sail, should have been replaced BEFORE the passage.

Boby Berman if this yacht had the proper sails and equipment would you feel comfortable with the hunter 45 as a blue water cruiser?

@@Patriotsoul hi, the answer is a simple yes. Actually I am planning an atlantic circle starting may 2020. Boston, Azores, Malaga, Morocco, Canary islands, Caribbeans, Boston.
Now I have Doyle offshore sails tested in some nasty winds and I feel very confident with the boat. My additions will be: AIS transponder that will also function as a backup gps, drogue , sea anchor..

Boby Berman I wish you all the best of luck and can’t wait to see some videos of the prep for that trip and of the trip itself.

Thanks for sharing the Hunter 45 in some less than ideal conditions...sorry about the damages.

Did you try to maintain course and have a sudden wind shift that caused the boat to heel over into the wind? Usually in a squall you would want to be heading almost dead downwind to avoid a sudden heel over. Interested in a little more info than the description had.

I recently purchased a 2002 hunter 356. So I am very interested in experience. I think it is at least encouraging that even though the sails blew out, there was apparently no damage to or failure of the standing rig. I read the full explanation, but would be very interested in any further details.

I sooo want to circumnavigate with a Hunter 45 DS. Nothing in this video deters my thought process. I would love to discuss more about the gale event that occurred off of the Chesapeake! Scary, exciting, nerve wracking but survivable. Good news for all!
