As someone with Asperger’s and who works with autistic children and adults who fall at many different points on the spectrum, I LOVE this show and simply cannot for the life of me see where, at any point, it was mocking, scornful, or demeaning towards autism or any other perceived disability. I felt more empowered, reassured, and hopeful about things after watching Derek and always will.

It doesn't matter how great something is, there will always be people to find a negative about it. I also worked with Autistic children and I guarantee people like us appreciate this show...it's the uneducated/inexperienced who just want to be pessimistic that will complain about

As a teen with assperger who is also a big fan of Ricky Gervais, I couldn't be more agree with you, this is by far (I've seen all his shows with the exception of "After life" at this moment") my favourite, this is probable the show wich I cried the most, Ricky Gervais is my favourite comedian and also one of my favourite actors/writers/directors of all time.
EDIT: I´ve seen After Life and it is my 2nd favourite show of his behind Derek

As a father of a girl on the spectrum as it were and a lovely bf with autism I find this whole series empowering . I really feel their feelings of empathy are seriously unconsidered . I blame myself ever day for bequeathing her what some people would consider a disability( because its my genetics) but she is a shining light pure and generous to a fault

This reminds me of Charlie Chaplin's speech, form The Great Dictator, where he says that ,,...More than machinery we need humanity. More than cleverness we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost....".

I love that Derek is excited coming back to give her the £10 she won on a scratchcard and he couldn't wait to give her the good news. But then once he finds out that she died, the first thing he does is put the £10 in her purse, without a second thought of keeping the money himself. It shows Derek's pure intent and his good soul. Absolute genius writing.

  • @NekoMouser

When this came to Netflix last week in the US, I'd heard that he'd taken some flack for the character in the UK as being insensitive and playing on stereotypes, but I saw nothing negative or mean-spirited in the character or his portrayal. In fact, I'd go so far as to call several of the episodes downright beautiful with moments like the ones in the clip here showing what pure kindness and openness looks like.

He shows many common tics/mannerisms of people who are differently abled- autistic or otherwise. But the show is about him, about how invaluable he is and capable he is at a job that is underappreciated and underpaid. He needs support from others, but they rely on him and his strengths a great deal. He cares for the vulnerable because he knows what it’s like to be vulnerable.

I don't cry at TV shows or films very often. I didn't cry during schindlers list for example, but Derek! I must have cried, proper blubbering crying, at least 4 times during the 2 series. When Kev talks about how Derek is the best thing to happen to him and talks honestly about himself and his pain... cried. When Derek ran back and hugged his Dad..... cried. When Joan's husband was interviewed and talked about his beautiful and happy life.... cried and then when the dog was put down and Derek cried I seriously broke down when watching that. Derek was a beautiful TV and it wasn't making fun of people with any sort of illness or mental health issues it was an honest insight into kindness, loneliness, loss and love. Ricky Gervais is a genius if you ask me and Afterlife is a another beautiful show. Tell me of anyone who has ever made anything like the office, Derek and afterlife. I think you will struggle

I lost my mum to cancer when she was just 47 years old,. This scene always brings tears to my eyes and even then I'm having to fight the urge to just cry. One line that he says that really reminds me of my mum. "It's more important to be kind than clever or good looking.." My mum suffered so much because of my father but she raised me to be kind and loving and compassionate to every living thing on the planet. No matter how much they hurt you, always forgive them.

    Been in his shoes irl.
My maternal grandmother died in her sleep, aged 97 (born 1917), whilst my parents were away on holiday 4 years ago. Alzheimers took her slowly over decades, but she had a long happy life. Theres nothing that really prepares you for seeing a close relative in person who has died only minutes before. You dont know where to look, what to say or really what to do at all, not at first. You have to stand tall, go by the book and work out the grief later.
As for me, I closed her eyes (left open as her day carers werent allowed to touch the body at all without permission), gave her a hug, a kiss on the forehead and thanked her for how good she had been to me growing up (before Alzheimers took her away). The worst part was calling my mum to tell her, especially when she was on a very rare holiday, rare as she'd been my grandmothers carer for 25 years and I knew my grandmother wouldn't have wanted her holiday spoiled, although I didnt really have a choice but to make the call. Thats just how the older generation were, never wanting any fuss.
This is a comedy show, but actually its pretty spot on for showing how it feels to suffer the loss of a senior person.
Just yesterday we buried my grandmothers lifelong friend, aged 99, a wonderful person. She was the last one of their friendship group which spanned more than 100 years. It's hard to even comprehend that fact, let alone what they had collectively experienced.

I started watching this thinking it was a comedy and was crying before the pilot episode was over. To me it's just sad but I love it.

I read reviews before I started watching this show and someone said it(the show) has a tendency to make them "laugh and cry at the same time." I didn't take it to be so literal, but it literally had me laughing and tearing up at the same time. Amazing pilot.

This was a really beautiful scene. It showed the true goodness and child like nature of Derek when he leaves the money because in his mind that is the right thing to do. It is Joan's money and she should get it, he doesn't know what else he could or should do. It's a wonderfully tragic moment.
I never liked The Office or Extras but I loved Derek and I am loving After Life. These last two are where Gervais really demonstrates his humanity and intellect.

Ricky is an acting genius. He can make you laugh your head off one day and rip your heart out another. The way he acted the crying scenes in this clip is impeccable. That must be very very hard to pull off. Hats off to him 👏

Your syntax is off but I like very much your philosophy that Gervais' methodology is simple. Simply genius. I've shown this clip to colleagues and without exception they were all moved and completely convinced. One doctor who does not know his previous work thought he was an actor with a mental disability. I had to show him a clip from a talk show to prove he was incorrect. He was totally floored by Ricky's performance. Once again I look forward to more and I only hope more people watch.

I remember the first time I saw this pilot, wept like a baby at this scene, then Nuvole Bianche by Ludovico Einaudi kicks in, you weep even more, then Karl's character comes in and you see the restored painting, and the dam bursts.

Yep, the one that earlier in the episode he says it's 'pointless' to mend it or something like that, this scene doesn't do that bit justice obviously but in the episode it's a pretty powerful moment.

My dad passed away in a nursing home last month. He'd only been there one night after being transferred from hospital with terminal cancer. He lived a full life and passed at 83; it was sad but I won't be defining his life by those last few weeks.
I've seen Derek before but it hits differently now, especially this scene. It comes to us all in the end, so don't waste the time that you have, especially time spent with the people you love.
