I never thought a poem would sum up exactly how I felt in life. Being the bottom 1% in wealth in the USA and still going for my physics PhD over the many years of starving and fighting depression this poem perfectly sums up my thoughts. I didn't want to be just another graduate I wanted to be the best and in order to do that I had to sacrifice everything even sanity, health and love to get it so that I wouldn't be insignificant. I had to go all the way, had to give up everything to be the best and it's cost me everything and I believe soon it will pay off and my name will not die like others.

This is my mantra. Seriously, SERIOUSLY contemplate the meaning of this beautiful advice. It will help you through anything. Be the strength you are, and GO ALL THE WAY!!!
I know sports are kind of the easiest route to show something like this, but could you have included other non-physical pursuits. A scientist staying up until the early morning researching, a law student practicing their case in the mirror over and over again, a photographer going to great lengths and heights for the perfect shot. There's more to life than just being physically fit and there's more ways to push yourself that don't involve lifting weights or running 10 miles, it would have been nice to see that as well.

+Red Walker i agree. alot of motivation always focus on sports, working out and physical fitness. there is more to life. i was thinking maybe a guy constantly getting rejected by girls but keeps trying until he's successful. or a soldier in war fighting for his country. or maybe even a person trying to break away from an addiction, anorexia, drugs, etc

The search for Truth means going all the way. And it can cost you a lot, friends, job, sleep, health,...and, yes, your mind.
Ligeia D.Aurevilly if one so happens, by either accident, trickery, insanity or by vanity to veiw the Void and finds only truth and not Love - one can still aspire towards it with Hope and Faith. Love exists - the same as Hope and Faith - at least for myself I was able to find them all - in the search for Truth of self. We could all have good thoughts for those still in search for the ones that never made it back and the ones still there. Let your heart go out.

I'm so exhausted... I just want to stop feeling this pain. It never goes away. It only gets worse. I never get anywhere good.
I recommend semen retention. It will give you a new found energy, and you can put it towards constructive hobbies, life purpose etc. You will encounter flatlines at times but you just keep pushing forward. It will be hard to do in the beginning but if you fight through it, it should become easier.
Isolation is a gift... and solitude, unlike loneliness, is a love affair with the cosmos ❤

@@xxfox Unfortunately I haven’t. I had a heart attack 8 months ago and am now preparing to have more heart surgery soon. I’ll do it someday when I’ve regained my health but I need to have the bypass surgery first.

I gotta say, to go all the way even if it means jail is a bit extreme. Not eating for 3-4 days is extreme too. I agree with some of what he said but i'm a big fan of this channel and had to share this. A journey toward a goal, the way i see it, supposed to be fun, exciting, legit and balanced with a healthy lifestyle. One should not end up in prison because of it.

moving to a new city, losing childhood love ...and everything started falling apart, this poem gave me hope. it made me think that I am not the only one to make sacrifices. I wish she will never find this comment, cause she ran after a guy the day after I moved to a new city, and depression hugged me like a true friend for three fucking years. every night I told myself ''go all the way, don't just die today. Now from a few days back I started enjoying my own company again like my childhood... I can sleep now...if I shine ever, then will come here again and comment. isolation is a gift, don't commit suicide.. something amazing is going to happen.....we were not the same my love, but still love you. and love you all beautiful people here..

I took what "I" needed from this, thank you.
I often find it funny, how incredibly beautiful this poem is. It isn't about the meaning, it is about him. It is his regret of living as an alcoholic his whole life, loosing everyone in the process, dying alone ultimately. The irony is, the writer never at any given stage of his life actually lived up to these words. So therefore these words are words of regret, remorse, and guidance, and through that one should be inspired. The moral of the story is here, life is too short for bickering, fighting, and falsehood. Get on with it and meet it head up, R.I.P Mr Bukowski.

I made it Bukowsky maybe simple but made my dream come true in a way..I didnt sleep in a park but there was a tme I was smkong half smoked cigarettes I found in the streets..I was so short but I kept going because your poem is my guide for years..I will go backto my family soon , but I made it ,I zm a very different person right now..Following our dreams and goung all the way is the biggest challange a man can take..

Somehow I am convinced that Charles Bukowski was not talking about athletes excelling in their performance, although it clearly applies to everyone, but more about the regular folks. I like the reading, I think the video does a disservice to it.
I am alone..no one gets me....they all left me....they dont care if im sick...if i suffer....if i cant breath......i suffer from depression.....bipolar disorder and multiple sclerosis. I tried but i cant go on.....i find peace only in my sleep....only when my eyes are shut.
Help me.....thats all i want...a hug....some food when im hungry....a kiss on the forehead. A good word that theres hope...something to shine

This hits and is so true - I used to always be with people and hated being alone, decided not to go to college regardless of my grades, wanted to always be “in” per se with the events, partying, yadayada - but after I got hit by a car standing on the side of a freeway waiting for triple A (and no, I was not anywhere near the line, got hit by a texter), about 3.5 years ago, I lost both my legs right above the knee and survived the 5 hour surgery immediately after the accident - and btw, i’m already learning to walk again on two prosthetics and i’m happier than ever (so please no sympathy etc., just truing to make a point about this one line) - but the point is, it humbled me and brought me back to my parents house after a decade of being on my own to be looked after - I thus became obsessed with learning again and immediately enrolled to College, and since then, I graduated with a 4.0 summa cum laude at Southern New Hampshire U, currently starting my MA program this fall in my continuation of Middle Eastern Studies/History at Princeton U and then (inshAllah) going for my PhD
without isolating myself from the world and dedicating myself to this craft - God only knows where I would be in life right now - probably still would be doing drugs, maybe back in prison, etc….

The poet is talking about the deepest sacrifice you have to make in order for one to be the best of his or hers ability. Given that the poet was a chronic alcoholic most of his life, perhaps these words are a self reflection of his own life and the regret of not committing to something or someone to level as describe within the words.
