Rap Monster was his old name. Rm stands for “real me”. They were once asked what they would say to themselves from 2013. This was RMs answer : “hey namjoon, don’t name yourself rap monster. You’re a human. You’re not a monster okay? You’re a beautiful human. I love you bro.”

Although everyone likes to blame Namjoon, atleast he realises his past mistakes.
RM does not stand for "real me". He made a comment during an interview saying that's what changing his name means to him, and the fans ran with it. RM is short for Rap Monster or Rapmon, which he confirmed during the same interview! When he officially changed his name, he actually came out with a statement to the fans and media, and made it official he has done no such thing with "real me". So please don't get confused by what the fans are saying. Listen to RM explain it in his own words. Here is a copy of the interview (at 12:45) and a second confirmation from another video of the group done after the video talking about the name change.

The fact that J-hope didn’t really have a rapping background unlike rm and suga, wherein he actually learned amd trained for, and he still SLAYED these cyphers.
I love that their lyrics are not just about "ho, bro and dough". Their wordplay and litterary references are just *chef's kiss*
I suggest you check out the rap line's Jungian inspired trilogy Intro: Persona (RM), Interlude: Shadow (Suga) and Outro: Ego (J-Hope) from their album Map Of The Soul: 7 (a model by Carl Jung that includes those three aspects of human psychology). There're mvs with subtitles to all three of them.

They’ve also performed each cypher completely individually at their concerts but Ik a lot of younger ARMY hasn’t seen it bc it gets blocked on UA-cam

Highly recommending "Born Singer"...yes, there's singing in it but the rap's fire and so revelatory about the effort they've put in to become successful and how they see themselves. It's a takeoff from J. Cole's Born Sinner but a great song & performance. Here's the link to a live version with English subs ua-cam.com/video/8cUQ3lF3_O8/v-deo.html. This performance is from 2015 so it's quite old but interesting to think back that 6 years ago they had no idea how big they'd become but they've always known who they were.

Fun fact: there has always been an inside joke that Cypher part 5 will be called Cypher V (the roman number for 5), especially since Taehyung (V) is a HUGE Cypher fan. But Cypher part 4 was released on their Wings album in October 2016 and since in the song they basically say they don't care anymore about the haters and that they are just gonna focus on themselfs, we are probably not getting a new one unless something happens. (In a Bighit family 2019 photoshot RM did joke that they are gonna make a cypher with a guy from their younger group TXT, but it was just a joke... probably.. honestly you never know with BTS what they will release next)

My favorite part is Cypher pt 4. I always play it on spotify blasting the h3ll out of it while shouting "I LOVE (3X) MYSELF!", the "YA PLAYA YOU SHOULD LOVE YOURSELF, BRR!" and "Click clack to the bang bang"
A few trivia:
1. I think someone may have mentioned this but RM kind of represent a new version of Rap Monster which he described as "Real Me". I feel like Rap Monster had a persona that showed a lot of anger in the past and he wants people to see his new genuine persona by leaving his past self behind and using the name RM.
Although, I'm not going to lie, Namjoon as Rap Monster did create some powerful taglines to present himself
("I go by the name Monster, welcome to the Monster plaza" - Cypher 3 | "I told you that I'm a monster and I'll be rapping nonstop" - Joke)
2. You asked about Supreme Boi who appeared in Cypher 2 and 3. He was initially meant to debut with them as BTS but stepped back to become a producer right before debut. Their pre-debut tracks featured Supreme Boi in a lot of them. He is still involved in a lot of their tracks and has often been credited in their albums pre-BE. he even appeared in one of their concerts to perform Cypher 3 with the rappers. He is still active in the rap scene too, and had often performed with RM outside of BTS' activity (before they got so big. I don't think he even has the time to do it anymore lol)
3. Each cypher was released in different albums and with a couple of years in between from each other so you can tell their growth from listening to each one. You should react to their cypher medley performance. They're always on fire when they perform the cyphers
Suga's flow is 🔥. How he flows without stopping is by far 💣 bomb
Yoongi (Suga) can actually rap his parts from the Cyphers faster than in the song but to match with the beat, he slowed it down.

YES please check out their live versions!! They have many different performances of them, some as medleys with songs like Hip Hop Lover or We Are Bulletproof but they're all so good!
Every Cypher was released on a different album and it would address whatever hate they were struggling with at the time.
Cypher 1 = O! R U L8 2? (2013), Cypher 2 (Triptych) = Skool Luv Affair (2014), Cypher 3 (Killer) = Dark & Wild (2014), Cypher 4 = WINGS (2016). Many people like Cypher 4 the best but I personally love Killer the most (maybe it's because that was the first album that came out after I started listening to them) with Triptych being a close second.
About Cypher 4, they said it would be the last one because they don't care about haters anymore; they're happy with who they are and what they have accomplished through their hard work.
Oh my goodness, this comment is way longer than planned but please, PLEASE react to the rap lines solo work!! While Namjoon's (RM) first mixtape "RM" has some amazing rapping in it, I think "Mono" is a better representation of him now so I would recommend listening to Moonchild or Uhgood from that.
For Yoongi, I would suggest The Last from his first mixtape, "Agust D" which talks about his struggles and how he's overcome them to be who he is today. I think y'all have already reacted to Daechwita from his second mixtape, "D-2," but I highly recommend his song People that's also on it!
For Hoseok (J-Hope), I would suggest Airplane from his mixtape, "Hope World."

Yes! BTS rapline are top tier. The bars, the cadence, the rhyme schemes. Top tier. Each of them bring something different that you can't compare them.
RM's verse in pt 2 and Suga's verse in pt 4 are my favorite!

All of these Cyphers are on different albums and it is insane when they perform these songs live. The crowd is so hype and rapping most of the song along with them
They have solo songs from there Map of the Soul album that are really good called Persona-RM, Shadow-Suga, and Ego-JHope. These touch on Jungian Psychology. All 7 members have really good solo songs.
They’re killing it ALL LIVE! I hope you get to see CYPHER MEDLEY LIVE. A performance you shouldn’t miss in your BTS journey, I guarantee you that.
I am super proud of the Cypher series. the immense talent our rap line showcased in this series. they sound so savage in their rap but irl they r three of the sweetest goofiest boys. this is my go-to songs to hype myself up when i'm dragging my feet to go to work. 💜

I would never think I can love rap... before meeting BTS ! The rythm, the powerfull lyrics, RM genious playword, Suga' savage flow, JHope's emotion... it was like discovering a new world for me. The cypher hit hard, and it's even more meaningful when you learn the story of BTS and all the mistreatments , prejudice and hate they faced (understanding what Suga means when he said "go back to Hawai" in Cyper 2 for exemple Lol) . My favorite song of the rap line is Outro:Tear (please react to the live at Wembley ! ) and Ddaeng. But a lot of their solo, in BTS or in their mixtapes , are really beautiful/poweful ! For exemple The last, Shadow or Daechwita by Suga, Do you or Persona by RM, One verse or Ego by J Hope ...
The live performance of Cypher Medley (1-4 combined) is very cool.
Cypher 2 is my favorite. Especially RM's part. I know it all by heart, even the Korean parts. But they are all SO GOOD!
Cyper 4 is also great! Like, they've said all they had to say to the haters. They are above it now. They know who they are. They love themselves.

RM stands for 'Real Me'. Namjoon is a highly (seriously) introspective and self aware individual. He changed his stage name in 2017 because it no longer represented who he is. Rap Monster was the name of a very confused individual who made many mistakes and had a hard time processing them and forgiving himself for them, but RM embraces his past and learns how to love himself to become a better person. You definitely need to check out Namjoon's journey to self discovery and self acceptance (he gave a beautiful speech at the UNGA about this). You can see his character development and parallels in his 2 mixtapes and some BTS songs (like Reflection and Persona), especially in the Love Yourself album trilogy (he wrote a lot for these albums).
If you watch Daechwita - please watch the Korean explains Daechwita video- not only is Yoongi fire with his raps- but the history and story line along with the visuals for the MV make this EPIC !!!! - the fact that these guys write and perform their own music is fire. Nothing but respect for them as musicians and as people

I think the thing i love most about yall listening to all cypers in one sitting is that yall can really hear the growth and evolution of them as rappers. Going from hungry underdogs, feeling the need to prove themselves to having finally made it and knowing they dont need to do that anymore. They showed off their lyrical ability from day one but cypher 4 is my all time fave because i love their attitude in it because its like “YEAH B***H WE MADE IT!!!!”

“Is it impossible to do it live?” I’m sorry but I also laughed to that question coz performing live is nothing but natural for BTS to do especially with their own music! They even do it 10x more amazing than the studio version! Nyahahaha you definitely must watch the Cypher live performances.
Also, Cypher 4 was the last Cypher the rap line did to tell all the haters that they can’t say or do anything more to BTS that could affect them coz they truly understand and love themselves more now than ever before because of their success and the love and support that their ARMYs have given them which I believe no other artist in world has ever had except for BTS and us ARMYs!

The cyphers are all on different albums and it really shows their growth over the years and they change how they address their haters. They went through a lot of hate and difficulties over the years. I feel like Mic Drop is kind of like the finale to all the cyphers. It was the last time they addressed their haters and in it they say farewell and that they will never address their haters again-and they haven’t.
So many people told they weren’t real rappers and gave them hate. The Cyphers are their answer. Phenomenal live. Who needs to breathe?

These cyphers are a directed to the hiphop artists who said RM and Suga were sell outs for becoming idols instead of staying with hip-hop, in cypher 2 Suga was directly talking about rapper B-Free who said they were basically acting like girls in an interview because they wear makeup on stage and that they weren't considered hip-hop artists anymore B-Free is from Hawaii so Suga was telling him to go home loll

RM does not stand for "real me". He made a comment during an interview saying that's what changing his name means to him, and the fans ran with it. RM is short for Rap Monster or Rapmon, which he confirmed during the same interview. He came out with an official statement for changing it to RM he did not do that with real me. I can never pick a favorite rapper from BTS because they all have such a different and unique style, sound and texture to their voice. There's usually a rap verse or two in kpop songs, but those members aren't usually *rappers* like these three are.

The Cyphers were all on different albums and that's why you also hear the progress. Supreme Boi used to be a BigHit trainee with them as well. Don't forget that JHope didn't even start rapping until he joined Big Hit. Yes, Cypher medley live... definitely possible and definitely even more awesome as you can feel their chemistry and the electricity in the air.
