My name is Shelly and I’m a 43-year-old web geek that jumped off the deep end into the makeup and beauty world. I’ve got dry skin, fine lines starting to form, and some sun spots that I desperately wish to get rid of or cover up! Cameo appearances by my rescue cats Daffy, Polly, Ziva, and Merlin.

Catrice & Essence foundations are surprisingly good for the price. Unfortunately, they always only put out 4 shades which are usually: Fair with pink undertone, Fair with yellow undertone., Light Medium with pink undertone, and Light-medium with yellow undertone- that's it! Given that they're German budget brands I suppose we shouldn't be too surprised as they've only recently entered the US market.

I agree about the shade range and of course there are medium and dark-skinned people in Europe too, but, significantly less than in the US. It's difficult to know for sure as several European countries don't collect racial data on their citizens. It's estimated that 3/4 of sub-Saharan immigrants to Europe live in just 4 countries (UK, France, Italy and Portugal - note no Germany). US Congress estimated 7 million people of African descent in Europe (pop 750 million) so that's around 1%. I'm not saying it's right that they only have 4 shades (it's not), I'm just saying the demographics in Europe are significantly different than the US and so it's kinda understandable why a European budget brand out of Germany focuses on the shades most likely to sell in their core market.
I am loving your foundation reviews. It helps so much to have similar skin types though mine is much older than yours. Just more texture for foundation to cling to I guess. I gravitate to more sheer, hydrating formulas so heading over to check out your foundation lists.

I have to say initially I was mighty concerned looking at your swatches, appeared far too yellow for you on your arm (on camera anyways) but it ended up being a good match on you 😊. PS LOVE the sparkle kitty ears, too friggin cute😍😍😍. Can’t wait to see what foundations you have in store for us! I’m really enjoying Mega Fest😊🤘🏼
Somehow it turned out ok shade-wise! A little more yellow than I tend to prefer but I'm close enough to neutral that I can get away with more undertones. I prefer the cool side of the fence :) Kitty ears were from Target!
Love that you talk about sunscreen in your videos. I rarely see the other you tubers talk about it. Everyone needs sunscreen! 😀
YES!! It's probably my biggest life regret thus far - not wearing sunscreen daily, sooner.
I'm really surprised! I saw this on someone else, and it didn't turn out so great. Just goes to show, that everyone's skin is different, and some things that don't work for some, WILL work for others. It looks great on you! A really good makeup day for you! I love the Athena palette, too! I'm definitely going to buy some of the Bad Habit Palettes; they are getting so many good reviews on YT. I'm going to try this foundation out, for the price. Yeah, that's the trick, huh? *cringe* Maybe the darkest, as I'm a couple shades darker than you. I used to be just about your shade, but my skin has grown darker as I age. I wonder how common that is. *shrugs*

I just finished up a tube of the Elf! Need to get more when I get back home! I was pleasantly surprised with this foundation.
Wow, when you did the close up at the end of the night I was shocked to see how dewy your skin was. I have never seen dew on you before, haha. I didn't believe for a second this would do as well as it did. That being said, it is still a pass for me. I'm done with mediocre at this point in my makeup life. Too much AAA's out there these days. Hey you should do a makeup collection/vanity set up video Shelly!

Hahahaha I've so actively avoided dewy foundations - but that Ilia foundation has made me change my tune a bit! Would you believe I've actually intentionally made myself look dewy a few times recently? LOL well maybe dewy is overstating it... but not matte :-D
And now that I have the new vanity set up, once I finish organizing everything into the new drawers I will definitely do a vanity/collection video!

This was a surprising outcome. First of all, I never knew Essence had a foundation and 2ndly, it looks really nice on your skin! Very smooth and the oxidation makes you look like you have a fresh glow from being out in the sun all day. :D While watching this review, I couldn't stop thinking about Catrice's foundation with only 4 shades, except it's on the opposite end of the spectrum being very matte. I'll have to check this one out, I dig a dewy finish! :)
I hate to say I was surprised because that makes it sound like I thought it would fail, but in my mind if they only put out 4 shades, they're not sinking a ton of research and development into the line... at least that's an assumption. So yeah, I was really surprised, too!
By surprised I thought it would be more matte for younger/oily/combination complexions. I'm happy to see the dewy finish. :) But yes, the miniscule shade range is ridiculous. I also agree that it would appear that the company has not invested in research and development of the line to create a broader shade range, which is a shame because this line is fairly popular.
I've worn this makeup a couple of times now and I really like it. I agree with some of your critiques about it, it's not uncomfortable but I'm aware that I'm wearing it. While I didn't get as glowy as you did at the end of the day, it did feel slightly tacky but not to where it transferred. It did not settle into any lines, wrinkles or pores which is awesome! The shade range is atrocious but I'm happy that one of them worked for me. My Ulta has small tester tubes of this foundation so I walked around the store for 30 minutes wearing shades 20, 30 & 40 on the back of my hand waiting for them to dry down/oxidize before deciding which shade to buy. I ended up with 30-fresh honey and it oxidized to just the right shade for my complexion, thankfully. I love the finish I get with this and think this will be awesome during the colder months when my skin is bone dry. I don't notice nearly as much oxidation when my face is dryer. :)

I’ve been waiting for reviews of this one! I’m quite fair, so I may be able to find a shade match. Where I’m from an 80 is a C. A B- is an 85. When my oldest started school we lived in TX and their grading scale shocked me. 80-89 was a B, 90-100 was an A. I was totally jealous because apparently I’m still bitter about a couple 92s that kept me off the principal’s list a million years ago. This comment has gotten out of hand. 😂 Thanks for the review!
LOL I was just telling my students here on the study abroad program that I still harbor a grudge for the prof that gave me my only B in college and killed my 4.0 GPA 😂She was mad that I called her out in class on something she was incorrect on (though I didn't know I was calling her out - I was confused because what she described wasn't matching the book, and I asked for clarification... and she took it personally and had a hissy fit in front of everybody... and I never got an A after that... which was ironic because that was the 3rd class I'd had her as a teacher for, and had always earned A's... so I think she had it out for me!) /end rant LOL yep still bitter!
😂 Glad I’m not the only one! The only teacher I ever had throw a hissy fit was my sixth grade math teacher. She seriously smashed her overhead projector to smithereens with her teachers edition of the math book. 😬😂

I love this foundation. I've been using it for a few weeks. Its holds up on my 41 yr old face..... in TEXAS.
Honestly for me, I have to stick with one thin layer of any foundation. If I try to get higher coverage, everything looks like a nasty mask. Most foundations just age me if I try to build up the coverage.
If this survives the Texas heat, that is saying something good!!!
Pleasantly surprised by how nice the finish on this one is Shelly. Just went to see if I could have a look at the 2 lighter shades... and jeez, you'd think we could get this in Oz, but nope, looks like we only have the Slay All Day & Soft Touch Mousse ones here dammit! Love your eye & lip colours in this one!! So very pretty (bugger it though, that shop hush stuff is yet more we can't get here, they won't ship internationally) - oh and I really like the black off shoulder peasant top too!! Hope you're having a hoot of a time in merry ole Ireland.
I feel like I've heard good things about the Slay All Day but haven't tried it yet. So far so good in Ireland! The weather has been phenomenal! Next week we're headed to Derry and that will be a more somber experience with the various tours we have planned. Then to Galway for 4 weeks!
What an oddly small shade range... can't beat that price, though.
This is another one I was curious about. I love watching your reviews since you are close to my shade, I think I'm a hint darker, NW 13 to NW15, I'm also dry to normal.

Yep it's pretty but definitely feels like wearing makeup.
Having a blast watching your foundation fest. Essence looks great on your skin, but I noticed it oxidized. Love some of your facial expressions, Shelly. You crack me up. 😆 Sorry that the foundation remained tacky. That would drive me crazy. So far, the most tempting is the Ilia, hope I spelled that correctly, senior moment! I think it's the only one I've tried, and I'm impressed!
I like this foundation and it's sad they only have a few to choose from.
The reason I like it is because its close to skin like on my mature face and those are the foundations i lean towards, didn't have an issue with oxidation but did with the tack so I just used a good setting powder .
I'm always hopeful that they'll expand the shade range!
We are always buying the same products! LOL. I got this in the lightest shade (10 Fresh Ivory), but it’s still unopened. I seriously need to declutter my foundations!

My cats always steal my makeup sponges, too!! I can’t bring myself to use them after they have had them for any length of time, however. There’s just not amount of cleaning that can make me forget the gross places the kitties have probably dragged ‘em through!! 😉😻🙀

You are becoming my foundation guru. Any ideas for my picky 14 year old daughter (getting spots now she wants to cover up), she has mild albinism (glows white) with pink undertones. She's dry so likes a dewy finish but we haven't found one light enough, maybe this one (sounds like it might not feel too comfy though might also be too yellow toned). She uses Fenty now but it's too full coverage, she needs less heavy coverage and something that feels light and comfortable, like a BB or CC but they are never pale enough. Many of my lightest shades are 2-3 shades too dark for her. I am stumped!
Hmmmm what about the Missha Perfect Cover BB cream? It's got more coverage than a typical BB cream but feels quite lightweight, and has a natural to dewy finish. Shade #13 Bright Beige is my pale/winter shade (too pale for me in the summer). I got mine online at Target but it's on Amazon as well. I'm also thinking maybe the Hourglass Vanish stick - super lightweight but very nice coverage, and lots of shades. I've got Alabaster which is almost too light for me in the winter even, and I think there are even shades lighter than that. I just bought a darker shade, Shell, for summer.

Yes I got a second 9-drawer Alex, and then made a vanity from a couple of the 5-drawer Alex drawers and a table top. When I get back from Ireland (and finish organizing everything out of my old vanity!) I'll do a vanity/storage tour :)

Well, I think beeswax is usually a no for strict vegans. Milk Makeup actually used an effective substitute for beeswax in their new mascara.... The substitute???

I wish there were more shades... I won't buy a foundation if they don't have a decent shade range... but this one looked kinda oily to me.. that's the only thing I hate about watching on camera, it looks totally different than real life.
Yeah by the end of the night it was definitely dewy (which might translate to oily on someone with oily skin - I feel like my skin is incapable of producing oil, so anytime I look so "slick" it's definitely an interesting phenomenon!) And the camera can definitely make things look different. Usually it makes things look better than they are at a distance.

Girlfriend, do you notice the Charlotte tilbury powder oxidizing on you? I used it today for the first time (like I keep telling you, you’re a terrible influence ;) and I felt like my face was darker than normal... it looked fine when I was doing my makeup though... go figure 🤷🏻♀️
I haven't had it oxidize but I have had a couple foundations oxidize with my Laura Geller (which normally doesn't) - so my guess is that any powder could if it mixes with certain ingredients in a foundation. Trouble is, I can never figure out which ingredients don't like each other!

Assembling IKEA furniture is pure torture. I think that would more effective than so many other forms.
It's so miserable that I really don't want to ever do it again. I paid as much for a guy to assemble my patio set this summer as I paid for the set itself 😂 totally worth it!
Can Beeswax be Vegan or Cruelty Free?
