Great informational video. When I had my goats...only got up to 13, those born on my farm that I kept, kept their horns. I bought some that were disbudded. A couple I sold were disbudded at buyers request. I did not ever perform the procedure myself. I paid another farmer to do this.

I’m so glad you decided not to disbud your babies. That just seems so cruel. I’m an animal person no matter what it is and I hate to think of anyone putting an animal in pain on purpose. I am with you about disbudding. My goats all have their horns, except my dairy goat who had a disbudding gone wrong. Now she has one horn that is trying to grow into her head. I have tried banding that horn, but it does not seem to be working. I will have to take a saw to it.
Now, I did have my bottle calf disbudded by a vet, but there is a HUGE difference between a goat and steer.

The #1 reason we do not dishorn any of our animals is because those horns are the main tool for them to keep their body temperature down in the hot environment. Goats don't sweat. They need their horns to cool their body.

I'm personal against debudding, each to their own. Another con I've saw with this procedure is there's a chance the horn could grow back if not done properly. I've seen some whom look almost like a unicorn and some that grow back and towards the eye causing the owner to have to keep getting it trimmed so it don't poke their eye out. That can become pricey if you have to have someone else like a vet to do it. Especially if they have to come out instead of taking it in. God Bless ya'll.

I'm against dehorning goats as well I have seen goats with all types of horn issues When this procedure isn't carried out correctly, basically the Wounded horn buds can cause More problems as they grow in all mangled, then if the horns twere left to grow naturally

The main reason I chose to leave them on is I looked into the history of why people took them off, and then I checked into the purpose of the horns. The purpose of the horns is so much more then self defense. They regulate temperature for the goats. If they have a fever, you can tell by feeling the horns. The need to burn them off was because people wanted to, not for the goat itself. Horns are important for the goat. Glad you are leaving them on. Much better for the goats.

Horns are why we have Polled Herefords! In cows the horns hurt when they bump against you. When the vet dehorns they usually anesthetize. We had a couple of dehorned goats given to us and they wore collars, but I could see how they could choke if they fought a collar. I think it is safer to grab them by the horns. If you don't have any, put hot wire up, so they'll stay off the fence. And we've had a couple disbudded goat's that would get their heads stuck in the field fencing. I've had a horned goat get her head constantly stuck in livestock panel(hog type panel's), so we'd have cut her out & the next time she'd do it, it'd be next to the hole from the last time.

I remember when you all first got Mojo and a goat got its it’s head stuck in and Rachel told the goat just a minute and it was screaming like crazy. Mojo ran over to the goats fence and the goat had never seen Mojo before. Mojo barked once and the goat looked at Mojo and he got himself unstuck by himself real quick like and took off. Just a story I found interesting, a goat farmer I believe is in New Zealand. They time their breeding and the vet comes out to work all the babies, I think it was vaccines, deworming and de budding, they corralled them all in a small barn. The vets walked around and sedated them all, then did all the work they were doing and when procedures were all finished all of them started waking up. They were left in the barn til all were fully awake and then let out and fed. It was just a very interesting thing to watch.

Goat horns are a way for them to cool themselves because blood circulates thru the horn. In order to show goat's in our 4-H club's they had to be disbudded. I've got a few goat's that we've bought that were disbudded. With the predators we've had, they needed their horns. Though we had a mean buck (that was great at protecting his girl's) that sharpened the inside of his horns, that I wished didn't have horns. But I won't dehorn or disbud, but it is a personal thing. I used to work on a dairy farm and we used a iron like yours just had a different end on it looked like a milking inflation...only thing I didn't like was the thick smoke coming off the calves heads as I was holding lead rope and another guy burned them

I never took them off. I used my goats for pack goats, so the horns were so important to temperature regulate themselves.

If I had a larger area, I might not disbud, but I live on a smaller homestead and have to fence my goats in. I can't tell you how many times the goats have gotten stuck in that fence. When its 116, and they can't get out of the fence they can die easily. Also, the burn the iron causes is a 3rd degree burn that has no feeling so pain is minimal. I have had 3rd degree burns and know this to be true.

Your choice. People have become very opinionated and feel their way only.
Thank you for explaining the pose and cons. Your video was very informative.

Thanks for this video, hubby and I will be getting goats and I think we will go with the horns. I've heard folks talking about the cons of leaving the horns, but I think I'd rather deal with that and let them be natural.

ty for covering this topic. With more people trying to raise their own meat, milk and farm animals they may see baby buck goats as cute, playful and entertaining and may get into breeding to expand their herd, many just don't think of things like horns. Know your farmer and know your vet. There are many that can botch a de-horning due to panic and some may have to repeat the process which may not be the best for the goat or you. I'm so glad you covered this. You covered this very well!

Thanks for all of the good advice. It will come in handy when I raise goats. I have been considering the horn question and trying to decide which way to go. I like the way the horns look. I want dairy goats so I can make cheese but did not know that you might not be able to show them if they have horns. I don't think I will show them but have not decided yet.

I have a pigmy billy goat with horns and he has bruised me to many times to count. My husband wants me to get rid of him but I am having a hard time because he was bottle fed and I want to know he is not mistreated or beaten because he can be hard to deal with sometimes. How do I go about finding a home he can go to and be taken care of? My oldest goat is 14 years old she is separated from him. I have a younger Kiko I want to mate with him before getting rid of him. I think this month as soon as she goes into heat I am going to put her with him. She is 2 1/2 years old

You might check to see if you have local rescues who can help you find a good, safe home for your buck after you breed him to your doe

THANK YOU for showing that compassion and animal husbandry can live hand in hand. So sick of the mentality nothing hurts much because they’re ‘animals’.
