When starting a game focus first on getting the muscle memory in. After you get that figure out why you keep dying or losing the game. Figure out what YOU can do to stop it from happening the next time. This goes along with growth mindset because if you learn more from getting a question wrong. You will remember the things you did wrong and know how to fix it. Just something to think about.

I read one of carol dweck’s books on mindset to help me get more out of school, as I am above grade level. The book was very detailed and provided good examples to help younger people like me to understand it. I recommend it not just for gaming but if you are a “fixed mindset” person and want to become a “growth mindset” person. It really helps if you are stuck thinking you cant do something, or think you can do something but you have that voice in the back of your head saying “no you can’t” or “you’re not good enough”. I hope you buy this book as it helped me a lot. (Written by a grade 8 student).
Edit: If you read this book and go from fixed to growth I recommend giving it to any friends that you think might have a fixed mindset. It can be very frustrating to go from fixed to growth, and start putting tons of effort into something, in hope of improving, but then other people do call you a tryhard, and even though it doesn’t sound that bad it could be soul-crushing if you devote tons of time into something and then be knocked down by your own FRIENDS sometimes, and could be very unmotivating, and pressure you to give up.

Really impressed with this video. I’m turning 29 years old soon and was wondering if it’s still worth putting time and energy into being extremely good at a game. Seems like it’s mind set and dedication that’s the most important. I’m also going to bring this attitude for my college classes.

this is actually really cool. personally i dont even know if i'm to one side or the other and find myself falling into both categories (sounds contradictory but im not sure how to actually phrase it). In hindsight, I have noticed that when i tend towards the growth mindset I have often found myself suddenly able to play a certain character etc significantly better than before; whereas, when i'm being more fixed the only improvements i see are small and generally more muscle-memory based than anything. I also find when i'm being more fixed i'm more likely to lose rank and as i start to tilt and play even worse after a failure.

This subject always makes me emotional as somebody who was unfortunately raised into a fixed mindset. I am aware of the damage that has been done, but despite this, that mindset ironically makes me doubt if I can ever reverse it. Every game I have ever played where I could watch other players play around me, I have noticed that I always progress, improved, and grew at a slower rate to everyone else around me. That feeling of being "slow" . . . made me feel broken, in the bad way that I don't know if I can ever completely fix this . . .
I do know that in one game in particular, however, I had enough of a headstart to overcome this, to the point where I started looking for challenges and even managed to win a convention tournament, just for sheer passion for the game itself. That game is Mario Kart 8 (Deluxe). Yes, I know, Mario Kart isn't "competitive," blah blah, but could you antis kindly shove it and let me have this? There's even a MK8D speedrunning community which I have recently joined, and while speedrunning is, as you can imagine, a completely foreign world for a person like me, it's just another excuse for me to play my favorite game of all time even more, and so I look forward to fully embracing it . . . though, presently, I'm currently working on more relatively casual single-player experiences like Octopath Traveler.

If anyone is curious in trying the eAdvantage let me give my insight as a consumer. I tried the stuff and it seemed to be a placebo *at first* because if you look at the ingredients it is just vitamins, caffeine, L-Theanine and the ginkgo biloba plant. More on that in a moment. To begin, I personally don't drink coffee that much so the serving amount of caffeine (200mg or over 2 times the amount of caffeine as a cup of coffee) was pretty overbearing for myself. However, after I got used to the caffeine, I realized I started experiencing the effects of caffeine that some avid coffee drinkers feel; I became very irritable. I didn't think anything of it until it I researched the effects of caffeine and it's potential impact on the human psyche. Following stopping taking eAdvantage, my irritability subsided. *However,* I will say that besides the effects of the caffeine, I felt very engaged and focused while gaming and doing other things during my days using the substance. I will be taking half-dosage of eAdvantage to see if the effects of caffeine intolerance subside as the full dosage was too much for myself. If an alternate batch is created with the caffeine absent, I will be more than willing to purchase as the other ingredients seemed to help me tune in and focus on my game a lot more. In conclusion, to those tolerant to caffeine, this stuff will be a great aid in not only gaming but doing your day to day activities. If you don't drink much coffee or know that caffeine makes you jittery or sparks your anxiety as it did for myself, it will probably hinder you more than it will help you. To add- *The placebo feeling I felt on the first day was due to my mind being very engaged already due to a good night's sleep and meditation.* The stuff actually works and helped a lot on the days following. Give the stuff a try if you're used to caffeine as I think it will help you improve and focus to improve your game and climb the ranks.

During my early teenagehood, i always thought i was the worst person on the earth, just because i was bad at certain things and lacked certain qualities. Looking at myself now, it seems that i have actually become worse than i was ever before... As if this mindset about myself had engraved in me as the master goal... And my subconscious is making it happen over time... And this affected my gaming performance as well as real life interactions.... And now, i feel like i can't escape from the reality o have created for myself. Which in turn, became the reality..... One of the qualities that jad become worse was my thinking abilities... I used to think that i can't think properly in some cases, but now i see that sometimes, i can't even think of simple things now..... And now i want help, but i dunno where to look for help, i can't pinpoint the real problem....

I’ve been wondering over the last weeks since I left my side of Competitive Gaming, I kept thinking: “What is it that these players have that I don’t?” - I could’ve used it if I had that they do have at the time.
Which is why instead - I realized Competitive Gaming isn’t meant to be, but maybe Art is. When I draw, I feel more focused and more alive. Versus going Competitive - the same things still happen. I also believe I was fed Contradictions, to now I’m not sure if I should believe their words and tips, or if they’re all lies. Because, I took them, and it’s not working. Plus, I thought, if they want my Rank Points… they gotta Earn Them over my dead body (I’m not “Giving Away” my Points to them). So, which is why I stopped playing Ranked for months - the Damn Meta, and Smurfs roaming around… I just want to know: “What is it that these players have that I don’t?” - it’s something, that’s for sure… but, “What is it???”

I’m gonna be 21 next month and I feel like elementary/middle/high school tend to develope and ingrain the fixed mindset into kids. Honestly. When you were explaining being good at math and bad at basketball that’s all I thought about. School just ingraining that mindset into kids. And every now and then they say oh hey the good enough will be able to go to college essentially

The problem is no matter how hard i try i care about wining and thus hate losing. I can tell myself i need to play to improve not worry about winning or losing but after 3 losses in a row i cant maintain that idea i get too mad

Shane Doherty great to hear that it’s promoting you to play! but don’t let a loss or bad game ruin your motivation . View it as a fun experience, the skill will come along as you develop game knowledge.

I like this, I'll use this. It's hard to improve or recover from having a fixed mindset because you're so tilted. I been a fan of league for a long time and getting into fortnite. It's hard to be insanely good at those games because it's all game knowledge and decision making.

These help a lot. I would personally like to thank you for this channel and content. I personally wish to go pro but do not know where to start since I’m a console player who loves pc dominate games (R6,Overwatch,Fortnite) I’d like a video that helps us figure where to start when wanting to go pro.Right now I plan on getting a scholarship to a college in esports but that’s just a goal

I have this really bad mindset of downloading my replays of only my wins to try bolster my ego and not watching my losses to try learn where I went wrong.

Things to take away: don't have a fixed mindset where you think your abilities are dependent on your talents, instead have a growth mindset where you think you can improve
Commentator's note: i was subject to fixed mindset for a long time even today. Today i was like "i am playing so bad today, if i keep it up like this i will hit rock bottom in pool play" but it turns out i was too winning oriented at that time, instead i not get worried about losing or winning(like i used to do for a long time) and try to learn from past experiences

And I’m stumped, not only by Rank in the game i play, but also trying to understand the concept of Mindset. Where I have it in thought (to be the next known X Rank Player), but in the Phase of “Action”… Its not happening. And when I lose, I get the feeling of not only defeat, or its just me being a type of weapon player overall, but also the feeling that the Ranking System is RIGGED.
