It's kind of tantric symbolism for spiritual protection by the elements of nature which can bring the internal surge of power to face situation by eradicating negativity.

Maybe I'll finally understand why my grandmother cut down other people's trees and said she saw evil spirits in them.
Probably not, she was fucking bat shit.

How do you know that there weren’t evil spirits in those trees? Grandma may have been both right about those trees and “bat shit”! You would be batshit too if you could see evil tree spirits … madness maybe either the logical result of seeing or a prerequisite for the recognition of the “supernatural”

The Nine Syllables (九字 - Kuji ) most often referred to is of TAOIST ORIGIN. It is a string of nine words used in Taoist Sorcery and Incantations to expel spirits, ghosts, demons, wild animals, poisonous insects and protect from dangers while going into untamed forests and mountains.
Western Kids who are crazy over Japanese Comics and also the Adults who are Ninja-Wannabes have mistaken that "The Nine Syllables" (known as Kuji) is originated either from Japan or Tantric Buddhism.
The Buddhist mudras were added to the spell later. The combined technique was received in Japan from China during the Tang dynasty. It was originally used by the Onmyoji (阴阳师 Yin-Yang Masters) of the Japanese court. But during the Kamakura period, after most of the Department of Yin-Yang (Onmyoryo) was disbanded, the techniques were picked up by Shugendo practitioners (who were originally made up of both Vajrayana Buddhists and former Yin-Yang Masters). Since Shugendo is often considered a form of Buddhism (even though it is no more or less Buddhism than it is Taoism or Shintoism) the Kuji-In are often mistaken as being purely Buddhist, and the mantra as being originally from Sanskrit.
Taoist Nine Syllables were 1st recorded in the ancient Taoist Text - Baopuzi (抱朴子).
Nine Syllables (九字 - Kuji ) is first introduced in the Taoist text Baopuzi (抱朴子) a poem written by Ge Hong c.280-340 ADE). In it he introduces the 九字真言(KUJI) in Chapter 17 titled Deng-She (登涉) ( Climbing Mountains and Crossing Rivers ) as a prayer to the Liu Jia (六甲, Generals of Yang), ancient Taoist gods.
    Deng- She /登涉 - Chapter 17 - Line 5:
    抱朴子曰:“入名山,以甲子开除日,以五色缯各五寸,悬大石上,所求必得。又曰,入山宜知六甲秘祝。祝曰,临兵斗者,皆数组前行。凡九字,常当密祝之,无所不辟。要道不烦,此之谓也。

Hi Anthony I loved the samurai headhunters documentary that you were a part of and have followed you off and on since. Recently I had purchased your book ninja skills and absolutely loved it but I'm wondering where I can learn more true spells of shinobi and I'm curious as to which books you could direct me to in order to find the most information on the topic. I know dark side of Japan likely touches the esoteric topics but would there be something you'd recommend with more information? Thanks in advance for any assistance on the subject and thank your for your ever informative content.

@ersofe Antony didn't receive your comment saying thank you to him. I'm letting you know for future reference in case you might ask a question in the future. Say for example you post a comment asking him a question, he gets notifications for new comments so he is able to reply to you. Then say you ask a follow up question but it isn't a new comment but you reply to his reply as you did in this comment; he won't be able to answer because he doesn't get notifications for replies to his replies. So if you ask him a question on an older video by posting a new comment there is a high chance he will reply to you but if you ask him a follow up question by replying to his reply as you did in the comment by saying thank you Mr. Cummins he won't be able to find it. Hope this explanation helped. Antony told me he doesn't receive notifications for replies to his replies so I'm letting everyone know whenever i see them reply back to him. It's weird I know because I receive notifications for replies to replies when I engage in conversation with people on this channel. But apparently he doesn't.

An idea I tend to spend focused attention entertaining - learning the good and the bad - acting with intent/purpose.

It's the recurring and probably the best and most trustworthy guidance I ever receive - I just don't listen to my inner voice - that's for insane people - I'm just stupid :)
If someone wants something with enough clarity and will - would he/she be willing to let go and trade away a prejudice of HOW it can/will be done?

From my time studying, rolling R is closer than straight up L when pronouncing Japanese. The Japanese R is somewhere between the English R, L, and D. Rolling the R like in Spanish is in that same territory. Learning how to do that helped me to better speak Japanese, at least as far as my own ear can tell. To my ear, just saying L sounds seems funny. I can see why it's ra/ri/ru/re/ro rather than la/li/lu/le/lo.

If you're gonna try and demonstrate stuff w/ your hands it's impossible to tell wtf you're doing if you stand 30ft away from the camera while severely over-exposed. I can't even see half your fingers

@@arashvincent8519 About the Kuji Kiri. You have to understand that this run in another set of beliefs. Are you willing to explore those beliefs?
There are variations in traditions. Some use a mantra that is an invocation to a deity. Japanese, chinese or hindi.
In other traditions is a energy that comes from a meridian and/or organ. Asociated with a element energy. The hand and finger positions is meant to be accessing and connecting those energies/elements.
