- #darbarfestival #VR360 #indianclassicalmusic | Shashank’s guru T.R. Mahalingam insisted that he should avoid listening to other top flute masters of the day in order to develop his own style
► Welcome to the Darbar VR360 Festival. We’ve released over 50 immersive VR videos showcasing some of India’s finest artists performing in breathtaking natural landscapes, spanning Hindustani, Carnatic, Dhrupad, and percussion.
For the best experience use a VR headset with headphones. Experience being the sole ‘audience member’ right next to the musicians for your own private raga performance, enjoying the music amidst India’s natural world. For more info, including the full program, see www.darbar.org/video360

Born to a biochemist father in the extraordinarily musical village of Rudrapatna, in Karnataka, Shashank Subramanyam started learning early in life - some say he could recognise all 72 Melakarta scales by the age of two-and-a-half. His first musical immersions came with singing and violin, but he fell in love with the venu bamboo flute as soon as he picked it up, focusing on it from that point onwards.
He has incorporated overblowing textures and novel hand positions, and immersed himself into the grammar of Hindustani music too, frequently collaborating with artists from the North, including a jugalbandi with sitarist Pandit Kushal Das for Darbar. Over the past decade he has worked with artists including Paco de Lucia, Terry Riley, and Remember Shakti, and is today recognised as among the finest bamboo flute exponents to have ever lived.

"It’s about ‘kalpanaswaram’ - how aesthetically you can combine these mathematical structures with music." (Shashank Subramanyam)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Saramati is a curious Carnatic raga. It is notable for its ascent-heavy structure - SR₂G₂M₁PD₁N₂S in the arohanam (7 swaras), and SN₂D₁M₁G₂S in the avarohanam (only 5 swaras). This makes it somewhat akin to ‘Natabhairavi on the way up, and Hindolam on the way down’, which in Hindustani terms approximates to Asavari and Malkauns respectively (...almost like a ‘flipped round’ Kaunsi Kanada).
Thyagaraja’s ‘Mokshamu Galada’ kriti is considered to be among the most important compositions set to Saramati, and some consider the great vocalist Maharajapuram V. Santhanam (‘MVS’) to have been its greatest modern master. Its notes form the Western Natural Minor scale, ubiquitous across countless familiar genres of today.

Starts of quite well and appropriate to the "meditation" theme, although the tonal quality of the notes can be much improved. However, the second half is full of speed and gimmicks and totally reverses any "meditation" benefit of the first half.
Awesome music, video and the experience even without a VR headset

A glimpse of your presentation here is representative of skills and mastery you have already acquired over mrdangam at such a young age. Practise hard. You will go a long way. God bless.
This is not a tabla, it is a mrdangam!
Thank you for this entire project and the wealth of detail provided about the music and the musician. However, I think that ignoring the mridangist, whose skills are amazing, is unfair. You should include details about him, too.
sixthsense66able Exactly!
Agree completely. Especially when the mrdangist appears more talented than the flutist, whose playing is full of hisses and lacks tonal clarity.
@@erwinmasusu4342 How wonderful to polish our own ignorance and how unfair to make such idiotic comments - the flute playing is at its absolutely best. Hissing noice is natural a part of Flute playing and something that makes Flute a natural part of your body and mind / breath. Even an Ian Anderson used the hissing noice to make wonders with it!
@@nagarajan9766 The hiss sound definitely has its place in certain types of music - such as South american, Chinese, Japanese, and in effects some try to create, like Ian Anderson. Hissing has no place in playing a Carnatic composition. Who is the idiot here?
The hiss sound is inherent to any wind instrument. Period. Where you place the microphone is the key. liking the hissing noice or not, is ones own personal preference. In case of the above, may be the sound engineers have chosen to place the microphones close to the blowing hole and nothing to do with the artist. Also, every speaker through which you hear has its own highs and base components thereby making it sound different. don’t make uncharitable remarks on artists - they all have toiled hard to get to where they are !
Dear Darbar: You are doing a fabulous job in bringing high audio quality Indian classical music to UA-cam.
But please.... check the facts in your description before misleading people.
Shashank was never a student of Shri Mali (TR Mahalingam), although his father may have taken him to meet the legend. Shashank was born in late 1978. Mali died in early 1986. Mali spent much of the period 1978 - 1985 in the US. During much of 1985 and 1986, Mali was suffering from various ailments. There are many places where you can check who were Mali's pupils, and none of them list Shashank. One example of such a listing is in Shruti magazine's "Mali Issue", published shortly after his death. And another thing. Mali was the last person to provide a "gurukul" style of learning. He just did not have the patience, commitment or mental framework for such a style of learning. Even his most well-known shishyas, such as Dr. Ramani or Shri TS Sankaran, learnt from him by just following him around and observing whenever Mali's mood compelled him to play. Mali never sat down and taught them one-to-one.
Even the earlier biographies of Shashank never claim that Mali was his guru. So what has changed?
Yes. Shashank was trained by his father upto a certain level. Later Shashank mastered the instrument by his own efforts. One of the eminent disciples of Sri. T. R. Mahalingam was late Sri. Dindigal S.P. Natarajan who had taught Shashank's father Sri. Subramanyam. I am learning flute under Sri. Viswanathan (Muscat) who is the son of Sri. Dindigal S.P. Natarajan.
Yes true 🙏
Beautiful 🙏🏼
Thank you sir🙏🙏

To my knowledge there were very few direct disciples to Mali. Besides Ramani , Sankaran , SP Natarajan , KS Narayaan . was also a disciple. Dindugal SPN and KS Narayanan were performing together. I had many opportunities to enjoy duos concerts in early 50s

VR ke liye parallel shot karna hotahe, vr main laganese ye tera rehega
And BTW, people complaining about the sound have probably never heard an unamplified mrdangam. I had this problems with tabla players, strings, singers, jazz bassists who would not perform without close miking even in intimate settings because audiences came to expect this cheesy synthetic sound boost. The gatham is often picked up by a piezzo, creating an utterly unnatural sound. Pertaining to your beautiful video, the questions still are: where is the tanbura? Even with the unusual opportunity to look behind and even underneath the scene, it is nowhere to be found. So if this is lofty art why faking a crucial element? And why interrupting it by adds?
Hi Danyel Nicholas,
Thank you for your message - I am sorry about the adverts in the video. You see, UA-cam adverts help to support our channel and partly fund our production costs.
Filming, editing, lighting, sound etc cost a lot of money and we are a small not-for-profit charity with an even smaller team. We use the adverts at the start and end of the videos to generate a small monthly income.

Film location please?
Introductory section is fantastic, but towards the end, the gimmicks are horrible.

@@darbarfestival ok ok ok Much Thanks 💐💐💐💐💐
Dear Darbar.Pls dont put these 360 deg videos. We can't enjoy the actual music. Its an honest request. I realise you may have brought new equipment to do the same.but pls avoid it.
I agree
I hate 360 system
Do both , atleast👍
Thanks for your feedback - this is the first time that we have done a 360VR project - we are taking in feedback from our audiences … and very much appreciate your kind feedback also.
The main reason for this is to help transport people to the same environment that music was sung … we are sorry for the inconvenience.
Your attempt is good, but mic cannot capture real notes in open surrounding i guess. Anyway listening in person is totally a different experience which no recording can match.
Mridangam bass notes are muted. Compared to your other indoor recording this is much inferior.
Awesome music, video and the experience even without a VR headset
