I was doing my laundry when this came on and I spent all five minutes holding an unfolded shirt not blinking. I gotta see this live.
Mesmerizing
The show is unbelievably good
I did get to see it, when it was over, I found out I had been holding my breath the whole time...
YES - so worth it live
It’s great.
If you’re wondering, yes the entire show is like this. Unbelievably mesmerizing dance and folk and community and stories told by an ensemble of dancers set to a live band with vocalists. I hadn’t felt such childlike wonder and awe for a story with no dialogue unfolding before my eyes since I was very little and absorbing school house rock directly into my brain. I’ve been insane about this show since I saw the original run in Chicago in February, and it absolutely lives up to the hype.
I couldn’t have said it better myself. It takes a lot to capture my attention these days, but I was so transfixed on every last detail, so beyond gorgeous and beyond words
I saw it in Chicago too which made it all the more special!!!
Agreed. I just saw it in NY on Wednesday and I still don't have words to describe how very beautiful it is. Stunning? Heartbreaking? There's probably a German word. They have words for everything.
i love that Broadway performers get their chance to shine on late night shows.
Did you see the performers from SIX on an episode of NPR's Tiny Desk? That was insanely powerful good! Do a search if you really dig Broadway performances and haven't already.
Just saw this number live on stage last night. The TV spot does not capture the full range of Byron Tittle's tap as he is stuck in that little square in the TV studio. On the stage at the St. James Theatre he is unleashed, this was one of top high points of a show with a lot of high points.
WOW!!! kool!!! Thanx for sharing this cuz I was already impressed, move and awestruck. Now I know to amplify all that by 100 for the live show.
I was lucky enough to see the show last Thursday night, and this was one of my favorites, too. Brilliant adaptation of a brilliant album.
It’s so great to see numbers from Broadway shows on TV again! When I was a kid, it was the only way I ever got to see bits of theater. Thanks, Stephen, for bringing this tradition back. More, please.
It’s always great to see the best in the world perform, but that feature female dancer is extraordinary.
the singers were like angels
Her name is Rachel Lockhart. I saw the musical live and she was mesmerizing, the other dancers are good but there something extremely special with her, I couldn’t keep my eyes off her.
The show is revelatory.... Some exceptional thought went into it and given the lack of dialog the emotional roller coaster it takes you on is surprising.
Sufjan Stevens! Yes! Glad that you featured this, incredible talent!
In Awe watching this from Jacksonville Illinois ❤️❤️
Thanks to Stephen Colbert and his show for letting us experience the best that Broadway has to offer! ILLINOISE is amazing!
A woman with a guitar in her hands & wings on her back. ❤
That is TASHA! She is a solo artist in her own right, based in Chicago. I had no idea until seeing this that she was taking part in this show, super cool to see her career taking off.
Well, I should clarify - the main singer out front is Tasha. The woman next to her (with the red hair) is Shara Nova, aka My Brightest Diamond, another well-known artist who has worked with Sufjan for a long time and was part of his band on the original tour for Illinois.
IKR!!! So kool!!!
I immediately thought she (the Black woman on guitar) was Brittni Jessie (backup singer with Leon Bridges). They could be sisters...
Saw the show on Broadway and was blown away. My millennial heart was full. The queer love, the loss, grief, joy, creativity, the everything.
Illinoise had my wife and I (and the sobbing girl next to us) in tears the other night. If you've a chance, go see it... just wow.
Yeah probably not emotionally prepared, tearing up just thinking about the story they could tell on stage
Glad it wasn’t just me. There are moments that just tug on your heart so hard.
This show was genuinely one of the best shows I've ever seen on Broadway. Anyone in NY who can go see it - DO!
I didn't understand this but it made me feel some type of way
I can't say I understood it either. But I love Stevens's lyrics like "I'm not afraid / to get it right I turn around and give it one more try" In a world often obsessed with perfection, it does make me feel more normal and valued.
That’s kind of the vibe of the whole show (saw it in Chicago)
I'm about to Genius Lyrics this one lol
It may help to know that Jacksonville was a part of the Underground Railroad, helping people get free.
I’ve seen the show twice now and I still don’t quite understand it fully lol I keep going back for more, though
Great performance! Shout out to Byron Tittle, tap dancer extraordinaire!!
I woke up at about 3:30 AM, looking for something to watch. I was today years old when I just happened to turn to this show at the exact moment this was recorded. I watched with my eyes, ears and mouth wide open as the music began playing, and then the girl opened up the book. I heard every word. I watched every step. When she and the tap dancer, danced together then she closed the book, I stood up, clapped and cried. I loved it so much that I searched for it, and was excited to find out it was a repeat. How lucky was I on each and every point? I feel extremely blessed, to have seen the most moving and unforgettable 5 minute scene ever. It was beautifully choreographed, and performed with perfection. 🔥🔥💐💐👏 👏👏👏
I had the original album on repeat whenever it came out (20 years ago?). this is a revelation.
Illinoise is my favorite Broadway show of the season (and I've seen tons of shows this year). If you're anywhere near New York, please go see it and experience the beauty of what they've created. I'm a huge Sufjan fan of many years and didn't know what to expect going into it, but it exceeded my expectations in every single way
It may be the best-staged piece of theatrical storytelling I've ever seen. I was completely floored by its power. A week has gone by, and I still can't get over how thrilling it was to see. I have to see it again.
Just saw this show tonight and was absolutely blown away how perfect it was. Def see it if you can.
The lighting guy is on point, as always
This was such an amazing piece and I kid you not as soon as it started my 4-year-old stood up and started dancing with the cast she's never heard the music before I've never even heard of the musical before but the entire time she was so inspired that she tried to dance with them throughout!
Illinois is my favorite album of all time. Love that its getting the Broadway treatment.
You missed the e.
@@moniquegrace6229 the 2005 sufjan stevens album is called illinois, the broadway musical adaptation is called illinoise.
@@moniquegrace6229 Nope, the album is called "Illinois".....there is a tag line stylized on the cover "Come On Feel The Illinoise" but that is not the name of the album.
@@adamclary4574I stand corrected!
That album was my first window into his music.
Fun fact just for fun, I created a video for public speaking class in college focused on puppy mills using “All the trees of the field…” from his Seven Swans album.
It had people crying and I immediately thought “Oh… no. I went too far.”
Yet, realizing it was his music that truly hits you with immediate feelings. All the feelings.
I credit it all to Steven’s music.
Absolutely transfixing. Just mind blowingly beautiful.
Wow! The dancers are so incredibly talented.
I was literally blown away by this Performance last night on the "Stephen Colbert" Show.. I've been listening to this SONG all night and this morning since yesterday.. All Versions of this Song on UA-cam. ✌🏿😎👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
I went to the show and was just a stream of tears just from being moved. Not sad, not happy, just overwhelmed my the talent
lol, went to college in Jacksonville, IL. Love this!
I think it was the best musical act I've seen on late night tv, and I'm reaching back to the 1970s/80s. The brought us to tears.
I don't know how I'm going to go about getting to see this musical, but it is now my mission.
So glad they chose this number it got the loudest applause of the night at my showing! Too bad they couldnt translate the staging exactly, in the St. Hanes he’s in this awesome tight spotlight dancing around the edges
Always great to see/hear My Btightest Diamond... especially in the old wings and doing Sufjan songs 🥰
Agreed!! I was so happy when I recognized her, glad you did too!
Her voice is really shining through. Was not familiar - now I am.
@@AlcesAlces82 Her voice really is amazing. She's also up there in her songwriting
That was AWESOME. The footwork, the choreography, the music and the Wings on the singers!
The lead dancer is so mesmerizing! Watching her move is like watching water flowing, everything is so smooth. Interesting selection to perform, "Jacksonville" was never a standout for me on the album but seeing it staged like this has given me a new appreciation for the song.
So impressed. Didn't see that coming.
So grateful I was able to re-experience this. GO see this show!!!!
THE VERY BEST MUSICAL OF THE YEAR! BRILLIANT! GO SEE IT!
That's one of the most amazing performances I've seen in a long time! 💛💚💙
Sufjan Stevens is the greatest artist of my generation to come out of the United States.
oh the Horn section and the Strings are up on the second level above where the band plays
Awesome to see. Such strength, grace and movements they have!!!
that was incredibly beautiful in every conceivable way
Congratulations! This is incredible! My husband introduced me to your music when we were in college (early 2000's) and we listened to "Michigan" early in our marriage (you show up at Christmas for us, too). This is just so dang awesome and beyond deserving. Wish we were closer so we could see the show!
As far as I’m aware, Sufjan isn’t involved in the production itself. Looks fun tho.
Oh no, now I have to go to NYC immediately to see this in person 😢
The next video has something about giant spiders headed for NYC in its title. So I'm passing. 😂
Not the worst thing in the world. LOL! I LUV NYC! Any reason to go is like fresh air to me. See you there! 😉
@@raipa111 Oh, yeah! The freakin spider invasion... Crap! I was about to by my tickets to go in July. Yeah, I LUV NYC, can't stand spiders. Thanx for the spider invasion reminder... 🤥😬😱
@@raipa111 Many spiders are 'flying' with the help of fine strands. Almost all spiders are 'venomous' because that's how they hunt. A very similar spider from the same family is native to America (Golden silk orb-weaver).
Don't let sensational headlines spoil your journey plans!
I need this to at least tour
i saw this show last week, it’s UNBELIEVABLE! it closes soon, get there if you’re able.
My sister is treating my son and I to the show. We'll all be there for the last Broadway performance on 8/10. Really looking forward to it. Amazing talent.
Chicago represent!!
Go see it! Limited run until mid-August at the St. James on Broadway! 👏 It's phenomenal! Very moving, so emotional, and sticks with you. A series of stories until they get to the big one. 😭
Just saw the show a few days ago and, as someone who doesn't really watch plays or theatre I really enjoyed the experience. Getting to hear a full band play one of my favorite albums live made it worth it on it's own and they did a very good job. The mixing was also done really well and captured those explosive moments perfectly. Once I got over the fact that interpretive dance is inherently pretty corny, I actually found the story being told under the band to be pretty cute and interesting. I loved the production, lighting, and imagery. I would definitely recommend to anyone who loves this album.
Again, this is coming from a person who hasn't seen a play since that spiderman musical came out on broadway when I was 12
Just purchased tickets to see this! Very very excited!
I haven't seen a musical since Sound of Music in elementary school. I found this trance-like, beautiful music and dancing
Stuff like this is the only reason i ever watch late night shows...
This was the moment this show grabbed me in its chokehold and wouldn't let go until the final bow. I'm so glad I got to see it.
Incredible performance.
this is remarkably outstanding, and production was awesome too
GO SEE THIS SHOW!!! So gorgeous
I’ve always adored this song--it can bring tears. But the tap dancing goes on too long and is discordant to the flow and gentle essence of this song. That said, this is a beautiful and heartfelt rendition that mostly honors the spirit of this touching song.
being a long time sufjan stevens fan and seeing this is so surreal and exciting
I’m gonna need a broadway show for Javelin now - thanks!
Favorite song on Illinoise. Love to see it!
Beautiful! Bravo! ❤❤
campfire friends, butterflies and tap - odd but delightful mix
I love the song Chicago but never dug into the album much. This video has me instantly obsessed with the album and the musical. Utterly jaw-dropping, mesmerizing, beautiful dancing. I love how every nook and cranny of the theater is filled with dancers and musicians. Seriously considering hopping a flight to NYC to see the musical this summer.
The song Jacksonville is chalk full of references to the town. The rest of the album is deffinantly worth listening to.
I saw the show last night. its beautiful! kudos Justin Peck et al
Saw this last week. It's fantastic. Also been a HUGE fan of the album since 2006. (Since Little Miss Sunshine lol)
This was phenominal!
This song took 2 freakin decades to be recognized. Truly one of the most underrated album of the decade. ❤
This performance and the one they did on the Tony's last night, really made me want to go see this now. I'm Illinoise latest fan!
뭐라고 하는지 모르겠지만 멋있다
The show is … sublime. 🎶💚
Still waiting for the other 48 states Sufjan…
Haha! We've said the same thing!
Carrie and Lowell is sort of his Oregon album. Especially with the outtakes like Wallowa Lake Monster.
I love sufjan stevens
Breaks my heart a bit that the part that mentions Nichols Park isn’t included because it’s my favorite park but ugh I love that this song is about the town I live in
God, I love this album. Wish I could see this show!
Why am I not able to LIKE this 10,000 times?!!!
As a dancer, I wish camera operators would STOP zoom in on dancers faces or upper torsos. We want/need to see the dancers whole body especially their legs/feet!!! Just sayin...
This was stellar! Now I have another Broadway show to add to my list to see when I'm in NYC again...
Illinoise is🎉
For anyone who hasn’t heard of Sufjan Stevens… He’s been gate kept for years😅 and we release him now. 🎉
I love Sufjan Stevens so much. :)
seeing this on Broadway was a highlight of my year, life, etc. sufjan forever !!
Amazing
Wow...❤
I had to click on this. Is it? It’s been so long, I don’t know, Would somebody be using Sufjan’s? Yes, wow. Very cool.
I bet it sounded so good live with the band rockin and the live banjo.
this is so magical on so many levels and details im sure the creators and performers
cant quite fully understand
Just bought my tix, so stoked. Love this album
Yessss!!!!!
Best dance performance I've seen since Alvin Ailey in the early 1970s.
Yes, they're great. If you think Ailey was great int the 70s or now, you need to see the South Afrika group Vuyani perform the next time they're in the States. They will wipe the floor with Ailey. No offense to Ailey, I'm a dancer-choreographer and have mad luv for Ailey for who they were. Newer groups like Vuyani are just out of this world - in their own way/right. And they haven't sold out like Ailey... Just sayin...
I saw just "Jacksonville" and thought it was MY Jacksonville and went "oh no what did we do now"
I'm from the Jacksonville in the song. I had the same reaction the first time I heard it. Lol
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ perfect
Great performance Sean Forte!!!!
godlike talents
This was incredible
God my favorite album of all time got a really good broadway adaptation
Loved this song long time ❤ now a musical. Brilliant 👏🏾
Wow
EVERYONE GO SEE THE SHOW
More Likes For Stephen Colbert 👍
is there any possibility to watch the whole musical for people who can’t see this in person?
I can’t make guarantees but on Spotify they have clips of the dancers that indicate they may have taped the show at some point, a lot of Broadway shows get taped but idk if they always release them. I hope they do in this case, especially since it’s a limited run.
Then how would the production make money? It's live for a reason... The only it will be released on video for streaming is after the production is paid for via ticket sales and it's had a really long run. Just wait until the production tours and comes to your area. Or go to NYC... Booking my tickets to go in July...
@@tiwantiwaabibiman2603 i live in india. not possible for me to travel for the show. but i’m willing to pay for it and watch it online if possible
@@tiwantiwaabibiman2603 I should clarify, I saw this show off Broadway, and the chances of it going on tour are slim to 0. Director and choreographer Justin Peck handpicked much of the cast to work with, and due to the nature of this show I don’t find it likely there’s ever an intent to replace them. It was billed for a limited run on Broadway due to demand, but the limited window is likely because these dancers/actors don’t want to work one project for the rest of their lives. Though I absolutely adore the show, I can’t blame anyone for that. For that reason I think it’d be great to have a tape of it, and I don’t see the point holding it in a vault past the end of the shows run in August. I just want as many people as possible to share in the joy that I experienced there!
Anyone who knows this show, or has seen it: Who is the amazing female lead dancer on this clip? Many thx.
Rachel Lockhart!
@@Ryolis265 Thx, really appreciate it. I live in Europe, but will see what I can find of her online, and try to follow things she pursues in the future.
This was so so beautiful! Can anyone explain the context though? 🫶🏻
The action of the show takes place at a writer’s retreat. There about 5 central characters who all share the story they are writing through dance and this is one of them.
The character, Morgan, opens her journal and tells her story to the others. The book from the playbill says Morgan's story is about attempts to understand a lineage, and find lessons left by those who came before.
@@WaveDash_01 oh wow!! Thar’s so cool!! Thank you so much ❤️
Why doesn't the banjo player get wings?
Everybody knows there's no banjos in heaven 😬
Maybe he has yet to earn them, like Clarence in It's a Wonderful Life. I'm sure by closing (far away I hope) he'll have them.
Cuz maybe he didn't want them or he's not right down stage. Or because he's playing a banjo??? 🤔 Just sayin... LOL!
only the three lead singers wear wings, it’s staged it little differently in the actual show
