Contemporary thought regarding homosexuality cannot be superimposed on the times when Merv Griffin was living. Being "out" could and many times would "kill" a career in show biz. And frankly, by today's standards whose business is it?

@@joshadams7389 Your observation regarding friendship/companionship in later life is a valid one (although sex in later life can be important to some). And if they were "happy" with one another, I say again: who cares? And I do believe Eva Gabor and Merv Griffin were happy together.

Merv was extremely rich and famous. Just what mama Gabor taught her daughters to throw themselves at. And the fact she didn't have to accommodate him was like hitting the jackpot. A perfect Hollywood pairing.
Sexless relationships are more common than most people think.
Never even thought of him as gay. I also never knew about he and Eva Gabor. I really never had any reason to know anything about him

The CBS talk show has one of the silliest examples of censorship of all times Abby Hoffman was a guest,he wore a shirt made from an American flag.His image was shielded by a blue screen.From what I hear, Griffin was outraged & that was why he ended his run on CBS & moved his show into syndication as an afternoon show.
Who remembers and really no one cares.

Surprisingly, the very last thing the robot said was 100% true and meaningful. Essentially: If Merv Griffin couldn't stand up and change the perception of his own demographic, it indicates "little hope" for future generations. True. Some things have changed- marriage, for one- but there is not one single openly gay male A-list film star. In a business of music, dancing, costumes, make-up and make believe... not even one who dares come out for fear of wrecking his career.

My mom watched him every day when I was a kid. I remember her pointing out that merv obviously had a raging crush on his bandleader jack somebody and kept talking to him instead of starting the show. She lived in Hollywood during WW2 and wised up to a lot of shenanigans.

@@thomasdelvin3683 Why would I make that up? I would have no reason to do that. I have actually read and heard this being said by his fellow celebrities many, many times. How do you explain this video for example? Are you saying this was all made up, too. Can't understand why you'd say that about Johnny Carson. Never once heard anyone say that about him the way I have heard being said about Merv Griffin.
