I kno this vids from a while back, but it's really fun watching someone trying something new and it succeeding, sweet vid
Thanks! It's definitely a fun way to fish. And easy for kids if you have any young ones!
Dawmm Chucky killer , awesome streak there I can watch this vid for years 👍
Something new, slow jigging in So Cal.👍
Nice one.. just started on slow pitch jigging got my phenix rod 6.2 20-40 w torium 14
What kind of jigs you used? It is really looks effective. Ty
Dude I just got a slow pitch set up and am super stoked to get out there and give it a go!!
@@briankogan6871 nice! Make sure you have enough line on the reel. They fish to 400+ feet sometimes, which means 600+ with scope. You should do great!
Johnny Wong yeah my reel it a lot bigger than what you are using, but still small enough for me to palm
So stoked for this year! Fishing the new Del Mar next weekend
Nice ... I have the levitate 68-3 paired with accurate Valiant 500 pulled a lot monster fish on it ... fish on brother!!,
The skipper said the fish are under the boat so why you casting out?
Wow never seen a charter fishing trip like that lol
You guys would snap a gasket if you came fishing in North Queensland Australia. Glad you enjoyed yourselves on this trip
I wish I could! I'm sure our giants are tiny compared to what you guys get out there!
Wow, great quality rockfish. Was it at the opening of rock fish season?
I think they just found a spot where a school of really big ones was holding and they were hitting it every day until it dried up.
WTH... Were you guys in Jurassic Park?! monster verms!!!
How do you not get snagged dropping down over rocky bottoms?
Make sure it doesn't sit on the bottom, you should be lifting pretty much right when it hits so it doesn't drag on the bottom(varies based on drift speed and line scope). Also, I do get snagged pretty often, but when you are constantly in touch with the jig, you can bounce it out as soon as you know you're snagged. I'd guess that I can bounce the jig out of 9 out of 10 snags. The majority of trips I don't lose any jigs to snags, but there are always bad days. My worst was 6 in a couple hours.
What’s this watch in your hand for???
And where did you bay it from??
It shows what the camera on my head is recording. I keep checking to make sure the camera didn't shift. I think the model is the Sony asv200. I got mine on Amazon a couple years ago. I like the angle of the head mount better than the chest mounts a lot of guys use.
That's set up is soo new to him he doesn't know when he has a fish on
Good video thanks. What type of rod is that it had a lot of action? Thank you
Thank you for sharing and inspiring, just bought my first spj setup for the kayak, what size jig where you using thank you.
I generally use 180-200 gram for most so cal fishing. I will change the jig shape depending on current and depth. The one in the video is 200 gram.
@@socaljiggingwithjohnny8287 what size and line type ? Sorry for all the questions I’m new to this just bought my first setup
@@trippingonfaith7094 No worries, man! I've been using 30-40# braid to a 10 foot 40# fluoro leader. Trending more towards the 30# braid lately work the new deeper limited in so cal. I use j braid x4. Cheap, and the 4 stand twists less than the 8 stand.
Thank you for the video just got my first spj setup can’t wait to try it out on my kayak. What weight was your jig? Thank you.
Sorry for the super late reply! Hope you got to try it out on your yak and it worked well!
Nice job. Some great eating from that trip
Nice catches, what is the purpose of a slow pitch jig rod that has so much flex in the rod? Seems like a lot of hook sets were missed because the rod tip is too soft?
That rod was about one level light for the weight of the jig and the current. I generally hook up on most bites. I enjoy fishing slow pitch because I'm catching relatively nice sized fish on setups that weigh about the same as a trout setup.
Johnny Wong -what kind of slow pitch jig rod do you recommend for rockfish in California?
I think the most common jigs you'll use in 150-300 get of water. Are 150-250 grams, with 200 the most common, so rods in that weight class generally work the best. That would be a temple reef #2, or a #4 in other brands like Shimano and Daiwa. I haven't had a chance to fish many of the newer brands yet.
Johnny Wong - thanks, I was watching a guy give a seminar on slow pitch jigging and he said you don’t want to raise and lower the rod that you just want to crank the reel handle and it loads the rod and pitches the jig.
@@ultimatejay if you watch the videos, there are many different methods that people use. I do what I feel makes the jig move the best based on the conditions. There is no perfect or correct way to fish slow picky jigs, IMO. When the fish are there and active, you are often on a fish already when you got bottom and put the reel in gear, without having imparted any action except whatever the jig was doing while sinking.
Sick set up bro
Nice Job on the big chucks! Why did you use only single hooks on the top and bottom? What gear is that reel! 6:2.1?
I thought the max in CA is two. And these are big and beefy enough to only need two.
@@socaljiggingwithjohnny8287 correct. Maximum 2 hooks when bottom fishing for rockfish :D
East coast way of fishing for seabass In the Northeast.
Is a “chucklehead” referencing a rockfish or kind of rockfish in California?
The proper name is copper rockfish. On the boats in so cal, they go by chuckleheads, or chucks.
Any tips for slow pitch jigging?
That small reel is making you work twice as hard.
How many feet of water were you fishin?
This was around 240. The more recent videos were around 400-450. This year the depth limit is going to 600, so we're probably going to be trying some really deep spots
Hey man can you recommend an affordable option for a reel to get into slow pitch?
Great bang for the buck. You can find them used for just over $100
That’s a sick ass setup
Not sure if I wish it to be an eyebrow or armpit hair! Either or... you need some serious trimming! Just teasing....LOL! Great fishing video!
is that a daiwa kyoga reel?
Line capacity is low even with the deep spool. And the conquest definitely feels smoother.
@@socaljiggingwithjohnny8287 good ti know. Do you have the conquest 300 or 400?
300. The 400 is too wide. I wish they made a square profile 400!
I do the same setup. Except I put a squid head on the bottom
Hi! What brand jig are you using?
Johnny Wong ok. I have a Jigging world same shape as yours in pink/glow but I don’t see the color that you have. Caught a bunch of Salmon Grouper on it. But no Chucks or reds yet. Still learning slow pitch jigging. Thank you!
My favorite colors are pink and glow. I get them from the China sites, aliexpress, wish.
You need a bigger reel with more torque.
The way you lifting the fish I fear for that rod of yours
I'm pretty careful with it. Unless I drop the fish, then it might snap it.
Your jig should be a torpedo jig as you have to much scoping. You need a heavier torpedo style jig
Just don’t jig next to the guys with the rental rods, tangles all day
LoL, yeah on party boats I usually fish across the stern with the other guys who know how to, and try to avoid the cluster#!@ up the rail.
$800 setup to catch rockfish....uhhh...no thanks. Nice fish though, I'm sure others got the goods too.
What’s that Sony watch your wearing?
It comes with the Sony handicam on my head. Let's me see what I'm recording.
@@socaljiggingwithjohnny8287 Ahh, I was wondering why you kept looking at the watch. That's pretty cool.
Awesome....Nice to see some SPJ..Action in California. It is huge in our home town of Pompano Beach Florida. Looks like you are really dialed in. Great video.
