As someone who does know a tiny bit about roofing, it is not recommended to cut shingles flush with the edge of your structure. This helps to reduce water intrusion.
I agree that an overhang is generally needed. In this case the coop is positioned on a hill that gets a strong storm winds off the lake in the spring and summer. I have seen several homes lose there shingles with this exposure. I opted to add a Metal Drip Edge with a line of roofing cement before trimming. My hope is this will help keep the shingles from pulling up in strong winds and still keep any runoff off of the structure.

Did the tar from the shingles gum up the blade at all?
That happens with any hookblade no matter what. It will be less inhibitive with a powertool like this though.
There was a little bit on it, you can see at the end, but very little.
