Southeastern Trains at Sittingbourne on March 3rd 2022

2nd visit to Sittingbourne on the Chatham Main Line and the terminus of the Sheerness Branch Line from Sheerness-on-Sea

Sittingbourne station opened on January 25th 1858 and has had a bit of a troubled history with 3 rail accidents.
The first one was in January 1861 when one passenger was killed when a passenger train derailed, 17 years later in August 1878 5 people died when a passenger train collided with a few good wagons and the recent one was July 1966 when a freight train derailed at nearby Sittingbourne West Junction which ended up blocking the line for 2 days.
Todays station layout consists with Platform 1 and 2 used by services to Faversham, Dover Priory and Ramsgate from London Victoria and St Pancras International
Platform 3 is used by terminating services to and from Sheerness-on-Sea which since December 2019 nowadays provided by 3 car Class 375/3s which run hourly from the station.
Not far from the station is the nearby Sittingbourne & Kemsley Light Railway opened originally in 1904 developed by a paper maker Frank Lloyd originally opened to transport pulp materials from the paper Mill and Ridham Dock.
It was owned by the Bowater Paper Railway however it was closed in 1969 however a year later new ownership of the line was taken up by the Locomotive Club of Britain.
It was preserved in 1970 although the line from Kemsley Down to Ridham Dock was abandoned to enable the area of the line to be redeveloped.
However when the lease was not renewed the railway closed in 2008 however was partial reopened in 2010 as part of the 40th anniversary of the railway.
A year later the railway did reopen for the summer season however it was the following year in 2012 when the railway was fully back open to the public which runs between Sittingbourne Viaduct and Kemsley Down.
