So many "photography" channels on youtube are really about cameras. I was glad to find your channel and I appreciate the content you're contributing.

Nan Goldin's work is so breathtaking, evocative and powerful for me. There is nothing quite like it. I got into her through the Ballad and it's all spiraled from there. I love her later work, which is often overlooked. With Fata Morgana and Eden And After in particular, but all of her work including the Ballad, it's like her camera doesn't even exist, it's like we are just experiencing things not just through her eyes but through her heart as well. The compassion and empathy in her work is so visceral and pure and the opposite of the saccharine sunset. She's almost like a spiritual guide (which makes sense with the Virgil comparison you made). Her work is elevated but there is zero condescension or ego involved, it is so subtle. And she is a master at sequencing images and carving the story out. I LOVE HER!!!

Never seen those, amazing, thank you. Somehow in all this large-medium format, shallow depth of field, Alex Soth wannabe kind of craze these are even more appealing. Wonderful work, great channel, thank you.

Gorgeous video! I laughed when you addressed her style and how for someone non-famous would have been hard to get away with it. To me the key to this is consistency and intention. Because if an unknown photographer would have put together a book with the same consistency and intention in style as Goldin, he would have probably been taken seriously. Said that, I hope you'll be making new videos at some point!

Glad to see a new video from you mate. You are one of my favourites on UA-cam. You are one of the super rare people who approach photography from an artistic standpoint and background.

Funny how one thing leads to another on UA-cam I’m so thrilled to stumble on this channel - especially at this time - love these Goldin images and I agree entirely with this current obsession with sharpness and synthetic, soulless photos - it’s such a breath of fresh air to escape from the banality of it all - looking forward to delving into the rest.

Those words about sunsets cut me deeply haha. Well luckily for me being drawn to the cliché sunset has helped me on a personal level. I wouldn't have been there to see the sun if it wasn't for photography and I wouldn't have had the benefits of the exercise and mental health that came with the hunt. I appreciate its not always art. But I thought I'd give the other side of it

Thank you very much. Your channel has provided me a new thought process to look into a picture. The concept of fine, excellent or a good picture has changed in my mind. I henceforth look in a very different way. The way of seeing things will not be only by eyes, but with a mind and beyond. Thank you once again. 👍

Justin, thank you so much for your insightful videos. I found a book 'Perspectives on Place' by J.A.P Alexander and it was my first 'Ah hah' moment - yay there is more to landscape photography than pastel sunrise/sunsets! The book led me to read more on Robert Adams, which lead to finding your videos. So you are reinforcing what's been whirring away in my head. Love hearing an artist's perspective, instead of photo judges going on endlessly about the rule of thirds. Please do continue. You are inspiring.

Today, tonight, it already went dark, I have to give my congratulations to you: You reached a new level with your speaking and poetic looking on images today. At least for me, because, coming home from a little journey by cycle, foot, car, train and bus, I watched your new video and it encouraged me very much. You are the real observer (as Robert Frank might have called it). I enjoyed your talking and films for some month, but the encouragement was so big this time. Maybe for two reasons: I´m getting used to your voice and art of telling, and enjoy it even more. And I needed to be encouraged, because I´m at the end of an almost 7year journey with a photo-book project soon, to be exact, the following week (I have to do some layout work and corrections and this last ten days frightened me, it´s still a lot to do and all the questions (no publisher, no editor and so on). Thank you, I will send you a link or letter to the project later, and excuse my poor english, I´m from Southwest of Germany...

An excellent book. Easily found on Amazon. I am a university lecturer (photography) and this channel is very good. I sometimes show IMHO episode to the students when they start to think their opinions hold equal weight to the lecturers. I’m not sure why there’s been so few new ones recently but keep them coming. Intelligent views on the creative process.

Terrific observations. Particularly your comments on photographers being "storytellers" a word I have perpetually disliked when used in connection with photography. Are writers now imagemakers?
I concur with all your statements, so refreshing to hear someone talk about photographs with such eloquence, it's a pity the "usual" commentators are not as concise and straightforward in their delivery. You deserve a wider audience, perhaps you already have one. Here in the UK the only go to voice seems to be the man with the foundation in his name, and I don't think he speaks to me at all. Take a look at the work of Michael Ackerman, I think you'll appreciate it. Thanks for taking the time.

It's actually a Fuji XT3. I was thinking of doing a video on it despite being the guy who doesn't talk about gear! So I have to think about how to do it or if I it at all.

    • @sebastianspringbett9785
      @sebastianspringbett9785 5 років тому

You could talk about the pictures you produce with it.
I’ve used Fuji for five years. They are fine, good enough at everything, lots of dials like old film cameras, and smaller and cheaper than FF.

The narrator seems to be lurking around the shitty photography channels feeling good about himself. Probably feeling like he's figured out the "art" behind photography.
    His condescending tone amuses me.
And also, I feel like he probably thinks he's smarter than everyone else lol.
