In this weeks video I take a deep dive look at the soldier class and everything it has to offer, as well as looking at how the class evolved across the trilogy and some tips and advice on some of the best companions that pair nicely with this class.

How to easily win insanity playthrough with minimum difficulty.
Bring Tali and EDI for easy shield and barrier stripping and spam concussive shots.
Alternatively bring garrus and mod him with full weapon damage+N7 typhoon and bring Ashley with adas anti synthetic. Also be sure to mod your cryo round up to rank 6 with squad ammo for your rank 4. Best crowd control and enemy debuff for your squad.

@@dr.science_0177 Yeah, that's what I gave him on my insanity run. I could almost constantly detonate tech bursts or fire explosions so there were few occasions where my squad mates actually mattered.

If there’s one thing plenty if not all sci-fi universes have in common, from Mass Effect to Halo and even at times 40K, it all comes down to the infantryman and his rifle.
The only squadmate I need is my N7 Piranha!

I always choose Soldier, not just because it’s the one I like the best but it fits so well for what Shepherd represents. He represents the best of all the races, he is just a normal person who went on through like 10 wars worth of soldiers all before the reapers show up and unites the entire galaxy

Thanks, I've been planning to make these videos for a while, and thought the few weeks before The Legendary Edition would be a period when people would be interested in more information before the release
SHE DIDNT MADE THE SENTINEL YET! :D the most underrated class imo, probably because it doesnt really standout in any particular way at first... But I love ME2 and 3 version of that, tanky super adaptible bad boy :)

After playing through trilogy multiple times, with charge-spamming vanguards and singularity spam adepts, I see the beauty behind pure soldier Shepard. There are almost no cutscenes with Shep using 'magic superpowers', but every time he's displayed as elite commando with exceptional marksman skills and endurance. For me, it's like a cannon class, and i don't even find it boring. Definetely, soldier is my favourite, vanguard is my second!
First of all biotics are not "magic" as for Shepard never using biotics in cut scenes that's just bioware being lazy. The cut scenes are scripted for a soldier class because that is generally the most popular class and the class of the default Shepard. There are lots of things about the cut scenes that don't make sense. Characters using weapons, they can't equip in game, Shepard always using the same shitty Avenger assault rifle in cut scenes regardless of what gun you equip him with. Kinetic barriers only working in game but never in cut scenes. (Kaiden/Ashley dying from a single shot from a crappy Predator pistol even though they have body armor and most likely kinetic barriers) I never took the cut scenes seriously. because if Shepard was as powerful in cut scenes as he is in game. Most fights would be over in about two seconds.
Fun Fact: The only cutscenes in which Shepard uses biotics are all in the Citadel DLC when fighting your clone, in a Renegade interrupt in which you clash biotics and when you beat the clone they disarm you with biotics before brawling it out.

The solider is the only class with access to the revenant assault rifle in ME2. That is such a important fact to not be mentioned.
Vanguard as well I think once you get to a certain point in the story.
@@mcmarkmarkson7115 Unfortunately not. They can only train to use assault rifles at that point but do have access to the unique Krogan shotgun which is also available to the soldier.

Soldiers represent
Just got into this game for the first time and soldier commando is what i liked
When you think about it Adrenaline Rush is the only *Unique* power.
Think of every class specific ability: Tactical Cloak, Combat Drone, Tech Armor, Biotic Charge (Adepts just use plethora of Biotic powers) All of these abilities can be seen being used by other enemies, party members, or npcs in the game. Even Biotic Charge can be seen being used by Visir in Lair of the Shadow Broker. That means they are common.
Commander Shepard is supposed to be the "BEST". He/She has abilities that make them stand out above the rest, they are unique. Adrenaline Rush when you think about it is the only power that is truly unique. Only Shepard has it and thereby makes Shepard feel truly unique and a league above all else in this capability. It's their SUPER power. Their insane reaction speed that is the stuff of legends, when they're on they're ON.
Shepard is by default a soldier and in my eyes makes the most sense. Shepard's a soldier, but also the BEST soldier. There's no one that can move and react as fast as Shepard can. Shepard's Reaction time from their rush of Adrenaline is what set's Shepard apart.
There are characters in the multiplayer that have the adrenaline rush ability to. and Shepard didn't even get that ability until Mass Effect 2. When he was rebuilt by Cereberus.
@@yokiryuchan7655 logistically all the class abilities were revamped. For simplicity sake we can just assume the powers are same across all games for lore or just for argument's sake go off of ME2 on.
Adrenaline Rush doesn't give the time dilation ability to multiplayer characters.
@@pyguy7 My point is The Adrenalline Rush power is not what makes Shepard special. Ultimately Shepard's class and combat abilities don't matter. It is Shepard's character and actions that make him special. All the classes are equal. You can't really argue one is better then another because they all have strengths and weaknesses. and the reason why the multiplayer characters don't have the time dilation ability is pretty obvious. Because it is a multiplayer game. If time slowed down for one character it would slow down for every other player as well because they are all on the same server.
@@yokiryuchan7655 Maybe what I'm trying to say why Adrenaline Rush feels unique for Shepard is that Adrenaline Rush isn't a "tool" like tech armor, engineer powers or tactical cloak, or some enhancement by an implant giving him biotic abilities. Adrenaline Rush is All him, all natural. It's his natural reflexes that's giving him the edge. And to me that feels like a super power almost in it's own right. I guess to me in an ironic way, natural incredibly sharp reaction time and reflexes feel more like a super power than any actual powers in game itself.
@@pyguy7 it's an enhancement from the Lazerous project. It's not a natural ability that Shepard has. and the Human Solider in the mass effect 3 multiplayer also has this ability. I already explained why there is no time dilation because it just can't be implemented in the muliplayer. You are factually wrong I'm sorry.
I always play as Male Shepard and pick Soldier as my class. FemShep is where I usually go experimenting with the other classes
This was my first play-thru build back then. A commando Sheppard, Ashley, and Wrex. The Leroy Jenkins squad.
I always appreciate how simple the Soldier class is, in terms of the other classes; you don't have any cool dark energy-bending powers or gadgets that others would utilise, as you don't need to have them to save the galaxy. Having as many guns at my disposal allows me to do a lot of experimentation with the guns in the games. It allows versatility in your guns, and lets you have such a strong arsenal, I don't need to worry about ability cooldowns as much. Plus, it allows me to use Assault Rifles in 1st two games, and I am a go-to guy for ARs.
Honestly, it's silly that assault rifles are mostly Soldier-specific in the first two games. If anything, assault rifles should be the default weapon, with everything else being specialties.
@@dianabarnett6886 Maybe; I guess because a pistol would be all you needed in a firefight, but I do much prefer ARs in comparison.
Personally I always found soldier a bit boring in Mass Effect 1, it was an effective class but nothing special. The soldier really shines in 2 and 3 though.
I personally liked it in ME1 but thought it was very boring in ME2. Didn't play ME3 with it though.
Which is a shame (especially in legendary edition where snipers are amazing and assault rifles can hit more than 3 feet in front of you) since they get heavy armour which is the best looking armour in my opinion
Just wanted to say thank you for this fantastic series. I'm playing for the first time and felt overwhelmed trying to pick a class. These well-made and in-depth videos helped me decide on soldier for my first playthrough for a more "canon" approach, then if I replay I'll try some of the other classes after I understand the mechanics better.
Great video for new and old players! My first playthrough Shepard was a solider i had forgot about all the details to this class.

Because of the stupid class weapon restrictions in me2 i always pick soldier
I hate that about ME2. Infiltrator is my fave class in the trilogy, but ME2 makes me choose between assault rifles and the Widow, and that sucks.
@@dianabarnett6886 That's not that hard of a choice. Assault rifles will give you the flexibility you need.
It's funny becuase I feel the other way, almost territorial as I like to play Soldier in the campaign and we have no tech or biotic powers so our claim to fame is guns. Other classes who have these powers now getting MY abilities is kinda lame.
My playthroughs have always been Sentinel. Trying out soldier this time, and it been... liberating, able to use all these guns and ammo types, while not being as soft as most of the other classes.
My first ever playthrough of Mass Effect was as a soldier and I loved it. Most recent playthrough on Insanity was as a Sentinel and loved all the combos I could pull off too 😁

Engineers: My tech savvy allows me to exploit my foes and turn synths to my side

@@N7Kate I’m a very experienced player and have extensive ME Trilogy combat knowledge. I’ve looked at most of the Mass Effect combat-relevant content people have made.
Of course there’s much more that could be said regarding the classes and how to play them effectively. But I just wanted to agree with everyone here and say you’re absolutely nailing these class intros. Detailed, polished, and well-presented work. I wish I’d had these guides when I was just starting out.

The way to use this class
This class is pure combat. It has powers but most of them are geared towards improving weapons with the only significant powers requiring cooldown being Adrenaline burst and Concussive shot. As such when upgrading skills, a good idea would be to ignore any upgrades involving power damage and power recharge and focus on skills that improve weapons and armor.
As for powers, incendiary ammo for armor and organics and Disruptor ammo for shields and synthetics are a must. I've personally never found a situation requiring cryo ammo but u can upgrade that if u wish. Adrenaline burst is your primary power. It is effected by power recharge so use it when ever it is available

A word to the wise: "melée" is a loan word from French and is pronounced like "meh-lay" -- with only slight stress on the first syllable. In French, unlike Spanish etc, the accent marks do not indicate stress, but rather the quality of the vowel.

Yes, the introduction of Ammo types and adrenaline rush in 2 and 3, really made soldier class a good all round. And having so many options with all the weapons was so useful!

I always played Soldier, but part of me wants to name my Shepard in the remake Niftu Cal, but if I do that then I'll have to be an Adept

Personally Infiltrator has always my favorite so my first legendary run will be with that. Soldier has never too hot for me but since I like the gun play I do prefer them over Adept and Sentinel.

ME1 Soldier is the best because they have the best passives.
ME2 Soldier is the best because you need the extra ammo.
ME3 Soldier is an absolute juggernaut once you buy a Black Widow. Spam adrenaline rush so you never miss and concussive shot while reloading. Stab anything that gets close.
Tried something I never expected with this class. Went with a high rate of fire rifle (Geth Plasma, Phaeton or Revenant) and one or no second weapon, and added the Marksman bonus skill. Recharge speed got as high as 200%, and rate of fire w/Marksman made Adrenaline Rush all but irrelevant. Only time that came in handy was when I was armed with a sniper rifle, or during the Shore Leave mission to line up headshots with the suppressor pistol.
So how many guns do you need?
Soldier: Yes.

Did my first run through of the trilogy as a Vanguard and while I enjoyed it, shotguns have never really been my preference. So for my next run I've picked Soldier and think imma focus on Assault Rifles and pistols. Just fits Shep in my head.

I absolutely love mass effect but never played any of the dlc!!! I recently re-listened to the first 3 me audiobooks and I'm so hyped for legendary edition. I always wanted a current gen release and this is my most anticipated game /s this year. I cannot wait

Found this video by chance while scrolling down. Played other classes but still prefer the soldier and went through first insanity clear as soldier in the whole trilogy.
Had insane full arsenal souped up with hi-ex ammo and frictionless material upgrades in ME1, which just blazed through everything with little effort.
For 2 and 3, just broke through everything using adrenaline rush with either AR or sniper and things got even better after getting warp ammo for bonus power.
Soldier was the first class I played too and I still love it. Thanks for watching 👍
Soldier in ME3 can do tech combos better than any class - just use minimal weight load (to have 200% cooldown bonus), upgrade concussive shot to amplify at rank 6 and spam it with correct ammo type for the occasion. That creates overload/tech burst, incinerate/fire explosion, cryo burst/cryo explosions with 1-2 seconds cooldown - you can kill brutes on insanity in 5 seconds with 3 concussive shots.
Can you help me understand how to start doing this? It's going to be my first time ever playing ME3
@@silentneo1431 The final upgrade of concussive shot "amplify" allows c.shot to have properties of equipped ammo power. So first c.shot with fire ammo primes target, second c.shot creates fire combo and again primes target, ... The only downside to engineer combos is that c.shot have small or no aoe and sometimes the tracking fails (engineer's overload is instant).

Ive only played as a solider. I like useing in ME1 Ashley and garrus, ME2 garrus and thane, and ME3 Ashley, garrus, and james as my squadmates.

@@5eBz_ I played it kinda like that justifying it as shep was just a grunt during me1 but exposure to the beacon caused him to awaken his biotic abilities hence when he was rebuild he had biotic amps installed after that he started stocking up on tech to keep himself and the squad up and so he became a vanguard as of me3. And that is how you over explain people!

heads up, the immunity skill is being changed for legedary endition, it will be a permanent buff, but it will do less protection.
I hope they changed it for mobs as well. Humanoid enemies spamming Immunity made the higher difficulties in ME1 almost unplayable without Wrex and Liara to Warp them.
I came across your channel earlier tonight and absolutely love your videos on this series that's one of my favorites as well. My canon Shepard is a Male Soldier though I do enjoy playing as an Inliftrator FemShep very much as well and after all this time still haven't tried out any of the other classes unless the combinations I threw together in Andromeda count. As you mentioned here, the down side to playing Soldier class is the fact that you don't have access to tech or biotic powers (save for one bonus power!) and although your squadmates fill that void, the several times you go it alone without them can make things much harder on a Soldier Shepard despite all that firepower because you have to rely solely on Ammo powers to take down shields and armor. Plus I've always been really big on sniping in games so both Soldier and Infiltrator are perfect for my play style. Though I'm really thinking about trying out the Engineer class sometime, Tali's Combat Drone was invaluable for getting the "One and Only" trophy in ME3 just yesterday!

I always play as Soldier in playthroughs of ME1, 2 and 3.
Except when I needed to go another class for achievements like the ones in ME1 where you have to use certain abilities 75 times or whatever.
In the Legendary Edition I may just go for another class instead of Soldier so I can work on them straight away. I have played the series through so many times so maybe it's time for a change from Soldier all the time.
sentinels are the most broken in 2, and vanguards are broken in 3, in 1 you need higher tech level to open boxes, so one of the three tech classes
Yeah, if your not a tech class yourself in ME1 then you will need to bring Tali along to open wall safes and boxes for the decryption
Soldier is pure cheese in ME1 if you spec right. You can loop Immunity infinitely and be practically invincible because it’s cooldown ends a half-second before the first one’s duration is over.

I’m playing soldier because of the fact that yes I like all the powers but I like to give that job to my teammates with biotic and tech and I like dishing out commands and shooting
I did the same the first time I played Masd Effect, it just made sense for me, especially with being an N7. I felt Shepard would be a seasoned soldier and good with all weapon types

My favorite class is infiltrator, especially once the Lazarus Project added in the ability to cloak. Vanguard after Lazarus Project gets the ability to space boost.

Ive always been adept, but with legendary being out now, i finally have the chance to play one and two for the first time. I picked soldier in one, kept soldier in 2, and shit i think im going to stay soldier in 3 😂

Soldier FemShep is video game gold. The class fits Shep's story. The gameplay fits Shep's personality. One of the best voiced character in video game history.
As a guy Who sees himself in every character he plays I could never play as a woman cause I am not a woman. For me male soldier shep is just right

Who is the 3rd DLC companion in ME2? Kasumi and Zaed are in ME2 and Javik was ridiculously made DLC in ME3 when he is foundational to the entire trilogy (thanks, EA). Fortunately, the Legendary Edition will include all DLC.

Really good guide 🙂 watched all of the class guides that you made and subscribed. I kinda like/curious about all of the classes. What would be your favourite class to play throughout the legendary edition with consideration of story/combat/dialogues? Btw I only played the first Mass Effect 😊

at 2:30 you mean "use all weapons effectively" as a vanguard on my first play through to get by benezia i had to swap tactics from using cover and carnage to running out of cover with assault rifle no accuracy but enough ammo to rip through her shields before that tactic I was in a loop of death because I had (just like liaras recruitment) rushed in without proper equipment (for that mission I needed to replay from a citadel save and get the revival power so that I could bring people back when that quadruped mech blew them up) and the loop of death involved me going vanguard into combat, killing my squad (optional), then hiding and and spamming instant power recharge with carnage
the thing about non-usable weapons is not that they are not usable, it is that You can't use them effectively but this can come as a plus because when you are a first playthrough vanguard, engie, biotic, infiltrator, or Sentinel, (none of which can use ARs effectively) this will enable you to get a load of shots off easily but it is not as effective as a soldier or a soldier with overkill
my suggestion go into fights prepared don't repeat my mistake and force yourself into using an untrained weapon (this is sorta remedied because in later games you literally don't have access to all weapons at the same time thus you go into fight unprepared and you have to load a day old save sorry for the rant also I tried to grammar check it but I might have missed something so sorry again

Vanguard is fun, chaotic and in your face goodness. It is definitely not for everyone. Steering my brother (who will be a first timer) away from the class as he is not a shooter gamer, but an ARPG gamer. I feel he’ll be a better “lead from the back” tactical commander.
Which is why these videos will be a good overview for new and old players a like.
