- Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda just won the Palme d’Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival for Shoplifters, surprising audiences and critics alike. After all, Kore-eda’s films are more often known for their quietude than their festival hype. His movies are gentle meditations on life, known and respected for their humanity and their treatment of the subtle intricacies of close relationships. Of the many kinds of bonds he depicts, Kore-eda often focuses on fatherhood. What does it mean to be a father? How do a man’s experiences with his own father manifest themselves when he himself becomes a parent? Are fathers bound to repeat the patterns that came before them? Kore-eda is fascinated by questions such as these, and they’re important ones to consider. As we congratulate the director on his immense success, let’s take a closer look at the ways in which he frames fatherhood, and the subtle lessons we can learn.
If Kore-eda has you thinking about fatherhood, be sure to catch David Lowery’s short film, Pioneer, streaming on Fandor. Don’t know Hirokazu Kore-eda yet? Stream his debut narrative feature, Maborosi, also on Fandor, and for more great Japanese filmmakers, take a deep dive into Fandor’s catalogue of cinema from Japan. - Розваги
My favorite director. And my favorite film is like father like son
Shoplifters absolutely tore me apart! I'm glad I know about this director now.
such a great director. I almost watch all his movies (from maborosi to shoplifters) and learn a lot about family and relationships. his attitude is unique.
Great analysis. Koreeda's films are simply masterful
Cool video! Only saw Like Father, Like Son (great) and The Third Murder (okay) but this made me want to watch the whole filmography. Maborosi looks tight!
Happy birthday Kore-eda!
I only discovered him from this channel, so thanks for the video. I'm going to watch all the movies!

Someone doesn't get the symbolism here. Kids come from sperm in case you didn't know :)
This man only copy Yasujiro Ozu, Mikio Naruse and Hiroshi Shimizu very well . So he's nothing for me
I saw the exact same comment on other video...
