    Just a note on those Sozo's. The black line denotes the outer foil side of the cap which should ideally be placed toward the ground side of the circuit. Something I learned from Mr Carlsons Lab.
    Does make a difference to the noise floor and performance of the cap.

    I have an amp here in NZ that began life as a Ceriatone 18 watter. Then it was a JTM 45, and then a JTM 50. Now it is a JMP 1987 with the fancy pants bits like a Marstran OT and PT and mustard caps etc. I bought it as a platform for modding.
    I can see it is still shared cathode, but the only other thing I know about it is he said it is a '69 tone stack. He said he was going for Angus' Live At The Apollo tone (I think he actually used 2203s by then though) It sounds great for old school stuff, but does not really get into the more shreddy '80s tones that I am also into, no matter what kind of pedal I feed it. I want both from a single amp, but to not lose the good old school Plexi sound it currently has (with a treble booster and Gibson, it reminds me most of early MKII Deep Purple live tones).
    What I wonder if there a way to have multiple configs in one amp. The gnarliest Plexi, 2204, and Silver Jube configs (just the diode clipped lead channel). That way I'd have all my bases covered for the kind of tones I like. To do it so with every config sounding max legit is the thing though. I dunno if that's possible. What do you think?
    The old amp guy here in Auckland is ancient and semi retired now. I do not want to bother him with amp mods, so I have to find somebody else I can trust. I could do the split cathode myself, but beyond that I am out of my depth for now. Getting parts here in NZ is nigh on impossible too. Everything has to be imported. I end up just using Amplitube 5 instead of the amp, reactive load and IRs etc.
    I have to make up my mind what I want to do with the thing first. It changes every week, but Plexi thru to Jube seems about right for starters, maybe with some value refinements et cetera the modders know to get it all doing the thing right.
    P.S. I like the mods you did. Crispy, muting sounds tight, sings and rocks etc. All that stuff you need. It's morning here, so 'stuff' to describe 'things' will have to do.

    I really enjoy your videos. If I can make one suggestion though, please try to tap less on all the components with your wooden pointer. When you listen with headphones it can be hard to hear you with all that tapping. I’m sure that in person you don’t notice it but it really comes through the mic. Again, really like the videos keep up the good work.

    That 1985 does have reduced filtering. The vertical input models have 6 filter cans. Part way through 1984, Marshall switched to horizontal input, PCB-mounded pots, and reduced the filter cans from 6 to 5. Then, part-way through 1985, they reduced the filter cans again, from 5 to 3.

      @@lovecraftmusic8717 What I've read is that Marshall reduced them to cut manufacturing costs. There was also some other change in 1986 that affected the sound a bit, I think the compression at higher volumes. I have a 1985 with 5 filter cans, which I sold a great-sounding, 6-can, 1982 2203 to buy because, personally, I prefer the horizontal-input sound, and some of my favourite albums, the early Smashing Pumpkins stuff, were recorded with it.

      @@thischannel1071 well, if doesn't affect the sound too much it's ok for me...at the end of the day who can really play a 2203 at high volumes? 😂 Thanks BTW.

    Great work mate. How many beautiful guitars do you have??? I don't think I've seen you do a vid that hasn't had a different guitar featured in it! lol. Another great vid, thanks, I'm starting to see similarities in all these marshal circuits, which for me is a huge thing and a credit to your work. I love that you are now also using your own vids to return to and check voltages of past mods, very cool...Any chance of a low wattage 6v6s Plexi build vid at any stage? 😎

    My 1986 JCM 800 2203 horizontal inputs has three of those big blue filter caps. On your picture, the bottom two would be missing. Is there an advantage to having those two extra caps? Do people ever add the two that are missing?

  • @Mark70609
    @Mark70609 3 роки тому

    DeOxit is the stuff for cleaning pots. The 0.68uF across the 820 ohm doesn’t add a lot of gain.
    Are you increasing the 10K in the power supply to 22K to reduce treble in the amp and to reduce the headroom so it distorts sooner?
    Who originally came up with this mod?
    The person should get credit for their good work.

    • @HeadfirstAmps
      @HeadfirstAmps  3 роки тому +2

      Increasing that dropping resistor reduces the preamp voltages if course, but it sounds like you already know this.
      I call out that it's the Jake E. Lee mod, isn't it obvious what its based on?

I'd like to add a bite of mid to this amp, I use 6L6, and celestion V30. Would it be the case to put 4 El34 and use the greenback? Thanks.

    How do you discharge the caps? Can you show that step and do you test them after to be sure? And if you are changing caps, do you need to discharge? I remember on my vox they told me I could swap pots and some caps without discharging. I dont know if thats real or not so I didnt do it.
