    I love Rufai and Rotus debate a lot. Both have good points if you view from their respective angles. Very educative. I have learnt a thing or two even when I am not an economist

    Good discussion. It is very simple, Rotus is looking at it from a market impact perspective (i.e., payday for those who are plugged in to the financial matrix and aggressive capitalists) and that is his job.
    Rufai is looking at impact of flawed implementation from a people and society well being perspective, that is also his job.
    Ultimately each Nigerian will feel the impact of a flawed subsidy removal implementation (can any one remember the naira redesign implementation?) either you cash out or you lose out..
    For those struggling to grasp this intellectually - a policy in of itself could be good or bad, what matters more than anything is its implementation. Does the subsidy have to go? Newsflash it is already gone because Buhari left no budget for it, however there is enough subsidised fuel to keep us going for months.
    Therefore there is enough time to implement its formal removal without creating chaos and further unecessary hardship.

      Well said; but I think part of it is political posturing. Basically tell a faction of the nigerian elite that has been feed fat, there is no in the farm house.

    • @tkspiece2310
      @tkspiece2310 Рік тому

      @@olayinkabankole745 Oh agree totally. There is definitely posturing thrown into the mix, probably the main reason it was announced that way!.
      Though I suspect it's only the currently out-of-favour faction that will be blocked from further farm house proceeds, the currently in-favour faction will have a field day.

    What Rotus is saying should have been done BEFORE subsidy removal. What Rufai is saying is that the way it is being done will impoverish many ordinary Nigerians. How much is minimum wage? Even if you stop using your generator you will still use transportation and buy foodstuffs and all these will be hiked without any correspondent increase in wages. How will the poor survive? Add this to the floating currency which has caused a free fall in naira valuation and inflation in the markets is terrible. All in all, Rotus is talking from a rich person's point of view forgetting that the general populace is sliding into poverty on a daily basis. The middle class is almost non-existent at this point leaving a huge chasm between the rich and the poor and bolstering these kinds of viewpoints from the rich as they are even more out of touch with the people suffocating beneath the poverty line

    Seriously speaking maybe I’m the one that doesn’t understand how these thing works
    We consume avg 60mill litrs per day which is 60mil x 180 = 10.8trl
    With subsidy removal
    60mil x 630 = 37.8trl
    37.8trl minus 10.8trl = 27 trillion/ day from subsidy removal alone
    And yet we are still borrowing. 🤷‍♂️

    Importantly the poorest cannot cope based on their wages: this is what we who are in the private sector must address. More importantly: Nigerians do not trust their leaders past or current to ensure that even crumbs from this bigger pie will get to them. So they are the ones who tighten their belts but once there is an improved economy, the leaks take over again. The insatiable greed of the political elite must be curbed. It must be dealt with, it should not be allowed to continue to run riot. This is what will give the people confidence that these measures will make a difference
