    SwingRipper's "My Top PF2E Tools" (including one I made!): ua-cam.com/video/seHHTjsk0zE/v-deo.html
    ADDITIONS/ERRATA:
    - Over at the PF2 Subreddit people are leaving other helpful tips on how to use Archives of Nethys: www.reddit.com/r/Pathfinder2e/comments/1dngosz/i_made_a_video_guide_to_using_archives_of_nethys/
    -The commenters have explained the white dragon discrepancy. Basically, if there is a new version of something in the Remaster (even if it has a different name, like Purple Worm --> Cave Worm), then it IGNORES the old one if you have "Prefer Remaster content" on. Because there is no functional equivalent of the White Dragon in the Remaster, White Dragon still shows up.
    (If you want to get into the weeds of this, I wrongly thought AON would have the same policy as Pathfinder Society. PFS says that if something is republished WITH THE SAME NAME then we ignore the old one. AoN additionally is by default ignoring things that have been Remastered that have a CHANGED name.)

      I prefer the PFS over the Remastered Preferred update:
      · If the names are the same, I want the PFc¹ version with a reference to the legacy version.
      · If a new PFc¹ name replaces the P2 version, I want both available with a reference to each other.
      · If something only exists in P2, I want it available with the PFc¹ ruleset.

    Paizo had the good sense to support having the rules online for free. Players like me still prefer hardbound/softbound versions, so we support the company that way, but we can quickly reference things when needed on the website. Putting that info behind a paywall like D&D Beyond is a big "boo" from me

      I'm unemployed and gming for a group. I can't afford the books, but we can still play, and I know others in my group are buying Paizo products. It's inclusive instead of elitist.

      Honestly, while the archives rules are free for all, the books provide an easier to read format and context as to how and why things are the way things are.
      Still, they are definitely a wonderful resource to have instead of flipping through a book when I want to remember a spell effect.

    • @dmrandall
      @dmrandall 2 місяці тому

      Thanks for this! (I'm a big, old-fashioned hardcover book lover myself. )This approach by Paizo, IMHO, is a trend we will see with other companies and even OTHER industries. Greed is not the best way to make money and never has been.

  • @JimCullen
    @JimCullen 3 місяці тому +77

    I think the difference with the white dragon is simply that there isn't a remaster version of it. The setting is "prefer remaster content", not "exclusively show remaster content". So purple worm leads to cave worm because that's the remastered version of it, but when there _isn't_ a remaster version, it just shows the old version as normal.

    • @Cerif55
      @Cerif55 3 місяці тому +7

      Yeah, I think that's correct. Just like spells, some creatures have a re-name or light change with the remaster...purple worm to cave worm. Others like the White Dragon have much more extensive changes so, they don't have a one-to-one analog in the remaster.

    • @TheRulesLawyerRPG
      @TheRulesLawyerRPG  3 місяці тому +18

      Ah, so that _kind of_ comports with Pathfinder Society (which says that if there is a new version with the same name, that supersedes the old one). Here, if if there is a new version (even if it's a different name), then it ignores the old one if you have "Prefer Remaster content" on.

    • @Capt.Thunder
      @Capt.Thunder 3 місяці тому +1

      It's also because they renamed anything tied to DND branding. Purple worm is associated with DND.

    In case anyone is wondering why you might still ever shell out money for a Paizo book, I will say that
    a) The books present the information in an easier to read format, often classifying stuff by categories like classes, lore, backgrounds and geographical relevance (i.e. items that come from or are common in regions like Nex)
    b) The archives don't cover the lore and history of the rules, so you might be missing out on the cultural context of certain races and classes at times, which can be important for roleplay
    c) Paizo put in an amazing amount of effort into their world building and game design, so I still recommend supporting their efforts when you can
    My preferred method is to think of sourcebook as good reads, then using the Archives to supplement and remind myself or show my friends the crazy stuff Pathfinder has

      I mean I truly cannot think of a better reason to buy the actual books than finding out that Russian mystic and disowned son of Baba Yaga Grigori Rasputin helped seal away his mother in some old 1e AP. That one throwaway sidebar singlehandedly justified my purchase of LO: Legends. Pathfinder has really engaging and at times absolutely ludicrous lore that simply needs to be experienced... Well, _second-hand_ I suppose, to be appreciated.

      @@LightningRaven42I don’t frequent Reddit often. May I ask why Nonat’s return was infamous? I realize he is a bit of an acquired taste but I would think his return would ultimately be seen as a positive thing for the PF2 community. That’s especially so given the criminally small online presence of PF2 here on this site. Outside of the usual contingent of folks that find him a bit exhausting, I can’t think of a reason his return would warrant any level of controversy.

    • @LightningRaven42
      @LightningRaven42 3 місяці тому +4

      @@Captainpigraven Most folks don't like his content, specially his "deep dives", that are just basically reacting to Paizo content.
      Then, there was a whole issue with one of his kickstarter campaigns that I didn't bother to delve deeper, but it seems like most of the negativity was centered around the lack of response and delivery involving that.
      One post sparked the controversy by talking about Nonat's return and talking down to other PF2e content creators because they didn't have as much production values as the usual DND5e people, which was met with understandable criticism by the fanbase (including mine).
      From then on, there were several posts talking about the state of PF2e's online content creators, even with one specific redditor claiming the RulesLawyer's was "dry", and things went from there.
      As a substance over style kinda guy, I quite like Ronald's videos and I think most of the PF2e crowd enjoy them because they focus on what everyone likes about PF2e.
      Meanwhile, online DND5e content is just spectacle, fixing issues the game shouldn't have had in the first place, homebrewing rules that should've been written by WOTC, tips to improve things that DnD5e should accomplish but don't, and the occasional optimized builds that exploit the poorly written rules and systems of the game.

    One minor gripe I have with AoN is that sometimes additional, continuative links are missing. It's probably more a case of me being blind and not able to use it fully though, I'm not sure. I'm not fully sure where it was, it could have been the whole stealth/observation/initiative block, or maybe proficiencies. For example looking for something, and the descriptions refering to another pagem like "(on page xxx)", but I don't see a way how to get to that information, or what exactly I should search for to get to the correct block of information. Other than that fairly minor issue, AoN is awesome.

    One thing I've noticed about the one-click templates (elite/weak/proficiency without level) is that it seems to apply the changes to flat checks as well. At least it does on the Lich stat block, it's the only creature I checked because I can't think of any others that do a flat check off the top of my head. I guess technically this is RAW, and you as the end user can surely recognize the issue and disregard the altered math, but I still found it kinda funny and pretty important to make note of.

    Something to note that is easy to observe and very understandable, but nonetheless might not be intuitive for a new user given that it is the official PRD, is that AON is rarely 100% up-to-date. Currently, the full contents of one rulebook and at least one Adventure Path are missing, potentially more, and even more books are likely to get released before these are added to the website. These books were already out at the time of the latest site update if I'm not mistaken, so it might not even be up to date at the time an update comes out. This is not remotely a condemnation of Archives of Nethys, clearly the team works very hard to make the site this informative, intuitive, and useful. It's simply a fact that they're only human (and probably a relatively small team at that) and do need time to convert all the fun wacky additions of any given book to the easy to digest format of the site.

    • @Captainpigraven
      @Captainpigraven 3 місяці тому

      Pre-OGL remaster/Remaster fallout things were much better. I think at one point new releases were going up two weeks after official release as to offer a window of exclusivity for Paizo’s retail partners. The Remaster was such a huge change, and required an extensive update & integration to the AON format itself, they simply fell behind. Part of this was on Paizo, IMO. The second the final version of the PC1 and subsequent books were sent to print, they should have been forwarded to AON. I realize they did get them a bit early, but not as quickly as they should have been received for such an extensive project. Also, while Paizo might just be an official partner, they could have put more effort into supplying necessary resources so that initial wait wasn’t 3+ months. As you stated, AON is a small outfit, and they just recently brought on another team member to help. But people need paid for their time, and regardless of whatever money AON already receives from Paizo, and the modest donations some people give, it’s clear they aren’t rolling in green dough.

      @@Captainpigraven I got into the game right when the remaster was in full swing (ex-5e player getting into PF2e because of the OGL debacle? Unheard of) so I've never seen the Archives operating at such an efficiency. I didn't (and still don't) know much at all about the back-end of AON but even then I figured there had to have been more Paizo could've done to make the remaster period smoother that they simply... Didn't. I'm hopeful that once things settle down more the old pace might come back. Then again Starfinder 2e is happening vaguely soon-ish so...

    Thanks as always Ron! I just visited SwingRipper's YT from your link below. Again, thanks. I wanted to take just a sec to let you know, Ron, why I prefer your content the way you present it and what I hope to see more of. I like your presentations because without going into the lengthy details of instruction, you are a trained/practicing lawyer and teacher simultaneously, a great combo if ever. Doesn't matter what age of students or topics here for my purposes. My background is IT/networking/corp. sales/consulting/software instructor. I've been told a "very effective" instructor by those clients. I do this by and hope to see more of: Start by showing The Result. Following with the detail step-by-step how to get there, THAT exact result with minor, minor discussion on varying possibilities as those discussions are not the goal. Those minor discussions should be there for later discussion/videos. The step-by-steps HAVE to include every minor detail down to system settings if need be. Many vids could be cut down to: Begin with one everyday example of usage then a 25% how-to, then 75% working examples, not the reversal which tends to Wow the crowd first and too much. We know why this detail is important where a casual viewer won't realize why until they are too pissed off to continue. I can actually feel/detect/know when I presenter has just skipped over an important minor detail that most viewers might not notice. And, I'm definitely not a pro but I can feel/detect this even on subjects I'm not completely familiar with. I'm sure many enthusiasts are like me. It's that gap in the flow of discussion/instruction that leaves the mind in question and unable to move on. Our Presenters are not selling a product. They are/should be sharing/selling knowledge and need to do that more effectively. I Subscribe to you, Ron, as well as a few other "Big Dogs of PF2E" as I call you. Yet with some of the most viewed channels I have to "seek" forward and backward to find the "go from Step G to Step H …" due to the presenter heading down neat possibilities/avenues that again do not get a person to Step H. As a DM I can entertain those possibilities later. Right now we need to build a Adventure that does "THIS". I've begun to understand the goals/needs of a content creator and what I'm suggesting results in faster transmission of working knowledge (= more Viewers and more happy Viewers). Your approach really summarizes my intention here. And, I like your Style! Because PF2E is more complex than other systems should not be an issue regarding instruction, just more in depth. That said, being a Presenter (or DM even?) is not easy but the methodology is. I so hope our education system would get back to the basics.
    PF2E is more in depth than other systems and requires us to acknowledge that. That's why we like it. Trust me and others on that. I only wish I had time to read everything on your Discord. Ciao for Now my Fellow Gamer (Big Dog!)!

    My group switched to 2E Pathfinder from 1E and D&D 5E, and were using the Archives of Nethys for a while now, but this video was so helpful to make better use of the functions of the website. Thanks for the great work!

    Thank you so much for the 'dry' videos (please don't make me call it 'content'). They're great, and I really do think it works for you 👍
    Does anyone know why not all the lists and tables have the same search and filter options? It seems not all of them have it (or is there a way to bring them up?)
    I also remember trying to look through AoN for what items fit the 'worn boots' slot, and not being able to figure out how to filter that, but perhaps that has been implemented since. I hope so - it'd be really great!
    All in all, though, AoN is an incredible resource, and I am soooo glad my table is playing a system with this kind of free database to look through 😁

    Why does the Archives of Nethys creator need patreon money? Isn't Paizo paying him? Seems a little grifty to say they NEED money from the community.

    I Prefer to toggle off "Use Modern menu" in the theme setting, I just prefer that type of menu and i love that its an option hope it never is removed.
    overall i think the page looks better with that type of menu, and its faster to jump between different category's without having to hover/click to expand the different category's

    I love the Archives of Nethys website far better than the other popular website for PF because AoN gives the full information. The other popular website sometimes leaves out info like an items weight or renames stuff so it is then generic instead and that sometimes leaves out information like a ranger arch type being from a very specific nation at war with another arch type from another region, or a tradition that is a custom in one particular culture.

    Purple worm/cave worm are pretty much the same thing, so it shows remaster. But in the remaster, chromatic dragons were replaced with better dragons; they are different enough that there is no direct remaster version of the white dragon, so it still shows in the search bar.

    Can you clear a confusion on two actions spell that I have? Horizon Thunder Sphere as example, the language on the two actions section is causing me some doubt. While my friends are using it like this:
    • First round, spell as three actions, so 60 feet 3d6 electricity damage, half damage on fail, critical hit has dazzled for 1 round.
    • Second round, spell differences on two actions, so explodes on 2d6 electricity 10-foot emanation with basic dex save and the effect on you.
    But when I read "you can avoid finishing the spell" I understand that you will not cast it on the first round, and would actually only cast it on the next round, like this:
    • First round, prepare to cast the spell.
    • Second round, roll the attack, 60 feet 3d6 electricity damage, half damage on fail, critical hit has dazzled for 1 round, then immediately explodes on 2d6 electricity 10-foot emanation with basic dex save and the effect on you.
    That would allow enemies to see you charging up allowing them to stop you, and finally using the concentration flat checks that in many years playing I've never used. Am I reading this right? Or is my friends understanding the correct one?

      What you've written seems to be correct. The line "If you spend 3 actions Casting the Spell," seems to imply that the 3 action effects still apply on the full 6 action casting

      As the website is maintained by the community there is typically a delay before content from new books is added, that's it's only downside 😢 wait a few weeks and it shall appear.
