Your reaction was very respectful, thank you for that. There’s a lot of respect in rugby, you play hard might even fight. But at the end of the game you shake hands and clap each other off. Everything is left on the pitch. It’s a brotherhood/sisterhood. Best female player Portia Woodman. Oh and the most important reason why I love Rugby I played from 10 year old to mid 30’s and as a black man not once was there ever a hint of racism. I Evan have friends that I played against.

Your comment reminded me of my school rugby days. At about age 12, I was one of three Black players in a team that never had black players before (we were the first to even attend the school). In a home game against the famous Eton College, one of their players was heard to exclaim: "Ooh look, one blackie, two blackies, three blackies!" I didn't even hear it and it's arguable whether it was malicious (in 1969 Eton circles) but it incensed a couple of my White teammates, who reduced the game to an outright brawl won by a single score. I heard from one of the two guys, now a Falklands War veteran living in Canada, for the first time in 40 years recently on social media and had to mention how important that moment in time was to this fish out of water.

Number 11 is the wing the fastest man on the field, Jonah was special and the first of a new breed of rugby player, he was one of the biggest fastest players ever , It was not normal for wings to be so big , generally the biggest men are the forwards who fight for the ball ,and make the hard yards up the field , numbered 1 to 8. the backs are generally smaller and faster, number 9 to 15, the wings which there are two of on team side , one on the left side of the field and one one the right , there numbers are 11 and 14 , and the fastest men on the field .Jonah was bigger than the forwards and faster than most wings ,I had the pleasure of meeting and chatting with this great man on a couple of games he attended in Llanelli rfc(the scarlets). Great man RIP Jonah 🇳🇿

Allure Vision Awesome reaction, i agree with alot of the other comments, you will learn Rugby Union in no time. Just a note, there are two different sports Rugby Union and Rugby League, alot of people get them mixed up (would be good to learn the rules of both, so you know what differences to look for (they are very very similar sports)). Jonah Lomu is linked to the island nation of Tonga, but was born in New Zealand and played Rugby Union (All Blacks (New Zealand national team)1994 - 2003) for the most part of his career, was linked to a potential Dallas Cowboys contract but turned it down, as rugby and the All Blacks was his passion in life. The kidney failure issue, however was a huge problem in the Pacific Island community of New Zealand (mainly diabetes) and sadly Jonah had a kidney disorder called (Nephrotic Syndrome). This condition plagued him for most of his career, as he was diagnosed in 1995, but steadily became too much in the end and had to go on kidney dialysis, he also never told anyone (Didn't want sympathy or special treatment, kind of stubborn). As you see in the many montages, he still performed at the highest level, imagine what a fully fit Jonah would have been like, off the field he was a really humble, down to earth, one of the really good guys. He made a brief comeback to rugby (2005 - 2007) after a successful kidney transplant, but sadly that kidney failed later on and he went back on the kidney dialysis machine, which spelled the end of his rugby career. He died much later on of complications due to the long term kidney dialysis machine process, which is not a 100% efficient way to clean the blood, eventually leading to the main cause of Jonah's death, a blood clot causing a heart attack (which is common for most long term kidney patients). Jonah was a one of a kind rugby player (never to be seen again) the G.O.A.T of rugby. Here's why, he did the 100 meters in 10:88, could step (Duke) off both feet, had incredible balance for a big man, very strong, has great passing and handling skills (You can pass the ball in rugby) 6.4 tall, 264.5 lbs, considered the first elite athlete/super star in rugby and was said to have put rugby in the international sport spotlight. True All Black legend, all round good guy and had an awesome sense of humor as well. Very much missed, RIP Jonah.
Just a suggestion, you should look at, as this is not a montage, it's 3 minutes of the real game:

Cheers, hope this wasn't too long :)

After his first game against Italy, they nick-named him, "Il Collosso", because of his sheer size and power. Arguably one of the largest and fastest human beings on the rugby field to date. He had incredible flexibility too for a big man, able to bend down and push players off, that is, if you could hold his legs anyway, as most opposition players said he was so powerful in the hips.

  • @glenbe4026

    a) For it to be considered a "tackle" the opposing player has to be still holding you. If you are nold held, oyu can get back up and keep going. Also, unlike in Gridiron, play does not stop when you are tackled.
    b) To score, the ball must be touched down onto the ground in the goal area. Your hand must be on the ball and in control of it for it to count. YOu can still be tackled in the goal area as long as the ball has not been touched down.
    c) the person with the ball is only person allowed to be tackled. Tackling anyone who does not have the ball is considered a major foul
    d) the ball can be carried forward by a player or kicked forward. It can only be passed to another player behind the player with the ball (I think gridiron calls them laterals)

A player with the ball can kick it forward into space and then it's a race to see if the attacking team can reach it before the defending team. Passes have to show at least a degree of going backwards.

Kiaora yes Jonah lomu is a legend of Polynesian decent Tongan to be exact now our haka is a war dance our ancestors use to perform this before they went into battle it was used to hype you and your war party up as well as to intimidate their enemy to take their mana away ,now mana means something similar to power, lifeforce, energy, status .The haka can also be used to celebrate a wedding, funeral, appreciation etc as a sign of respect. Most of our Polynesian culture's perform their own version of a haka but Maoris are more renowned for the Haka ,Hawaiian,Tahitian, cook islanders,Easter islanders, have a similar haka but very distinguished in their own right but we do share a similar whakapapa ,lineages history languages very similar and appearance.

Rugby is a different animal, it's played internationally and has a World Cup. Another thing about Rugby is that there are no timeouts in an 80min game, only a halftime. Every player plays offense and defense and no substitutions unless for injury. Enjoyed the UA-cam!

As an Englishman I loved him except when he played against England. When he burst onto the scene he was a monster, nobody else was that big and fast. Teams had no idea how to play against him. If he was in the game today, no doubt he would be effective but he wouldn't have the impact like he did 20 years ago as players are all getting bigger, stronger and faster. Wingers who were usually the smaller faster guys are now often over 6ft and weigh over 100kg (220lbs) with pace to burn. Rugby is a very different game nowadays.

    • @brutismaximus1
      @brutismaximus1 5 років тому +2

Gotta disagree. There still hasn't been a player even close to what Jonah was based on pure numbers. 123kg, 6'5 and could run the 100m in under 11 sec. Just the physics on these numbers in action would still likely smash most players today. He use to constantly steam roll forwards of his era who were all well over 100kg. His numbers + his Island DNA + his upbringing on the hard streets of South Auckland make him a once in a century player. American Football players past & present don't even have these numbers in terms of size & speed combined.

    • @FrowningIke

Kane said it right. Yes he changed the game and players have improved. There has not been a player close since. If he'd been a sprinter he'd hold the world record. If he had played in the NFL he would have been the best player of all time. He was the most supreme athlete ever and if he didn't have his disease he'd have been even better! That is what's amazing!

Gr8 reaction and I like how u actually took your time and researched and read up on him. Rugby is a great sport 2 watch and play. The ball is only out of play wen the ball goes in2 touch or over the demarcated line which borders the field of play and a lineout is taken. Play can also be halted when u pass the ball forward or knock it on wen receiving a pass. There are also various penalty infringements which u will soon learn about. Just some useless information... Jonah Lomu scored a try against every rugby nation in the world except south Africa 😁 and yes that's where I'm from. Pls react to Cheslin Kolbe. Thanx

    Chur
    I'll try answer some questions
    So in rugby...
-15 on the field from each team at a time
-You can only tackle the player with the ball.
-You can only pass the ball backwards
If you drop the ball forward, if you run out of bounds while holding the ball, if you obstruct the tackler from tackling the person with the ball, plus more, this will stop the play and a reset phase will commence via Scrum, Tap and Pass, or a lineout. In some conditions, a kicker may also have a shot a kicking it over and between the posts.
If the ball carrier is tackeled and held on the ground, he must then place and release the ball. The two teams will then need to work to obtain the ball. Sk play doesn't stop when you're tackeled

Rugby is a game of respect between players. It can be physical on the field, but its left on the field. My home club does a summer tournement and its hard hitting on the field but after the matchs, we come together as a brother/sisterhood and have beers, stroies and food together.
As for your question about setting the ball down, yes to get the try, you have to put the ball onto the ground. Where you put the ball down determines where the kick for the conversion point is from.

thanks for the reaction, loved it. Im sure it wont take long for you to learn the game, i just wanted to let you know about jonahs position on the field (winger) no11. jonah was a beast, one of the youngest player to ever get picked by the ALLBLACKS, he was big and fast, to be a winger you had to have speed and thats why Jonah was a dangerous player, he had the speed and size and he was very strong. R.I.P to the best winger to ever play the game.

He was undoubtedly the first superstar of this game. He made The All Blacks at 19yrs old in 1994. Most of the highlights you saw he would of still been in his early 20s. He suffered kidney problems in 1995 but carried on playing. 2002 he did not play for the All blacks By 2003 the disease got worse and he had to undergo surgery in 2004. He played rugby again in 2005 for smaller franchise teams but retired shortly after in 2007 as his health was a concern.

Jonah Lomu, 1975-2015: the only rugby player I've ever heard hairy, drunk male fans in English pubs, and beautiful American women on UA-cam, talk exactly the same way about: "Look at the size of his thighs!" "He's a bulldozer!" Etc.
That's why he will always be a true legend.

As for your question about when play stops, it’s only when the ball stops it’s forward movement or goes out of bounds. Unlike American football were play stops when your knee touches the ground, you can even pass while you’re down. Also, the clock is running most of the time. So the 80 minutes of game time is actually close to 80 minutes real time. I think there’s only 10 minutes for halftime. Otherwise it’s constant motion. Maybe that’s one of the appeals of rugby.

  • @1chish
    @1chish 5 років тому

American Football was taken from Rugby Football but the similarities end there. Rugby is a passing game, man on man tackles not 'hits'. No helmets body armour and the ball has to be passed backwards not forwards. Rugby has 'scrums' not 'scrimmage', line outs and the same 15 stay on the pitch all the time!
and yes to get a 'Try' not a 'touchdown' you put the ball on the ground. The 'conversion' kick is taken from a line back from where it was 'grounded.
Glad you love this game. Nothing else like it for power, speed, skill, hard tackles and then we all go to the pub together afterwards.

That was great, your last question about the ball being in play was the crucial one, at the tackle the ball is still in play with both teams scrapping for possession, so the fitness levels of these guys are through the roof, play only stopping for forward fumbles or forward passing, ball going out of bounds or scoring at the ends by putting the ball down

    Hi AV
Here's a comment I posted on another video about the same thing.
    Hi
I'm not sure if somebody mentioned this yet (lazy to read the comments), but the numbers on the their jerseys show their position in the team. 1 to 8 are the forwards (scrummage pack). 9 is the scrumhalf, sorta like the quarterback in football. He's the link between the forwards and the back line players. 10 to 14 are the runners, usually the fastest players on the team. They form a slightly diagonal line behind the forward pack and wait for the ball from the scrumhalf to run it. The whole team plays this way, i.e. always stay behind the ball-carrier, thus the ball-carrier always knows that there is somebody left and right to pass to (not pitch as you call it). And finally, 15 is the fullback, sorta like the safety in football.
About the rules...... you were curious about a few plays in this and a previous video......
Tackle ball situation - when a players is tackled to the ground and held in the tackle, he must release the ball, i.e. he can not longer handle the ball in anyway. That being said, during the tackle the player does have the opportunity to make a final play before the tackle is over. Thus players going down in the tackle passing the ball to their teammates, or a tackle in front of the goal line, where the player can, in one action, stretch and ground the ball over the line to score a try.
If a player is tackle, but not held, and can get to his feet in the momentum of the tackle, i.e. sliding or rolling back onto his feet, he may continue to play. But if the player is tackle and not held, but has been stopped from further actions, the tackled player must release the ball, get back onto his feet without the ball, then the player may pick up the ball and continue to play.
The 'chip and chase' - As you correctly assumed, in rugby, unlike football, you may not touch, tackle or obstruct a player without the ball. The 'chip and chase' is a good tactic to beat an opponent coming from the front to tackle you. the idea behind it is to chip it over the opponent's head. Not only can the opponent no longer tackle you, but also if you are coming at speed, that opponent needs now to turn around and try to chase you down, which in most cases is almost impossible. That's why you see so many tries coming from it.
Also, not only can the kicker grab the ball, but any player in your team, as long as they were next to or behind the kicker at the time of the kick.
You also call them lateral passes, well not exactly only lateral. The passes may only be made to players next to you or behind you so, sometimes the passes are lateral, but most times they are backward from the person passing. Forward passing is not allowed, only kicks, and I already explained the basic rules about that.
Hope this helps give you little more insight to the game.
Keep up the videos. They're great to watch.
    thanks

people maybe have explained this already after 6 months but I will try and explain a bit about Rugby. There are actually 2 codes of Rugby, Rugby League and Rugby Union, the codes vary in rules and how you play each. Seeing as what you are watching here is Rugby Union I will concentrate on the rules of that. In Union the aim of the game is to carry the ball over the try line (American Football equiviant to the Endzone). Unlike American Football where you only have to run the ball over, in Rugby you have to place the ball down. You score 5 points for scoring a try. It is semi important where you ground the ball over the tryline as you have a conversion kick when you score a try, like you do in American Football when you run over the endzone. Reason it is important is because you take the conversion level to where you grounded the ball, so if you ground it under the sticks, or posts, obviously you have an easier kick than if you grounded it near the sidelines as the angle and distance is harder. You get an additional 2 points for a conversion. There are 2 other ways of scoring which are penalty kicks (worth 2 points) and drop goals (worth 1 point), there are also penalty tries, which is when you have been fouled and prevented from scoring a obvious try, but they are very rare and score as a normal try. When a foul has been committed, depending on the infringement, you can have a scrum (where the 2 sets of forwards lock together and push each other as a player puts the ball in from the side and they have to kick the ball out of the back of the scrum to continue the game. If it is a penalty they have choice to kick for penalty (2 points if successful) or gain ground by kicking the ball upfield out of bounds on the sideline. The latter results in them having a lineout at the point where the ball crossed the line but the ball most not have touched the floor when it was kicked out otherwise the lineout is taken level with where the kick was taken. A lineout is when a player throws the ball in to 2 lines of players who compete for the ball by jumping in the air to catch it. You are only allowed to tackle the man/woman with the ball, there are a few rules on how you can tackle but basically those are for safety reasons as as you saw they don't have much protection. The ball must be passed backwards, although you can kick it forwards for you or your team to catch as long as all players of the team with the ball are behind the kicker when he kicks it. The one way of scoring I mentioned that I haven't explained are drop goals or drop kicks. These can happen at any point during the match and is when the player kicks the ball between the uprights (sticks) during live play. These normally happen towards the end of a match if the scores are level or close, and as I said before, you score 1 point. Each half lasts 40 minutes plus any added time if necessary. I think that should have confused you enough lol, but seriously once you start watching it and getting into it the rules and plays are not any more confusing as your American football rules which I only know partially :P

In rugby, touchdown means Touch Down. If you don't place it on the ground there is no score. You can only tackle the person holding the ball. To move the ball forwards you can either carry it or kick it. If you pass (throw) it to another player, that player must be behind you - you can't pass forwards. I think that is probably all you need for now.
