  • This is a video build of Special Hobby's Westland Whirlwind.
    The kit is typical of Special Hobby. It would be crass of me to say this isn't a Tamiya kit but a hard build this isn't. Detail is good, cockpit especially. Decals are excellent and one can build a "Whirlybomber" from the kit parts.
    Special Hobby must congratulated for even producing for what is a mostly forgotten British fighter.
    What does comes across from the build, is it was such a shame this large, elegant aircraft wasn't a success.
    To be honest, this video is slightly truncated as I'm still getting used to the process..
    It has been quite a while since my last upload, apologies for that.

    Absolutely brilliant build - well done. One point for anyone building a Whirlwind. By early 1941 RAF fighter command had gone over from using HF radios to VHF radios. The VHF radio on the Whirlwind didn't require the wire aerial from the aerial mast to the tail - the shorter wavelength meant the aerial mast itself was all that was needed. They would still have had the IFF wire aerials from the fuselage to the tailplane. There was one well-photographed Whirlwind that was kept at Boscombe Down (P6997) that seems to have kept its HF radio and the associated wire aerial. The first 18 production Whirlwinds (P6966 to P6983) were built with only provision for HF radios, having no forward aerial mast, the wire went to the back of the cockpit canopy instead. This Whirlwind P6985, being so early in the production run may well have briefly been fitted with the HF radio before having a VHF set fitted. But the majority of Whirlwinds didn't have a wire aerial.

      Part of the reason why I like build obscure stuff is to bring to people who don’t know about that subject. If I can get one person to be interested in Brit aviation, then I’m doing well 👍

    Nice work. Looking at the propellers, they appear to be designed to rotate in opposite directions (the port clockwise and starboard anti-clockwise, 'up between the engines'). This begs the question of are they attached to the correct engines. From what I have read, both the De Havilland Hornet and North American P82 'Twin Mustang' initially had propellers that rotated up between the engines. On the Hornet this caused rudder effectiveness problems at low sppeds, and the P82 couldn't even get airbourne on its maiden flight due the high levels of drag. Consequently, both had propellers that rotated down between the engines (as does the Airbus A400M, which (serendipitously) also causes the wings to generate more lift)

    • @TimsScaleModelling
      @TimsScaleModelling  Рік тому

      Yeah Andrew, Westland changed the prop rotation a couple of time during the development of the Whirlwind. Quite interesting really

    My favourite WW2 aircraft. Although not part of the canonical Battle of Britain aircraft, it flew in late 1940 when the battle was still very real so I kind of include it. Imagine these instead of hurricanes attacking the bombers while Spitfires provided top cover against the 109’s.

    • @TimsScaleModelling
      @TimsScaleModelling  7 місяців тому

      A real shame it was discarded just because the engines weren’t up to scratch. The kit has been re-released as a “Hi-Tech” boxing ie loads of extras. I might consider building again as a Whirlybomber

    Thanks for sharing. I have been building this kit as well. I really liked the cockpit, and it’s capacity to super detail it with various control cables. I’ve built the main airframe and it’s ready for paint. The undercarriage looks interesting, any tips?

      Patience, take it slow and steady. I did try to film it but it’s hard enough just building it. It’s is actually quite sturdy once it’s together
      It’s a nice cockpit init Cos, like you say, could be super detailed if you fancied it b

    I picked up the Revell 1/32 Temptest that was a one time Special Hobby kit. It is a nice kit in some ways, but a poor kit in other ways. A mixed bag of great detail, and really poor fitting parts. I'm about to toss the darn thing in the trash.

    • @TimsScaleModelling

    • @TimsScaleModelling
      @TimsScaleModelling  Рік тому +1

      Hi Nige.. all is generally good. But being a SH kit is isn’t perfect. Surface detail can be soft in areas and quite subtle, so be careful with your paint. Cockpit is busy but watch the fit. Undercarriage is by far the most difficult, complicated and vague fit but it does actually fit and is quite strong. Good luck mate, it builds up nice and is bigger than you think
