Wow. Been growing this garlic for 17 years off the same set of plants and never knew why I kept having more then I remember planting, always thought I was extra forgetful. After all this time I now know why. Thanks for posting this.
You're welcome, Joe! Glad you found this helpful! Misilla
Lol...
Thanks! I planted elephant garlic last fall from just the clove and I did get korms (corms) and I even noticed a few of the big bulbs. I didn't have any idea that the korms would grow in the onion-shaped bulb and then the next year into the the bigger garlic. Thanks, you made my day.
You're welcome, Bev! Glad you got some corms! Thanks for watching!
Thankyou
You’re welcome, Adam!
So glad I found this I was trying to figure out what they were and searching “garlic nuts” didn’t help 🤣🤣🤣
Hi Danielle, They kind of look like corn nuts! Lol 😂 Glad you found this helpful! Thanks for watching! Misilla
Thank you! God bless
You’re welcome! Blessings!🙏🏽
Super helpful. Thank you. I think I’m just going to grow up the corms to use to eat as a mild garlic/onion. Less mess and division will let the elephant garlic go to get more corms. Tysm
You’re welcome ☺️
Helpful? Beyond belief!!! I see from your comments that I'm not the only one that didn't know that. yay! lol. you are excellent at great visuals and explanations. Thank you so much!!!
And just look at your baby!! The look on her face shows she's determining just how much water is enough lol!👍👍just had to give your little one a thumbs up too :-)
Thank you so much my friend! Our little one loves being out in the garden especially when it's harvest time. She's been picking snow peas and blueberries, but they don't make it all in the basket because she's eats them right away, Hee hee! Have a great weekend! 😊
Lol why did I laugh when you first said corn & corrected it😂. I actually prefer the round single pearl garlic!!! I'm growing elephant garlic just for that now. Thanks for info!!
Great info. Thank you. Keep on growing. Peace ✌to you & yours.
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching!

I'm from India . Recently I've heard that those small garlics are very good for health. So I was searching how to grow and get them. You have revealed secret. So thank you again.

I grew rounds this year from cloves. Your video has been a huge help! I've harvested the rounds in early December. Can you please tell me how to store them to plant in fall?
Beautiful and informative.
Thank you very much! Glad you found this helpful! Have a great weekend!
I just planted a clove from giant elephant garlic. Let’s see what I’ll get out of it. Thanks for the video! :)

Amazing thanks for the tips
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
I just planted the separated elephant garlic cloves, as well as the corms.....had so much elephant garlic....late getting into the ground.,...very late, better late than never......
It's okay you can still harvest the round bulbs if they don't divide.
Thank you - this is exactly what I needed to know!
You are welcome, Terry. Have a great day and thanks for watching! Misilla

You're welcome Sophia! Thank you and I hope you have a great weekend!
You finally solved a mystery with the elephant garlic. I will set aside a bed just for the corms since it takes 2-3 years to mature. Do I need to worry about crop rotation?
Hi Susan, I don’t have issues with diseases on garlic , so I don’t rotate I just let them do their thing. If you have problems with disease, it’s a good idea to rotate. Thanks for watching and enjoy your weekend! Misilla
Thank you - Could find anything on these little babies -
You’re welcome, Paul. Glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching! Misilla
Where do you live? Have lots of success growing hardneck garlic in Pennsylvania. Would like to grow elephant garlic next. Where did you first buy elephant garlic or croms to start? Where would you recommend I look to buy croms or the elephant garlic to start planting for next year? Thanks.
Hi Heather, There are vendors on Etsy that sell corms and cloves. We get ours from out relative’s small farm. Happy holidays!
Going out there now to pick my elephant garlic.
They’re so delicious!

Is there any advantage to waiting 2-3 years for the corms to grow (rather than planting a clove which will be ready in 1 year)?
It's a great way to start a perennial patch of elephant garlic.
So I'm harvesting my garlic now, Should I be saving the corms until the shortest day and plant them then? Or replant them strait away?
Hi Donald, you can leave them in the ground. They should sprout in spring.
Thank you for the video. I was trying to figure out what these were called. Can you tell me the best way to save them? Leave them in the dirt? Any way to dry them out so they can come with me to a move next year since I won’t be around to pick them next summer? Thanks!
Hi they can be stored inside in a dry and well ventilated room. I put them in an open paper bag.
Thanks so much for making this video. This year was my first ever growing garlic and when I harvested it had those corms. I couldn't find anything about them on the internet because I didn't know what they were. Also my garlic didn't form any cloves even though I planted with seed cloves. They looked like onions. Any idea why that might be? I looked it up and couldn't find anything.
Hi there, you're welcome I'm glad you found this helpful. If they looked like onions they probably haven't divided into cloves yet. When did you plant them? When you harvest too early that could be the problem. I generally plant garlic in the fall and harvest in July . Depending on variety, it could take 6 to 9 months before harvest time . Hope this helps! Thank you for watching!
Learn To Grow I planted them in the beginning of December and harvested june 9th. All the leaves were yellowing basically all dry. It was too hot here. I live in northern california zone 9b. I see now that they just didn't have enough time since I planted too late. Thank you.
Try to plant a soft neck variety they do great in warm climates. You can take those garlic bulbs and plant them this fall and next season you should get big mature bulbs !
Learn To Grow thank you for the garlic variety tip. Also, I am planning on replanting the garlic again this year because of what you said in this video. 😀
Learn To Grow May I ask what zone are you in?
Does anyone know how deep the corms should be planted? Thanks and greetings from Dublin Ireland. 😊
Hi Sylvia, We plant garlic corms about an inch deep.
Thank you.
You’re welcome!
can you tell me what is difference between elephant garlic&pakistani NARC G1 garlic
When I harvest the bulbs, do I need to do anything specific with corms till I am ready to plant them?
Hi Steve, You can leave them in the ground if you have a designated area for them. They can take a year or two to sprout. You can also keep them in a dry cool place until you're ready to plant. Thanks for watching!
When do you plant the corms? No one seems to want to say that. Please help. Also if I have to store them hiw do I do that.
Hi you can plant them in the fall like garlic cloves. You can store them just like how you would with garlic bulbs. Any container that allows good airflow…baskets, boxes or paper bags left open in a cool, dry and dark place.
Please share how do you prepare the bed for E. Garlic. I tried and the garlic clove is small. Thanks
I'll plant them soon, stay tuned! Here is a video on planting garlic last year. ua-cam.com/video/ALWIIfL9lEE/v-deo.html
Do you know Which Lands Nations does Elephant Garlic Grow Originally?
Thank you for your Video it was very informative!
Hi from what I’ve read before it is
native to Asia, but some publications states it’s native to Africa and Europe as well.
You’re welcome and thank you for watching! ☺️
Baby is so so so precious 💖
What would happen if we just left the first years plant from the corms in the ground and it sat their during a mild winter.?
Thanks
Hi thank you! If you left the bulb that grew from the corm, they will come back and mature in the second season. 😊
how does the elephant garlic taste compare to regular store bought variety? Are they just a garlicky or more mild?
Hi they are slightly garlicky, but mild and not pungent. They are closely related to leeks. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the very informative video ! Can we cut a single bulb into 4 pieces and plant them to get 4 regular multi cloves garlic bulbs
You're welcome Muhammad. No, I would plant the whole bulb and let it divide on its own then you can separate the cloves later.,
@@LearnToGrow1 It's worth a try as i cut it into two and both have grown fine with multiple cloves ! Shall i cut it into four and plant them to get regular Elephant garlic bulbs? I think it would work. What's your take on it please?
Just like an onion! It would be fun to experiment ☺️
@@LearnToGrow1It would be fun indeed! I don't know technically it's viable or not as we may end up cutting its embryo. Can you advise me on that or consult some agrarian please!
After harvesting the single immature bulb in July, do you cure it til fall, then replant? If so, when replanting, do you cut the stem off first?
So I need to wait till the Fall to plant the Corms? And do I need to pull the plant up next Spring/Summer, and replant the following Fall for the full growth of the Giant Garlic Plant???
Hi James, Yes garlic is best planted in the fall. If bulbs or corms are left in the ground they will sprout in the spring as the weather warms.
@@LearnToGrow1 thanks
You’re welcome!
Do you get comms from the big elephant garlic ?
Hi yes ☺️
After the corn grows into the small head of garlic do you have to take it out of the ground for the summer and then replanted in the fall or can you leave it in the ground until the following year and still get the large multi cloved elephant garlic?
Hi Yes you can leave them in the ground and let them sprout back in the spring, if you like. Thanks for watching. Misilla
@@LearnToGrow1 thank you for the response! I recently purchased some corms off of eBay and wanted to get them in the ground before winter gets here. I was thinking by the time next Spring & Summer gets here they're not going to be a large enough of a head so I wanted to leave them in ground for the whole summer with the hopes they will be a nice big head of garlic by the end of Summer. Thanks again!
You’re welcome! If you plant them now, you can harvest the immature bulbs next summer or leave them in the ground and they’ll mature in the following summer 2022. 😊
@@LearnToGrow1) thanks! I was thinking they (large heads) would be ready by fall of '21. Would there be any benefit of me pulling them out in the spring of 2021 and then immediately replanting them for the summer of '21? Or any benefit of leaving them in as discussed above?
Hi In the first season the bulbs won’t divide into cloves and will look like onions, round. Yes you can leave them in the ground for the following season or harvest and eat them if you like. 😊
Hi
Can we grow elephant garlic corms without shell.....
Like as we know that the shell is hard so the corm experience difficulty in growing
But without the shell don't you think the corm will turn into a fully mature elephant garlic bulb?
Waiting for your response😁👍
Hi I leave the shells on so they don't rot.
When are you supposed to plant the corms? How did your bulb stayed so tight? I had to harvest mine's this week because the cloves were separating. Thanks!
Hi Andy, the corms can be planted in the fall like the cloves or left in the ground. Mine come back every year now since I leave some corms in the ground. If you wait too late to harvest they can start splitting. Have a great weekend and thanks for watching!
How long can I store the corms before I plant them?
Hi Brent, I’ve stored some for 9 to 12 months. As long as they are stored in a dry, cool and dark area with good ventilation. I also intentionally leave some in the ground. We have a perennial patch where they are left to return each year.
How do you store your 1st year bulb, from the corm, until it’s ready to plant in the fall?
Hi Roxanna, You can leave them in the ground and they will sprout or store in an a paper bag or cardboard box in a dark, dry and cool place, make sure they get good air flow, same way you store garlic bulbs. I store mine in a box in the basement. You can plant the corms this fall. Thanks for watching! Misilla
Just found this video because this is the first year I have corms. I read through all the comments/replies and I just want to make sure--so I plant the corms in the fall (October?) like regular garlic (about an in deep???) and if they make one "onion bulb" around July, I dig that up, store it as I would regular garlic, and then plant that in the fall (October) and by the 3rd season, it should be regular elephant garlic? Is all that correct? Thank you so much for this video and any answer you can help me with!
Hi! Yes you got it right! I will upload a video of my garlic harvest and will mention this. I dug some immature elephant garlic bulbs last week that were planted in October 2019 that I will be planting this October 2020 and will be harvested July 2021. Thanks for watching! Misilla
I appreciate this was posted in 2017 but that was exactly the information I was just looking for. Thank you very much.
You’re welcome Richard. Thanks for watching!

You’re welcome 😊
Elephant Garlic is not a garlic. And I know that is what they call it. And on Garlic those little clove like things would be called Bulbils.
And I know from having planted Japanese garlic and some others from Bubils that u Can get a 2 in divided Bulb of garlic in one season. Soil conditions have to be right and the right Bulbils have to be in the ground. But I had 5-6 different varieties of garlic planted from bulbils and over 80% grew to divided bulbs in one season in an area that I put a lot of work into. And my biggest bulb was the 2in Japanese bulb that I had and most of the rest were 1.5 in or smaller. And I did have some 3/4th inch rounds.
I live in South Central MN in the USA and have grow 2.5 in. softneck garlics and 2 inch creole garlics and 3.5 inch hardneck garlics. All on what for me is fall planting and having everything go through our winters which can get to -30f for a week and have up to three ft. of snow on it all winter.
If I recall correctly Elephant Garlic is a Leek rather than garlic.
Yes that’s correct, elephant garlic is more like leek and has a mild garlic flavor. From our experience growing elephant garlic from corms/bulblets in the last 8 years, it has taken two seasons to mature and divide into cloves. The first year it grows a round bulb, like an onion. You can eat them or plant them again in the fall to harvest the following season. I believe it’s different for conventional garlic, the ones that grow from bulblets do mature for us in one season. Thanks for sharing your experience with growing garlic, it is one of our favorite crops to grow. Have a good week and thanks for watching. Misilla
Thank you, just got a bowl of these from my first garlic harvest. 😋
That's great! You're welcome!
