Honestly facts, this was all I’ve heard about 24/7. Just get a regular part-time job, code as a hobby. I’ve never seen a person become good at something out of sheer determination for money; it sucks all the fun out of it. It’s like: you have to learn this that. Sometimes I think, if these people are smart, they would’ve already landed a job. They could just be outlier, the other side of the curve who lost out on a job 🤷♂️

I broke into tech about 7 years ago now coming out of manufacturing role. All along the way people told me XYZ is not enough and you will never make it. I never bothered to listen and in my opinion I made it.
CSS, HTML, and JavaScript is certainly enough to get a job as an entry level dev. Sure you need to learn a framework, but that’s pretty simple once you understand the fundamentals.
It's a great video; networking is key. I know there are a lot of haters out there trying to crush dreams.
My first job was for a marketing agency, making 25 bucks an hour with basic HTML, css, and JavaScript, making minor changes to WordPress themes.
I got that job through networking. It was someone I met in my Jiu-Jitsu class.
She overheard me talking to someone about how I was learning programming.
While talking to her, she told me they were building many WordPress sites.
They all already had a senior dev but needed someone to focus on making minor changes.
Lol. It was not something the senior dev wanted to focus his time on, and I am pretty sure the owner of the company was much more excited to pay me my 25 dollars per hour rather than paying 100 dollars to the senior dev to do the work below his level.
It was a win-win.

Start by learning the fundamentals of any coding language. Once you have learned the basics, you can dive into coding. Don't try to master any coding language when you are a beginner. Grow slowly but steadily.

Thank you for the kind words sir, many people (including me), get to the point when you learn already for 9months to 1 year and still can't find a job so it can be very overwhelming. My good tip is when you apply and they say 'No' to you ask them what is the reason and where can you get better so you have higher chances many companies will gladly tell you and you can continue from there. Never doubt or pitty yourself the time you spent learning is definetly not waste, what would be waste is let's say drinking alcohol instead of learning :D so be kind to yourself

A modern dev needs to understand how to use Github Copilot too. Yes, we're still Googling, but a dev not using Copilot has a disadvantage comparable to a dev 4-5 years ago not using Google. But just like knowing how to ask Google how to do something, you need to know how and what to ask Copilot to do.
In Sweden it doesn't matter how much skill you have, if you don't have 10 years of experience you are screwed...

One thing I am missing from you is that your journey of learning new stuff will never stop. Learning is the most important skill. You solve problems. As a web-dev its not your job to make a websites. Thats boring and actually can be realized within minutes by frameworks and I am not talking about AI. You have to understand and translate the business-logic into code. I guess you learned enough if you close your eyes forever - in the meantime get your work done whit what you have learned allready :)

To me when it comes to CSS the fact that it can get really in depth is to find a special skill set with it. Me I am wanting to get well versed in the animation aspect of it.

i agree with this video. Im learning to be a software developer, and i see the standards for web developer are very different.. from these employers expect a web developer to know a ridiculous amount of frameworks, especially front end, feels like one comes out every other year especially for JS. Not to even last 3 years without being "outdated" , but expected to know 10 frameworks at the same time 💀 . No one is going to know it all at once. And this could make people indecisive about the learning route they should take when they don't have a chance to adjust.
I self studied and doing HTML for like 22years just for fun. Build my own html website just inside the pc and put the links I need to get me somewhere I always use in a click instead of trying to type in address bar or opening the bookmark menu to go to the sites I always go. I’m happy and blessed with my work/job but recently made me realize to learn more on coding in office work bec I’m getting older and I cant be working physically demanding forever. Thanks for advice in CSS i thought I dont know enough of CSS that I shouldnt be progressing to try learn JavaScript

Kinda starting in Java a bit I already started learning SwiftUI language and build test app (not the Swift-Storyboard) but still lack functionality like two finger zoom in/out and cant make the “navigation” code work yet. So its really foreign language for me when I started it bec Im so used to html codes but I’m happy I’m progressing and my daughter saw the app I made with her face as a logo :)

As a side hustle, HTML, JS and CSS are sufficient skills to have, perhaps not as a full time career prospect. Every small business, hobbyist and crafter needs web presence to survive and if you can help them to achieve that, there's money to be made.

As it gets harder and harder to pay the bills, even small businesses and hobbyist are now looking for online presence. It's vital for business survival. I see a trend where a lot of people use social media platforms like FB and IG to get noticed. That's great, but I believe having a basic landing page on which to display and sell products and/ services is still very useful. That's where HTML, JS and CSS shine. Not everyone needs an app for that, nor AI integration which is all the rage. Ofcourse, for the no-coders, there are other options.

As an experienced Java Programmer that just started working with JS and Node, i feel like a kid in a candy store. Im not saying i could become a high level in these technologies over night, but im like picking these tools so quickly, especially when using these chatBot's like chatGPT nowadays and of course you can Google plenty of stuff. I always advice new developers, learn basics of OOP well, and programming in general, pick up a programmers mindset, dont worry to much about programming languages. They are esencially just tools, if you know what you need to build and how it should look, having a bigger picture in mind, you can pick up these things very quickly. A lot of far transfer of knowledge between different kinds of programming languages and programming tech in general. Basically, learn one language well, and you have them all in your backpack.

I recently got rejected because I didn’t have a full year of professional Python experience. Even though I had built 2 live full stack applications with Python backend (Flask) and a react frontend. The barrier to entry is crazy right now.

Sad to say I've quit web development for like a month now after studying hard for 3 years+. I just couldn't grasp javascript nor build anything of my own. I was stuck in tutorial hell. I was burned out not making any progress

Brah unless u absolutely hate it... I'd keep @ it after so much time invested! I'm currently copying UdeMy Project, and modifying them based on the information u learned... and trust me that works! The key is that u gotta modify it enough to make you think... which will make u go back to the project you're copying... and the feedback loop into retaining the info then starts - studying ain't enough to achieve that!

react makes life easy
Choose 10 simple projects like calculators, ToDo List, quiz app, weather, etc. then give each a project 2 weeks where you watch tutorials for 2 days while coding along then start recreating the same app everyday by yourself for that 2weeks. Do not skip a day. After 10 to 15 projects you will be good enough to even understand React JS.. try to do the advanced version of those apps on the second week and make sure your last 2 projects are difficult

Im a full time employed dev.. I have to say.. html/css .. practical use.. working with pages.. Thats actually surprising very very difficult and a hard skill. ok, you can learn the basics of html/css .. but practical application on a web page with responsive functionality and many different parts hidden at certain screen sizes... making a page look good to commercial standard with those tools.. Can take awhile to learn that.
I would hit all three at once and just keep banging away at it... that's how I learnt.. and never give up.
In the end you'll have to work with all kind of messy scenarios with html/css... and JS. Sometimes I have to use JS to actually manipulate content just so I can begin working with it.. web dev is a messy job.. working with all kinds of different setups and all kind of limited access to things. Takes a long time to get proficiency with it all.. for sure. Its an interesting and worthwhile job though..
The real learning begins when you get a job and get thrown in the deep end with tickets and clients asking why its taking so long. Hopefully you end up in a firm with good senior colleagues who will help you out.
Thats what Im shooting for! Also @medias get crazy when your thinking of every single screen a user could use
@@thetechdad87 there's a trick to the mQueries.. if done right you wont need many of them. Frameworks like bootstrap can help. If you look at the standard break points on bootstrap website then that is all the media queries you should ever need.. in theory... even if using pure css
These are not times when you could find job with HTML, CSS and JS. These times even learning framework (like React or even Next.js), learning TypeScript, learning Node, learning Mongo, Postgres, deploying your apps using Docker and PM2 on Ubuntu VPS server isn't enough. I mean I don't know what is actually, probably just doing freelance for a couple of years waiting for better times and be able to then flex with 5-10 years of exp, which might be enough to get the intern position, or even junior if you're lucky or have like 20 yrs of exp.

I disagree with 'you WONT get a job today' I think it will be very difficult. But, your following sentence said it all NETWORKING. This is the key and even with some basic knowledge making the right impression CAN get you a job. This won't be the story for everyone but it is possible with the right mindset.

@@thetechdad87here in the Philippines html CSS and JavaScript will not give you a job by just having the skill of these three, even startup or corporate company will not hire by learning the fundamentals as these days is because of modern frontend tech evolution come out in the market and hyped. So some of the highschool or college here are use to study modern way of building frontend

Let me start with: yes, you're right, the most critical skill is networking. You need to know people and you need the skills to back up what you say you can do.
The truth is, when it comes to HTML/CSS, a basic understanding is more than enough because of the existence of css libraries. 90% of your styling (assuming you're not using a framwork that just basically takes care of your style for you), is just super basic aligning elements in some way, adding some colors, and making it responsive enough. This usually takes a few months of practice.
Unless you really need to, you won't go deep into css and HTML, you won't spend days making photo-realistic images using just css. There's not really a need to.

As a full stack dev for a large corporation, I'd rank them like this:
HTML - just need the basics these days
Javascript - intermediate to expert knowledge is helpful; fundamental knowledge of strings/arrays/dates/etc and the different methods used to manipulate them is critical
CSS - expert to master is most helpful; everything uses styling to some degree and you want your apps to stand out
Google will be your best friend.
Very true I prefer to let tailwind or bootstrap handle most my styling. It can get so complicated lol

1. Enough is enough when you can produce quality stuff in a decent amount of time.
2. Don't try to memorize everything. You can't. Of course there will be stuff you can memorize through practice and muscle memory, but most of the time you'll need to google stuff or have an API reference near you for specific or situational stuff. If you count "enough" by memorization, you will fail.

I know enough to do some really fun things buts without a degree their isn't much opportunity to use those languages to get a job. So i started learning frontend about 2 years ago took a lot time off learning. I still have a grasp of HTML and css, js is a bit tricky but I'm getting an understanding of it. Do i need to go learn React or Angular too?

Add a little PHP, WordPress and its new block framework, and you'll never be out of work. Of course that means deciding to freelance in the small/medium business space, which is a much different path than trying to compete for something like a 6 figure Google job.

Is this 'enough' level including when you use AI to solve projects?
I have been practicing my coding for a lot in the last two years, but I've used AI a lot to help me find different methods and work through problems. Made a lot of small projects, and a few bigger web apps. I have a good understanding of the fundamentals now, but honestly I wouldn't be able to make a big application alone now without a very long time.
This varies on what your goal is. AI tools will be essential moving forward but we need to have a really good understanding of what were doing and not fall into letting AI do it all. Otherwise what's the point in even given you a job. On the other hand if your building an app to sell or for your business use everything you can to reach that goal no point in tying one hand behind your back.

I work daily with Vanilla JS in the technical marketing industry (with Tag Management Tools like Google Tag Manager & Tealium & Optimizely). I definitely have strong baseline knowledge/fundamentals of JavaScript/TypeScript, but how do you know that you know enough?
Do you need to be able to make large applications without any help? My goal is to be at a Senior Software Engineer level, and I'm assuming that once someone reaches that level, they have such a deep understanding that inevitably they'll defer lower level tasks to an AI to handle

How do you know that you have a 'really good understanding of what we're doing'?
That's the main thing I'm trying to figure out right now (if I'm holding myself back learning wise by using AI although I understand most/all of what's happening, I basically abstract myself away to thinking a level higher about solvable sub-problems that need to be solved in a project).
For example, if I need a regex that matches all subdomains on a site, rather than hack away at the regex myself, I look at Stackoverflow, or open ChatGPT to make that regex for me (I know how to test/verify it's results) but that's one example

There's no "finish line". The point of this is for a guideline for when you can start applying. This suggestion can be applied to react as well.
My biggest regret as a self-taught developer is focusing on vanilla Javascript for way too long. I somehow got fortunate enough to get a job without learning a JS framework and I still don't know one up to this day because I still think that I need to be a "master" of vanilla JS rather than taking action.
If I could do it all over again, I won't learn vanilla JS for more than 2 weeks. Hope this comment helps!

Enough is enough when you can use the DOM to build anything you want in vanilla JavaScript. And I mean full stack. You should be able to draw the UI by hand and know why you are selecting the database you are selecting. You should know everything in between too. JS Express Mongoose . You should also know how to use a framework like React and Angular. And you should also be very familiar with debugging in the console, including knowing the quirks about the console output, because the debugger will not show you the most current output at times, and some of what looks like JS objects and arrays aren't actually that, they are a specific type of output for the console itself. You should know why functions can be arguments in JS. You should know about closures. You should how to iterate over nested arrays and objects in JS. You should know what problems the "this" keyword creates and how to handle those issues. You should know how to work with events and how to incorporate them into whatever you are building. If you don't know those things, and you keep your job, its not because you are good. Its because you got lucky and your job is supporting you while you learn. And not every job will do that haha trust me!
Oh and CSS isn't just to style things. CSS can be used through the lifecycle of your application to select elements based on specific criteria. Its is a powerful tool that can add lots of conditional flexibility to whatever you are developing.

I've been working freelance since 2001, but I was working for a company before, so I've been in this business for quite a bit of time. I still come across css elements that I've never heard of, and then when I look at the chart of compatibility, most of these go all the way back to the single digit versions of the various browsers. I don't think it's possible to know and to keep up with all the different new CSS elements that seem to come from nowhere every couple of weeks.
I can, but I've been striving to specialize in CSS for 2 decades and set time for myself to learn every week. But don't ask me to build a simple React component, rebase in Git, write PHP for WordPress without opening a dozen security holes, write a simple last name sort in Vanilla JS from memory, query a database (any database) etc. etc. Striving to become a specialist is not something I recommend to up-and-coming devs.

I was speaking a little rhetorically, but if one purposefully tries to keep up, I'm sure it's possible. I don't build as many websites now because templates and diy technology has killed the freelance market, this is why so many websites look the same and with boring, clunky design. What I don't understand are these companies that make seven figures a year want to use a template or a DIY service and then hire the latest high school graduate to build it for them, and of course this high school graduate knows nothing more about building a website then watching one UA-cam video and then he thinks he's an expert. I've had several website owners come to me and ask for me to tweak their templated website, and I always give them an analogy based upon the work that they do that for as bad of a website they have, it makes more sense to start over and use somebody that knows what they're doing. For example a home building company: I will say this is equivalent to building a One story home to the point of just the studs, and then the homeowner wants them to change the layout or make a bedroom bigger, which would often require to pour more concrete or this change or that change would basically mean you have to start over from the foundation and either poor additional concrete or tear down half of what you built already. All this new technology is very frustrating especially in the hands of people that don't know what they're doing, and they somehow get the big jobs but yet their clients are never satisfied.

Of course then you have certain clients that get snotty and say "if you don't know how to do it just let me know and I'll go to someone else." At that point I usually say good luck and wish them well, hang up the phone and then die laughing.

how long you think does it take to find a job in coding? for example junior react developer
This is a loaded question with lots of variables. I saw a guy that had only been coding for 3 months, land a job cold applying just two weeks ago. I know another guy with 2 years experience still not get a job. The market is really bad right now networking is the way MOST people are getting jobs right now. However anything is possible.

I think we have some time before it's a major problem but also, I can't predict the future. But I would say when AI can REALLY replace programmers AI will be replacing a lot of other jobs too and we will have bigger issues to figure out as humans in general. For now, AI is a tool to be used to make us better programmers

I haven't gotten into typescript yet. Just Google project ideas. Pick something that is most interesting to you. I know that's generic info but the more interested you are in the project the more it's going to help you.
"stop wasting time" thanks buddy, but there's no such thing as wasting time when it comes to learning, learning should NOT be fast, it should be slow and deliberate. You are contributing to the mental health problem in the information age and rushing people by using that kind of language.
