A.J. Robbins II Ik this is 2 years late. But dam ur slow, u wouldn’t wanna fucken double clutch up shifting only downshifting. Ur just slowing yourself down
Another technique is to never use the clutch AT ALL once you've shifted into second. Not on upshifts or downshifts or even moving slowly through traffic. Or even coming to a halt. It does make progress a bit jerky but the money you save on wear and tear to the sole of your left shoe can go towards clutch plates and damage to your gearbox.
You don't even have to ram it in gear, as long as it's rev matched it will mesh up perfectly, which is what the clutch is their for anyways. I barely use my clutch only when I really need to get on it, never power shifted, sometimes a quick shift again when I have get on it pretty fast, other then that iv taken to double clutch in low rpm during slow traffic, slides right into gear.
@@tylervanneste3586 it doesn't always mesh up perfectly tho, that sweet spot is usually around 3200rpm on many cars. That method is worse than using the clutch. Just using that sweet spot does more wear and tear. I'm very familiar with this method and there's times where it grinds / rubs the gears. Not a good method, just use the clutch, clutches can last forever if your not beating or racing the car. One reason people burn out their clutches overtime from daily driving is they just rest their left foot on the pedal without realizing it which is habit. Part of that issue is also because alot of clutch pedals are not evenly lined up with the other pedals, they sit up higher so the bad habit occurs with slightly riding the clutch. Now power shifting and speed shifting does tons of wear n tear. Power shifting is fastest but its just terrible to do which is common sense.
People try to rev match the next gear up by hitting the gas? Just let go of the gas and if you actually know what you are doing you should be able to get into gear with no problem only using the clutch
I was curious about 4 speed shifting for drag racing and so far this video has explained it the best. Most just show someone doing it. The replies below were mostly ignorant.
One of the better videos showing fast shifting. Have watched many others that seem like they are asleep at the wheel. I used to chirp my 1996 Cobra SVT in 4th, not power shifting.
Cool video, brings back memories. I found that most later model trans had pretty decent double/triple cone syncros in 1st/2nd, and sometimes 3rd. The syncros would take quite a beating but nothing a quick rebuild wouldn't take care of. In motorcycles I would shift without the clutch all the time, but their transmissions are a lot different than a cars. Semis I would float gears all the time too, but I never got very good like some of the pros I see on UA-cam lol.
i bought a little Nissan truck power shifted till 5th gear lots of times...took it apart after a couple years to see its wear ,,,not a lot of damage done ....legit
Quick shifting is like half floating gears. Floating would be possible if the engine speed dropped fast enough to go from one gear to another without hitting the safety gate and going right to the next gear. You don't HAVE to use the clutch to shift, but people do upon belief that you DO HAVE to which isn't true. The torque release on the transmission when shifting a synchronized transmission just allows the gears to synchronize with each other instantaneously using the synchronized. Unsynchro transmissions don't have these synchronizers so rely solely on engine speed and road speed for what gear you want. If you can time it just right you can save your clutch and extend its lifespan greatly. I float the gears in my pickup for that reason. Power shifting will just burn your clutch out.
When my clutch went out on my Saab, I had to drive it without the clutch and just shift. So yes you are right, you can do this, but it is not good on your transmission at all. Unless you're absolutely perfect.
BRADY SCHROEDER you should not float gears at all in a synchronized transmission. You will end up breaking your syncros and then you won't have a choice. I've never met a trucker who could float every gear perfectly they will always get a lil grind and that's what's gonna ruin your synros in a reg car or truck. Anyone who says they never grind gears is either a liar or they drive an automatic.
this is from a "senior citizen" who used to drag race mopar 4 speed muscle cars 1969-1972: FINALLY a "young kid" who knows how to power shift a manual trans!
It's funny that most of the comments are assuming you drive the car like this all the time. This is just for racing, people. You can shift without the clutch (someone mentioned it), but that's really just for fun or for when just have to...if your clutch release fails. GwoodBloodz Actually, you NEVER take your foot off the gas. In some cars it's a standard feature like the ZR1. That certain feature is call "No-Lift-Shifting" and it uses the cars PCM to match RPMs. However power shifting can hurt the clutch but mostly in higher gears. That's why he only does it in 1-3 gear.
christian rawlings yes sorry i never released that. Yes the zr1 can do that and its easy to tell, cause the shifts are slow but the revs are stable and the sound is different.
This is an old video I know, but the lack of knowledge and understanding of what power shifting is for and when it should be used is disappointing and some of the comments show pure ignorance of the procedure and facts.
I don't mean any offence to this driver because he is really good at both shifts, but you should never use "power shifting." Not only does it destroy your synchros and clutch, but it's not actually any faster than a properly executed shift (especially with a light flywheel). The real tricks to quick shifts are proper clutch adjustment, your shifter grip , and anticipation. I find it best with clutch engagement only an inch or so off the floor, and to always drive the shifter with the palm of my hand rather than my fumbly fingers.
If done properly it takes years for any damage to show on the synchros and clutch. It is absolutely quicker than regular shifting, at least a couple car lengths. You preload the shift linkage with your arm and just brush the clutch pedal to take enough pressure off of the clutch disc so you can grab the next gear, the disc is never fully released. If you fully release the disc the car is decelerating. If you lift to shift the vehicle is not accelerating at the max.
Now now children, this isnt an everyday driving technique. Dont get any bright ideas. this is something you do on the strip. using this technique in traffic, or someplace that actually has turns in it could result in some very nasty surprises, and im not talking about tranny damage... more like power induced loss of control of the vehicle, due to wheel spin or undesired weight transfer. If they fail...the need replacing anyway. I have had several cars as well as 4x4 chevy and never once did they let me down. Of course the older ones were built better. Good job!

The other thing I see is people worried about breaking parts while drag racing. If you’re worried about breaking stuff don’t drag race at all then. If you drive a stick car and drag race, and ain’t a pussy, you might want to learn how to power shift.
Although you're in the next gear quicker and power is not suspended during shifts I think the extra wheel spin might be slowing you down since the tires are not grabbing the pavement when you release the clutch again. Nice informational video though :)
eatmuscleshitimport Aren't those transmissions used in big trucks? If they have a clutch and you get them in Europe... Then fuck yeah, we'd drive them better! You Americans are getting ahead of yourselves here, you haven't even mastered the regular manual yet hahaa... Pretty sure you won't find that transmission in a regular car anyway, so that comment was kind of irrelevant.
I was power shifting my STI for about a year and half and nothing happened to it. It's the best shifting technique, also it's the most fun and the sound it made was like a rally wrx
I wish I had a manual transmission and a V8. Entertaining video, and I am not offended by your technique or the fact that you are beating the hell out of that car. I beat the holy sheetrock out of my '93 5.0 back in the day, and both the transmission and I lived. Cheers.
Its amazing how many people don't know how to quick shift like that....I dont like the idea of the power shift regardless of what gear, but the quick shift I completely agree with.
when your foot is still on the gas as you power shift, the RPM will go up. its...obvious. racing in a manual cant be as smooth as an automatic car shifting. im guessing your still learning to drive a manual
do you see in the name of the video the word - smooth or shifting smooth ? it says HOW TO POWER SHIFT not how to shift smooth ?! cmon man dont write bullshit
man, its a naturally aspirated car, which means you don't need to powershift you are just doing it for nothing, powershifting is used in a turbocharged or supercharged car, it keeps the engine at full boost between shifts so you don't have to wait for it to spool up again in the next gear causing you to be slower (this is typically used to show off or get your best drag strip time) but i don't see a reason to do it in a N/A car, i don't know this for a fact but i would guess it does not even make you faster enough to take a risk of damaging your car. (yes powershifting is something risky to do you can damage your transmission and in some cases your motor from over revving)
Cam Crysler You can’t really get on someone for their car purchasing choices. It can be due to money or needing for 4 doors. Not everyone can afford to have a ford 5.0 when for example they have a kid or a small family.
Auras Secuianu lol... that's exactly the point that I was making. Most noobs won't over correct of the road because in FWD they won't have to correct at all, they'll just have to deal with a slipping clutch and buy a new 'box after doing it too many times. It is possible to spin a FWD car, you've obviously never rallied into a corner full lock and reefed on the handbrake before.
oh yeah that works good I used to do that in my mustang from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd I would not come off the gas at all just tap the clutch as I ripped the shift
George, yes, never lift the throttle and just take enough pressure off the clutch disc to be able to grab the next gear. Did that street racing in the mid '60's. People that lift off the throttle and fully release the clutch to shift are good to have around because they are easy to beat.
I power shift my civic when I'm at the drag strip while spraying a 75shot of nitrous through the the engine. Been doing it for years no problem. When I'm not racing I'm double clutching like a mother f'er to help my syncho's out a bit from all that power shifting.
@@Sloppyjoe7390 no double clutching between up shifts. I would have my right foot all the way to the floor and then my left pushed on clutch between shifts

actually Americans kind of invented the muscle car bro...we use manual trans quite often. Someone has not done their hw on automotive history i guess...
it all depends on what the car is used for. a simple DD then sure there are a lot of auto cars. Like myself, anyone who has a car that benefits from being a stick(anything thats fun/has power etc) we drive manuals. I have 2 turbo cars that are both sticks and a little crappy honda that is auto. Its all about use. Americans get enough of a bad rap from the media, please dont start assuming things about us. every country has their good and bad. it just appears the dumb ones always find the camera and the keyboard.
generally it seems more people drive automatics in any part of the world as opposed to a manual. Although its less engaging, automatic is often more practical.
Powershift only is useful when you drag race a turbocharged car to keep the turbo's on pressure. It's pretty much useless when you drive a mustang even if it's supercharged
@@Shaqqbro for one you have to tag the person lol secondly what kind of person comments in a social media site correcting someone's spelling ? Are you an English teacher or something? Because your not on the payroll here.
I like how some people are scarred of driving a manual and im 16 and have been driving a manual truck since 15 and now it's my first car. after stalling it at redlights on my first day making many people behind me laugh like crazy, it wasn't bad. in fact I got it down in just a few days. It ain't bad y'all its really no different in fact I think manuals are safer and sometimes more affordable for buying a new car wise not replacing parts wise lol.
I think the stick on your Hurst is backwards. The curve is suppose to face twards the rear of the car but looks like yours is facing twards the dash. Turn it around...
I don't get why everyone is knocking this video? Everyone that goes to the track alot knows power shifting is a very good way to shave time off ur et's and if u do it right (which he is doing just fine the video) then it will not cause premature damage to ur trans. Now other cars I don't know but mustangs I'm definitely sure can take it
Correct title: How to burn up your transmissions sychronizers like a boss. 😛 Nah, just playin. Common sense says that the occasional power shift when needed won't hurt anything. In all honesty, many peoples typical driving habits are probably far harder on their transmission than the occasional power shift. Good vid. not a Ford guy but I have to respect the mustang.
Good job ! To all the critics ---In heads up drag racing this , power shifting , is how it's done . You ALWAYS break parts eventually drag racing . So get over it . If he wants to Power shift , it's HIS car , none of your business . Besides , you ain't paying the bill . Good job driver !
My car was designed to shift like this, keeping your foot on the gas keeps the turbo spooled up. Definitely not recommended for mom's car. Also to all you whining pussies who think you know cars, If you can't afford to fix it, don't drive it like you stole it, and don't race it. #racecar
I had an 09 Cobalt SS that had the NLS feature as well, for keeping the turbo spooled. I would only do it from 2nd to 3rd and then 3rd to 4th. Getting the timing right was tough to do 1st to 2nd
Traviltar Exactly then stop commenting like that. There is a reason why you power shift when you power shift. One example is you power shift so you don't lose turbo spool. When you power shift you will keep turbo spooled and will always be at peak power band. There are other applications where you use power shifting but cba explain everything now it's too long. You don't use power shifting while driving in traffic because you will just waste your clutch and tranny. :v
Joshua Heywood Read my replies i just explained one of the many points of power shifting but no there is no point doing power shifts daily commutes like driving to grossery store or to the job.
Joshua Heywood just as i was saying it's not for every day use. It's a technique for racing. :) Sometimes it's better to win and fuck up your flywheel or gearbox then lose and not win a huge prize. :v

Although you're in the next gear quicker and power is not suspended during shifts I think the extra wheel spin might be slowing you down since the tires are not grabbing the pavement when you release the clutch again. Nice informational video though :)
Wttffff... He shifts that manual like a fuckin' pro for an American!!! He'll be teaching the Europeans next!!!
***** lol you euros have never heard of an auxillary transmission, have you? learn how to drive one of those without grinding and report back
eatmuscleshitimport americans need a youtube video to learn HOW shift! LoL
eatmuscleshitimport Aren't those transmissions used in big trucks? If they have a clutch and you get them in Europe... Then fuck yeah, we'd drive them better!
You Americans are getting ahead of yourselves here, you haven't even mastered the regular manual yet hahaa...
Pretty sure you won't find that transmission in a regular car anyway, so that comment was kind of irrelevant.
Curtis Rowe I stopped after "As an American living in Europe, who drives a muscle car..."
Super douche.
Curtis Rowe Hahahahaaa! Brilliant!
I was power shifting my STI for about a year and half and nothing happened to it. It's the best shifting technique, also it's the most fun and the sound it made was like a rally wrx
I power shifted my jeep for years lol
I wish I had a manual transmission and a V8. Entertaining video, and I am not offended by your technique or the fact that you are beating the hell out of that car. I beat the holy sheetrock out of my '93 5.0 back in the day, and both the transmission and I lived. Cheers.
Its amazing how many people don't know how to quick shift like that....I dont like the idea of the power shift regardless of what gear, but the quick shift I completely agree with.
Love all that RPM overshoot every time you change gear. What a fucking fail.
when your foot is still on the gas as you power shift, the RPM will go up. its...obvious. racing in a manual cant be as smooth as an automatic car shifting. im guessing your still learning to drive a manual
helal mazloum
na you and him just don't know how to shift. You can absolutely shift just as precisely as an automatic.
do you see in the name of the video the word - smooth or shifting smooth ? it says HOW TO POWER SHIFT not how to shift smooth ?! cmon man dont write bullshit
Yea cmon man don't write bullshit
Murmaider, your clearly an idiot.
man, its a naturally aspirated car, which means you don't need to powershift you are just doing it for nothing, powershifting is used in a turbocharged or supercharged car, it keeps the engine at full boost between shifts so you don't have to wait for it to spool up again in the next gear causing you to be slower (this is typically used to show off or get your best drag strip time) but i don't see a reason to do it in a N/A car, i don't know this for a fact but i would guess it does not even make you faster enough to take a risk of damaging your car. (yes powershifting is something risky to do you can damage your transmission and in some cases your motor from over revving)
correct
Amir, just wrong.
It has been making N/A cars quicker since the mid '60's.
Clutches are for wussies, just pull the shifter as hard as you can right when the rev limiter kicks in. Never touch the clutch.
Did you know that the engine power is lower at Limit? In games is called Perfect Shift :D
members.optusnet.com.au/m6666/evo8dyno.jpg
Bostyan87 Yes, but your average power is higher because the revs don't drop so much after the shift.
Depends on your vehicles tune and powerband...but I was joking...kind of
You realize that not all cars have the same powerband, right?
or valve float lmfao
That was some badass shifting bro !!
I tried this and it makes a hell of a difference! And no I don't do it all the time only when I need to lol great video!!
Powershift:HOW TO BREAK YOUR CLUTCH LIKE A BOSS!
Powershift: how to win a drag/street race.
Need to try this in my 4 bangin yaris 😂
Hope no one makes the mistake of buying this car from you in the future lol
nickL7389 Ill buy that Mustang and import it to my country (; just a clutch change.
Cam Crysler You can’t really get on someone for their car purchasing choices. It can be due to money or needing for 4 doors. Not everyone can afford to have a ford 5.0 when for example they have a kid or a small family.
Haha that's the first mustang owner I've ever seen that really knows how to work a clutch
Dude I'm just too slow to power shift like that lol. Great videos and thanks for sharing.
Practice makes perfect. Do it while you drive casualy, without breaking anything
And in powerful cars doing a change like that into second will spin the wheels and a noob driver will over correct off the road.
that depends...if its a fwd powerfull stock car it will never spin xD!!!
Most noob drivers would be doing this in fwd anyway.
Mataz007 lol ... you CANNOT spin a fwd stock car -.-*
Auras Secuianu of course you can, any of the old powerful hatchback will spin off the line, the modern ones wont because of all their tech
RIP CLUTCH
"You don't wanna pull out...as...fast". LOL. thats what she said.
SO many people who don't have a clue how all of this works, hilarious!
yes, saving worthless milliseconds while fucking up the clutch, am i correct?
Finally an explanation on quick shifting.
So many "car pros" in the comments -.-
Your fucking pic lol
lol nice pic
Gaming Droid Are you jealous because you don't know bumfuck about cars?
If you a stick shifter in a country where 99% of the population uses automatic trans, you are a car pro
it's common sense that doing it this way is bad
oh yeah that works good I used to do that in my mustang from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd I would not come off the gas at all just tap the clutch as I ripped the shift
George, yes, never lift the throttle and just take enough pressure off the clutch disc to be able to grab the next gear. Did that street racing in the mid '60's.
People that lift off the throttle and fully release the clutch to shift are good to have around because they are easy to beat.
should i try it with a civic?
I power shift my civic when I'm at the drag strip while spraying a 75shot of nitrous through the the engine. Been doing it for years no problem. When I'm not racing I'm double clutching like a mother f'er to help my syncho's out a bit from all that power shifting.
monutz4u you fucking moron he’s making fun of your car 😂 cause there lawn mowers
@@Sloppyjoe7390 no double clutching between up shifts. I would have my right foot all the way to the floor and then my left pushed on clutch between shifts
you have an awesome mustang
THAT'S how you drive a standard when racing. If you're afraid to break something, then its not for you
I love the smell of clutch in the morning xD
nice mustang man gotta love them
speed shifting* i raced for like 7 years
who gives a fuck lmfao
hahaha youre a crackpot listen to yourself ya freak
Tresim Ruamna
You are extremely odd.
Tresim Ruamna Words of a wise man. Ignorance is bliss I suppose?
Tresim Ruamna Talking like that only shows how much of a tool you are, noone actually talks like that and if you do your probably part of that really fucking weird group of people that everyone stays away from because all ur fucking weirdness is going to give someone a damn stroke
Got an Audi s4 twin turbo full time 4 wheel drive 6 speed manual with many upgrades pumping out damn near 400 horsepower now ! NEVER spins the tires the little Bugar just hooks up and GOES !!
what dose that have to do with this video?
COOL STORY
ite called a biturbo and the drivetrain is called 'quattro'.
*****
awd ;)
You want a cookie?
funny thing is I discovered how to power shift 'by accident' with my mums old subaru when I was younger lol
weird for an american to drive a stick shift, usualy americans drive with a automatic transmission, witch i think sucks. Respect.
Being American has nothing to do with it...respect.
actually Americans kind of invented the muscle car bro...we use manual trans quite often. Someone has not done their hw on automotive history i guess...
Amgbenz0 Someone now understands me, what I ment. :)
it all depends on what the car is used for. a simple DD then sure there are a lot of auto cars.
Granny shiftin, not double clutchin like ya should
Double clutching you come down the gearbox not up you spastic, jesus
Holy fuck, people still not getting reference in 2014
HydraWolf1 You're lucky that 100 shot of NOS didn't blow the welds on the intake.
Almost had ME...? Ya never had me, ya never had your clutch!
HydraWolf1 Now me and the egghead have gotta rip apart the block, and replace the piston rings you fried.
Why wasI staring at his popped out belly... it moved faster than his shifts
Powershift only is useful when you drag race a turbocharged car to keep the turbo's on pressure. It's pretty much useless when you drive a mustang even if it's supercharged
Thanks! I'm gonna try this on my Jeep Compass!
When the outro camera angle is better
Also, this is horrible advice.
Unless your racing
Sterling Hayden you’re*
@@Shaqqbro for one you have to tag the person lol secondly what kind of person comments in a social media site correcting someone's spelling ? Are you an English teacher or something? Because your not on the payroll here.
How to destroy your clutch like a boss.
whata amazing video you have skill man
Thanks! I learned how to power shift and become a Boss all in the same video!
Best way to mess up with your gearbox, clutch and whole transmission. :-)
you can hear the sound of the clutch stressing out :P
How to burn your clutch. Once in a while, like a couple times. But not on every shift. That'll ruin your clutch and synchros
that low end torque was something else when you went into 2nd nice
I like how some people are scarred of driving a manual and im 16 and have been driving a manual truck since 15 and now it's my first car. after stalling it at redlights on my first day making many people behind me laugh like crazy, it wasn't bad. in fact I got it down in just a few days. It ain't bad y'all its really no different in fact I think manuals are safer and sometimes more affordable for buying a new car wise not replacing parts wise lol.
goodbye transmission synchros!
See ya in syncro heaven!
I think the stick on your Hurst is backwards. The curve is suppose to face twards the rear of the car but looks like yours is facing twards the dash. Turn it around...
+Thomas Marquez I just installed my Hurst shifter last weekend (in a Mustang). I can confirm the shift handle in this video is backward.
+George M. So that's how that happened. I was wondering. Thanks for the info man, at least I can sleep easy.
I bet half the kids who watch this have no idea what power shifting is
what point are you trying to make? so what if someone doesnt know something
You use to be one huh ? I can relate. I wonder why the title has, "HOW TO" hmmm I wonder. Oh !! He's gonna teach us what it is !! well then. c:
did ur dad touch u when he taught u how to drive?
We don't need people like you anymore in this world -...-
I don't get why everyone is knocking this video?
"How to drive a car like you don't know what you're doing. "
Who even likes synchros?
Can I do this in my 2004 Corsa?
Thatguy1705 bahahahahahahaha
Good job ! To all the critics ---In heads up drag racing this , power shifting , is how it's done . You ALWAYS break parts eventually drag racing . So get over it . If he wants to Power shift , it's HIS car , none of your business . Besides , you ain't paying the bill . Good job driver !
This guy can fucking drive. Way to go man
My car was designed to shift like this, keeping your foot on the gas keeps the turbo spooled up. Definitely not recommended for mom's car.
Also to all you whining pussies who think you know cars, If you can't afford to fix it, don't drive it like you stole it, and don't race it.
#racecar
That's some truth right there
I had an 09 Cobalt SS that had the NLS feature as well, for keeping the turbo spooled. I would only do it from 2nd to 3rd and then 3rd to 4th. Getting the timing right was tough to do 1st to 2nd
Which car might that be?
you must be a professional racedriver with years of practice to master these skills
Just no.
*Do this if you're a mechanic or have rich parents.*
Hmm, I do this all the time. I didn't know I was power shifting, I just know it's fun as hell through gears 123 in a Mini Cooper S
..you're supposed to LET GO OF THE ACCELERATOR when you switch gears. You are wasting revs for nothing.
Why are you acting like you know everything? Do you even know when you use power shifting? :)
sermerlin1 Like I know everything? Kid, me saying that is like someone saying to you "Breathing is healthy for your body."
Sometimes it's better to win and fuck up your flywheel or gearbox then lose and not win a huge prize. :v
