  • In this game from 1983 Michel Platini, world's brightest star at the moment, faces a young prodigy Michael Laudrup and his national team, affectionately nicknamed Danish Dynamite. Laudrup was just bought by Juventus, a club that Platini was playing for at the time, and he was seen as Le Roi's eventual successor. With only 2 foreigners being allowed to play for one team in Serie A, Platini had to prove that he was still a better player...

Its not just Platini. The Danes played nicely back then, quite total football esque in nature, but man by man the French suqad was LEAGUES above Danish one. It was the best French NT squad of all time until the one from France 98. I don't know why he isn't playing but Jean Tigana in particular was probably the best French CM of all time even above his future reincarnation Patrick Vieira. And I will never forget how they dropped Jose Toure from the squad, the man could've played in any squad in the world but he wasn't good enough to have a room amongst the 23 in the France NT, that's how good they were. That would be the equivalent of Griezmann not even being selected today because there are other more suitable players. It's insane.

Nope they wasnt, that is opinionated bullshit.
Infact most club champions had a Danish star playing a vital role at that time.
Denmark had what all national Eupeans teams could only dream off. A complete team full of starplayers.
Yep it is weird, should not had happen and never will happen again.
But never the less Denmark had that star team other countries only could dream off.

Jose Toure, (fantastic player) was injured ahead of the 1986 World Cup and replaced by Jean Pierre Papin.

I hardly saw Laudrup in the video highlights here. When Platini & Laudrup were both at Juventus, during the 1980s. Platini said, Laudrup was always, the best player in a training match but struggled to reproduce what he did in training, on a consistent basis, in actual league matches. Mind you. Laudrup was around 21, 22, at the time & hadn't reached the incredible level's that he showed in the 1990s. Platini was at his zenith in the first half of the 1980s.

Laudrup’s compilation from the same game is in my previous upload. They obviously weren’t overlapping in terms of their peak, but this game was advertised as Platini vs Laudrup, the kind vs the pretender.
Although my personal favorite version (not the best, mind you) of Laudrup in the one from the second half of the 80’s, when he and Elkjær played up front together for Denmark 🤤

For those who watched soccer at the time (80 - 90), there were really no reason to compare the two. Laudrup was a great player who was up and coming in 85 - 86, but then despite all the skill he never produced the impact and game influence of the very top players which were Platini (82 - 85), Maradona (84-87 till 90), Gullit and Van Basten (88 - 90). Laudrup reached his peak level between 89 - 94, but even then he was eclipsed by lots of other players (Baggio, Romario, and yes even Stoichkov, Papin)... If you take a look at the ballon d'or list of those years, he usually falls into the 7th - 9th place, not higher, and at a time when the ballon d'or was not a marketing tool like now.

      Yeah 😂
Originally wanted to make the compilation for Laudrup, as I knew that he had scored two goals, but from the very first minute it became obvious that I have to do one for Platini as well, he was sublime that night (as well as in most of his games from early 80’s).

@@HarmsFootball Yeah you're right, he absolutely was. While i really like systems football I do miss aesthetic of a 10 sauntering around the pitch making everything tick. The weight of the pass, the agility in tight spaces etc.

They were never counterparts, Platini's counterpart against Denmark was Allan Simonsen.
Denmark won home against France, where Allan Simonsen played a vital role.
Denmark lost in France where Allan Simonsen broke his legg in that match.
Laudrup was just started at the National arena. Not even 20 years.
Platini never reached the level Laudrups reached. Noone compares those 2 since it is pointless.

They were very often compared to one another with Laudrup being seen as a contender for Platini’s throne - even very much literally, since the latter was signed for Juventus in order to replace Platini in a few years. Laudrup had failed to adapt to Serie A though and left the club even before Platini did.
As for their respective peak - I’m not sure if Laudrup was the best player in the world at any point, while Platini was for a couple of seasons - between Rummenigge/Zico of late 70’s and the emergence of Maradona. Even though Laudrup was more talented than Platini.
