  • A new business is making Fenian guns at a factory in Birr County Offaly.
    The award winning Irish designed Fenian gun, a sliding action shotgun with interchangeable barrels and a unique breech opening is manufactured by the Fenian Gun Company in Birr, County Offaly
    The Fenian gun, a vertical barrelled gun has a patented sliding action. It was invented by JK Kavanagh who comes from a long line of gunsmiths. Following a period living abroad, JK Kavanagh returned to Ireland to manufacture his gun.
    With the aid of government grants, the company went into production from the old workhouse in Birr. At peak production, it is estimated 40 guns can be made per week, and the company has provisional orders from Europe and America.
    The factory is currently stockpiling guns for testing and proof marking. A proof house is being set up by the Institute for Industrial Research and Standards in Glasnevin, specifically to deal with the products of the Fenian Gun Company.
    Once proof marked, the Fenian gun can go on sale. It is expected to retail at 50 guineas, one fifth of the price of a similar gun made in England because,
    The gun is engineered and very cleverly engineered at that, this means it can be turned out in almost mass production.
    In March 1969 the Fenian gun was awarded the Gold Medal and the Plaque of Honour at the 17th International Exhibition of Inventors in Brussels, Belgium.
    A ‘Newsbeat’ report broadcast on 28 November 1968. The reporter is Cathal O’Shannon.

    It hung above the kitchen fire,
    Its barrel long and brown,
    And one day, with a boy's desire,
    I climbed and took it down.
    My father's eyes with anger flashed,
    He cried: "What have you done?
    I wish you'd left it where it was
    That's my old Fenian gun!"
    I fondled it with love and pride;
    I looked it o'er and o'er,.
    I placed it on my shoulder
    And I marched across the floor.
    My father's anger softened,
    And he shared my boyish fun
    "Ah, well," he said, "tis' in your breed,
    Like that old Fenian gun !"
    "I remember '67 well,"
    He said, "when lads like you and me
    All thought we'd strike another blow
    To set old Ireland free.
    But broken were our golden hopes;
    I was long months on the run;
    But it did good work for Ireland then -
    That brown old Fenian gun."
    "I was down there in Kilmallock -
    'Twas the hottest fight of all
    And you see" - he bared his arm
    "There's the mark still of a ball.
    I hope the young lads growing now
    Will hold the ground we won,
    And not disgrace the cause in which
    I held that Fenian gun."
    I placed it o'er the fire once more;
    I heard my father sigh;
    I knew his thoughts were turning back
    On days now long gone by.
    And then I vowed within my heart;
    "I'll be my father's son.
    And if ever Ireland wants my aid
    I'll hold a Fenian gun."
    That's years ago; I've grown a man,
    And weathered many a gale,
    The last long year I spent inside
    A gloomy English jail.
    I've done my part; I'll do it still,
    Until the fight is won;
    When Ireland's free we'll bless the men,
    Who held a Fenian gun.

    This is news to me I never knew that guns were made in Ireland, Some time ago my brothers and I brought a friend out for a day's rough shooting, he did not have a gun so we lent one of ours, During the day things got quite so we drive into a very famous town, We happened to see a small gun shop, we went in and had a look around, it had several 2nd handguns for sale, I found a beauty of a double-barrel sidelock gun that was made in Wales, it was for sale at a bargain of a lifetime price, it was a perfect fit for me, I showed it to our friend, he loved it, I was hoping that he would not want it to buy it so I could get for myself, No he wanted this gun, I was the only one in our group who had cash money, I paid for the gun for our friend, and was refunded a few days later, he was one very happy man. I gave up shooting shortly after. I have worked for Holland & Holland gun company from time to time, with James Purdey & Sons those 2 companies make the best sporting guns but I have never forgotten that Wales made gun to this day

    Yet another perfect example of the fact that Brits and Americans are two peoples separated by a common language. I found it impossible to understand a single thing the narrator said.

      The narrator was Irish not British.

      Part of that common language is not calling Irish people British (but also not calling them not British if they’re from the north).

      @@allisondoak9425 What you say is most true, but in this particular case rather irrelevant. English spoken in Britain, Scotland, and Ireland makes up a language group which is dramatically different from the English spoken in North America by us in the U.S. as well as in Canada. In either language group it is not proper to call us Canadian or to call the Canadians citizens of the U.S. Yet we are almost indistinguishable from one another when we speak. I certainly do not think of the Irish as British, whether or not they are from the six counties. However they can be every bit as incomprehensible as the British when they speak. There are a few exceptions to that. English spoken in parts of rural Ulster sounds quite right to me because it sounds very much like English spoken in East Texas, perfectly understandable to me. Also, the English spoken in Galway, which is quite distinctive, is probably the best and most understandable English spoken over in your part of the world.

    There was a farmer I knew who made guns for the loyalists during the "troubles' in N. Ireland. He got away with it for about 6 years until some scumbag reported him, but his guns were for shooting the enemy.....
