The Orthodox Christian Studies Center of Fordham University is pleased to present the 2024 season of our Lenten series "Orthodox Scholars Preach," featuring sermons by leading Orthodox Christian scholars.
The sermon for Pascha is given by Dr. Valeri Karras. Dr. Karras has earned doctorates in patristic theology from the Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki and in church history from The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, and a Master of Theological Studies degree from Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology. In more than 20 years of teaching, she has been a church history and theology professor at the Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University, Saint Louis University, and Hellenic College/Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology, and has taught as an adjunct instructor at Washington University in St. Louis, Lindenwood University, Eden Theological Seminary, and the Patriarch Athenagoras Orthodox Institute at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California. Dr. Karras has also held research and administrative positions at the University of California, Irvine, and at Hellenic College/Holy Cross.
Dr. Karras’ main areas of research interest are women in early and Byzantine Christianity, and sex/gender in early church theology, with additional interests in the area of Orthodox Christianity in ecumenical, interreligious, and feminist conversation. She has published articles, translations, and book reviews in scholarly journals such as Church History, the Journal of Early Christian Studies, Studia Patristica, and Theological Studies, and in such books as the Cambridge Companion to Feminist Theology (Cambridge University Press), Holy Women of Byzantium (Dumbarton Oaks), Justification and the Future of the Ecumenical Movement (Liturgical Press), Thinking through Faith (St. Vladimir’s Seminary Press), and Women Deacons? Essays with Answers (Liturgical Press). She co-edited with Perry Hamalis a collected volume titled Orthodox Christian Perspectives of War, published by the University of Notre Dame Press, and is working to complete her book on Women in the Byzantine Liturgy.
