Funny. I like both German flags. The modern one seems more peaceful and warm, while the other one feels more powerful and cold. Perhaps the old Imperial flag could be used with the military in conjunction with the modern state flag, like the two flags crossing each other on poles.

I'd never really thought about it before, but you're right. It could just be by association, although I do think it's more than that: red-white-black is a very "cold" combination of colours (and one that, moreover, doesn't seem ever to have been used very widely, except in a few Middle Eastern instances). It's noteworthy that the Nazis -- I think, very deliberately -- used the same colours in their design of the German Hakenkreuz (swastika) flag.

About the German flag's origin: that's more or less a myth. Yes, the Lützow free corps did wear black uniforms with red cuffs and golden buttons but we don't know that this is where the colors for the flag originated. You mentioned the "Urburschenschaft" which did use the colors but it wasn't until the Hambach festival that the actual tricolor first appeared. Also, one mistake: you said the first official use was in the Weimar Republic but actually the German Confederation adopted it in 1848 and the Frankfurt parliament used it as the official flag for the very short-lived German nationstate (1848-49). Said German Empire did have a navy and the ships were flying those colors together with the double headed eagle of the German Confederation.
Awesome video, very interesting! The lily pad or "pompeblêd" in the bottom-right caught my attention right away, awesome to hear that you have a Frisian background too, being a Frisian myself :)

The Belgian flag is based on the colors of the coat of arms of the Grand Duchy of Brabant. Not necessarily on the flag of the duchy Brabant. You can still discuss the flag of the duchy.. The flag of the present dutch province Noord-Brabant was also used as the national flag (at least in Antwerp). But still, nice video!!😀
Probably also in the remaining part of Brabant (e.g. around Leuven, Brussels and Nivelles). The colours red and white represent the Duchy of Leuven, founded in the 10th century, and the current chessboard pattern developed sometime during the Middle Ages.

The French flag did not copy the Dutch flag. The Revolutionaries merged together the flag of Paris : a vertical stripe of blue and a vertical stripe of red, with the white color of the House of Bourbon. This was made to represent the union of the King and the people when France was a constitutional monarchy between 1789 and 1792. This is documented.
Well he never said that it was copied from the Dutch. That part was an obvious joke. However it is not that out of the question to think that it had inspired some of the design
3:02 Many Slavic countries, but not all ! We Bulgarians sure wanted to troll them - one horizontal stripe of white, one of green and one of red. No blue. Ha !
Sometimes I think the only purpose of Bulgaria's existence is to troll other slavs. Even your language... while every normal slavic people speak synthetic languages, you speak analytic. With artiсles! Where did you get them?! Not even speaking about a strange way how you choose sides at wars...
The articles? Apparently from Turkish. And I reckon that being allies with the Turks only 37 years after our liberation from their empire is a bit strange too... But you have to admit we gave Slavs (well, some Slavs) a lit alphabet.
Your claim that all the flags of "slavonic" countires are based on russian flag is... simplification, to say the least. E.g. czech flag is based on historcal coat of arms of kingdome of bohemia - silver lion on red background - plus blue wedge added for moravia. That other people label it as "slavic tricolor" later is another matter.
@@jayasuryangoral-maanyan3901 yeah, you are correct, symbolism often serves many things at the same time. Example with the czech flag - since it was red blue white already they used it to symbolise "slavic" slovakia as the whole country was czechoslovakia after all. But still it is important to know the origin and development. Many explanations are implemented ex post to serve various political goals.
@@Hildigis well, it is true that blue-white-red combination is pan-slavic. however, there is one funny trivia. first serbian flag was red-white-blue (just as modern croatian) back in 1835, but both turkey and russia were unhappy with that solution, it reminded them too much on french flag that was fallen on the side. So, they recombined the colors into todays red-blue-white and imposed upon us. No one saw, or cared that it was literally russian flag upside-down!
On the Irish flag, the green stands for the native Gael, the orange for the planted population, and the white for the gulf of incomprehension between the two.
Regarding the French flag, I read in a book on the French Revolution, that the blue represented the Church, the white represented the Monarchy and the red represented the people.
The French flag. National emblem of the Fifth Republic, the tricolor flag was born from the union, under the French Revolution, of the colors of the king (white) and the city of Paris (blue and red).
The Statenvlag is not 'based on' the Prinsenvlag. In fact it probably predates it by quite a while, considering the fact that it was in use as a banner by the counts of Holland in the 14th century. The red being the colour of the Lion of Holland, the white and blue being the colours of the ruling Bavarian House of Wittelsbach.

Boys: 0:10
Well, weed and red light street will provide you of all the love you need
Imagine thinking the Netherlands aren't romantic.
Just go to the Gardens you silly girls.

Dutch land is like the grandpa of flags
Statenvlag actually predates the Prinsenvlag. With the red representing Holland and the white and blue representing the Bavarian counts at the time. Known as the Hollandic flag initially, with the other states complaining which is why it was eventually called the Statenvlag.
if you keep listin the Netherlands as "Northen" if you speak about Norway Iceland or Finland please refer them as "really Northen" countries :D
I just came here to say I love the Egmont overture. Such an epic piece of music.

- Welcome to European Flags, how may I take your order.
- Yes, I’d like one tricolour please
- Very original.
- Oh, and a seal on the front.
- Daring today, aren’t we?
@@r.v.b.4153 Yes, I know, the red-white Brabant flag was also very often used in schips in the ports of Antwerp and on the river Scheldt (de Schelde).
But it indeed it originally came or was used in the area of the county of Leuven.
Wrong. The yellow and black come from the flemish flag and the red comes from the city of Liège

Dude, seriously? do your research, it even stands on wikipedia.... 😂😂😂
nl.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vlag_van_Belgi%C3%AB
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Belgium
That also counts for the coat of arms of Belgium, they both are inspired of of the grand-duchy of Brabant, 😂😂😂
Do even kwow something about (your?) Belgium history? YOU are the one that is defenitly wrong!!
The most historicains kwow that the colours of the flag were adopted of the coat of arms of the grand-dichy of Brabant.
It's a well kwow fact.....
Please, next time do your research...

I do't know exactly what you mean, I am dutch by myself and live near the border of Belgium. 😀
This might be the greatest video on the platform
The French flag did not copy the Dutch flag. The Revolutionaries merged together the flag of Paris : a vertical stripe of blue and a vertical stripe of red, with the white color of the House of Bourbon. This was made to represent the union of the King and the people when France was a constitutional monarchy between 1789 and 1792. This is documented.
Well he never said that it was copied from the Dutch. That part was an obvious joke. However it is not that out of the question to think that it had inspired some of the design
Than they copied it from the Dutch... 😉
The French flag represents France's best: Red for the wine, Blue for the landscapes, and Green for the people.
Why the yellow jackets on the Prise de la Bastille painting? ;)

Many Slavic countries, but not all !
The flag of Milan is not a St George's cross. It's a St Ambrose Cross. St Ambrose was Bishop of Milan in the 4th century.
They can be based on both. A similar thing happened when the french flag was adopted and adapted abroad
This feature is annoing
Regarding the French flag, I read in a book on the French Revolution, that the blue represented the Church, the white represented the Monarchy and the red represented the people.
The French flag. National emblem of the Fifth Republic, the tricolor flag was born from the union, under the French Revolution, of the colors of the king (white) and the city of Paris (blue and red).
Americans: WE ARE THE RED, WHITE AND BLUE!!!!
Netherlands, France, England, and literally every Slavic country: bruh.
@12:20 But the Irish colour is blue, not green?
isorrowproductions wants to know your location
the change from orange to red in the dutch flag is maybe the funniest fun fact about flags that i know
that weird rap reminds me of a comedian doing rap battles between politicians
Hi, the flag at 2:52 is not the imperial standard, it is a regimental flag
What about the red, yellow, and blue countries? (Romania, Andorra, Moldova, etc.)
You forgot the best country in the Balkans. Да живее България!
Hilbert dude I love your heavy use of memes they're all just awesome
What is the deal with the Nederlands meme? Is the narrator dutsch?
Yes, he's dutch, but he lives in England
He's British with Dutch parentage.
Yea he's dutch, hence the nationalism
At 12:20 or around about that you mentioned the Irish green but the national colour of Ireland is blue, have you or would you do a video on the Irish flag and where the green actually came from?
You show the Hungarian flag in the intro and speak nothing of it. :S
Most Venerable Hilbert, would you consider examining Ambrosius Aurelianus and other historic leaders who are attributed to the character of King Arthur?

ha ha, surrender joke. Very clever. How about explaining the real reason why its white.
@@gerben2401 It was the royal color/former flag of france.
i'm late, the joke was already made, but "because the people were white lololol"
French here, we forgive the surrender joke, we like our Dutch neighbors , they're goofy :)
To answer your question , pure white was the color of God and royalty in France, the french kingdom had Golden Lis on a white background as its flag for centuries
isn´t the french flag the 2 colors of Paris flag crushing the monarchy (white) between it?
stop teasing us!
It's only half an hour man
Why does the Irish flag have a green white and orange tricolour flag?
The Dutch rap song when you Show Wilhelm pls
