I watched this mainly out of disbelief. Oh, and the fact Kirby got 16K+ views for a shoe shining contest is nothing short of impressive. I dare you to find anyone else who can do that. 😂
As someone else posted, this is better than the hot dog eating competitions. I feel something is actually being accomplished in this and not being wasted as in the other.
@@josephschmeggins6311 I read this comment as I’m currently sitting outside in the outskirts in between Salinas and Castroville literally starting at a Brussel sprout field getting harvested haha. What a random coincidence you saying that and me reading this. These will literally be the fields they harvest the sprouts for the festival most likely.
I just watched a video with somebody restoring a Thunderbird die cast toy and said in that how deep the you tube crafts rabbit hole was and now I'm watching shoe shining, next I'll find something to do with old wood maybe.
It's amazing what those guys can pull off in such a short time. I have the Safir products, I've practiced on my daily wear shoes, but on my new AE's I just can't come close to this. Not at all. I have a "shiny" surface but not close to mirror. I'm definitely going to try again tonight. Congrats to them.
Different leathers shine differently. Just a view tips that you can use as a beginner, maybe it helps. Especially with new shoes. 1. Make sure you apply enough wax, that the pores of the leather get filled with wax. Give the wax a bit of time to dry between applications. Make sure the wax is hard before applying the next coat and do not use too much pressure while applying the next layer, because otherwise you might remove more wax than you apply. This is especially important if you use neutral colour waxes. If you use pate de luxe you need to wait significantly longer between applications, with mirror gloss 5 -10 minutes between application should be enough before the wax is dry. For a cap I would use 8-10 layers of wax. You can also brush the shoes with a soft brush like goat hair, to smooth the leather, before applying another coat. I found out that it makes it more easy to achieve a shine later, when you start with a smooth surface. What is also important: Use very little water and make sure you have the right cloth to polish the shoes to a high shine. One or two drops of water for a cap are enough and polish in circular motion until the water is gone, once the water is gone, apply one or two drops again and keep polishing until you like the shine. Take your time while polishing and again not too much pressure. There a more advanced techniques I can explain but hopefully that will give you a good and consistent starting formula. If you have more questions just ask
@@KMaybach1 thanks Anton, I did work (only two) more layers into the cap, probably puts the total to ~8. I also ran two on the body, just to bring some minor shine to the rest of the shoe. I'll work on them again this evening just light polishing to see if they improve anymore. Cheers guy.
Web guy, there are lots of (perhaps) unimportant life skills: shoe polishing, knife sharpening, fabric repair, circuit soldering, electronics repair, watch repair. They are (for me) simply hobbies I like to do watching an evening show before working again. Some educate, some entertain, some have practical value, but they are all fun and expand your base of knowledge. Not a single person has ever said a word to me about my polished shoes (or frankly a watch on my wrist). But, I wear and display things for my enjoyment and whatever subliminal image it may or may not project to the world. Give the polishing a try, you might be surprised.
Certainly more appealing than a hot dog eating contest! Speaking of shining, I recently bought a pair of AE Strandmoks in Ivory. How should I shine them? Is Renovateur safe on them? Also, what is the best belt for shoes of this color? AE does not make a matching belt. Thanks and GREAT suit!
Ash's suit is amazing I wonder what brand that is. I have a feeling it could be ring jacket. I think as more people compete in the world championship they should change the way they judges are picked. I believe it should be judged by pervious winners and it should be a reward that can only be earned once. That would better promote the championship and give some respect to winners.
@@qarhsi I'm not a fan of Kirby's suit. This style of big lapels is making a come back which can look pretty good on some people. On a little guy like Kirby big lapels and pant cuffs paired with a slim cut makes you look extra tiny.
@@WatchWatchlistyou make a fair enough point. But I guess it comes down to personal preference too (i.e. the lapels) + whether the person can pull off the look
Exellent as always! There is so much to learn from your videos) Recently by the way I have ordered my first pair of bespoke shoes, black semi brogue oxfords. Could someone please tell me whether it will be appropriete to wear them daily to office with a black three-piece suit or this type of shoes is not formal enough?)
When I used to shine my boots, I used nothing but black polish, cotton balls, water, panty hose, and a brush. Would get a mirror finish. You could cheat, and put polish on, and then use a lighter to melt it on shoe/boot, then shine with a wet cotton ball. But that's cheating lol.
I have these exact shoes, it's interesting to see them so well polished, however I must say, I'm not a fan of how the toecap seems to stand above the welt at front, if that makes any sense, it has a pronounced curve inwards as it goes under, rather than just cutting in. Not as elegant in my opinion!
When a video is initially uploaded, UA-cam sends it out in low quality in the interests of speed. 2-3 hours later and the high quality video will be available.
he is really good, i went to mason smith multiple times and they just knew exactly what makes a shoe shine, many people think its the cloth but its not, its the BASE layers that mattered and how you apply them, the timing during each application makes it such that the layer before must dry off before the next base layer, though how many base layers or how much thickness is still a mystery
I'm glad these people's talents are getting a chance to shine..............
UA-cam admins, please ban this gentleman
@@Kids11111 if the shoe fits 🙄

They put their heart and sole into it!

Never would I have ever thought that there was a championship shoe shining. Not knocking it, just never knew.
Your mind will be blown when you hear about the circle drawing championships! Place goes wild 🤣

Wow... been trying to get a quality shine for years. Learnt the secrets in one video. 👍👌
Don’t be surprised, mate. Santa Cruz has an annual Brussel Sprout festival. So many things we don’t know exist are big deals for a lot of people.

Wow! All the days shining his shoe during his national service really helps!
Amazing wotk. No one really lost at this level.
Incredible, great to see you showing us the world of shoes....
Kirby you make me laugh sometimes. Absolute expert of tying himself in a knot mid-sentence :) Thanks a lot for the video, always a pleasure to watch!
Congratulations Christian. ❤️That shoe really "shines bright like a diamond" 💎💜💙
John Leguizamo sure can shine a mean shoe. That gentleman in the middle with the gray suit was him, right? 😅
Christian is truly world class! Well done on an amazing effort and shine.

I bet I could’ve had a shot at winning this when I was in the Navy lol!

Shininess.
If I had a whole warehouse of these gentlemen...
This comical style music fits this "competition" totally 😊
The Japanese shoe shining contestant is the most appropriately dressed
Think middle guy did the best one even tough I don't realy like the patina stuff.

Lol. I love the choice of music.

Buy shoes to wear not to lock away in a cupboard.
It's interesting to see the winner use mirror gloss first

Tune in next week for the world championship Shirt Ironing competition
What does it take to shine bright in this competition I wonder?
No spit shine?
Alright, let's see
How are they having this without Tommy? Did he go to get his shinebox?
Where is Spit-Shine Tommy? He'd make your shoeslook like mirros.
what if they will allow the contestants to choose what brand of wax they will use. it's like a car racing. you can choose the engine you want.
They didn’t play a snappy tune with their shinning rags as they shined them like I saw in Chicago and New York.
I always favor the guy who gets the least polish on my socks.
