It's not important literally right after Mikasa says her answer would've changed what happened Eren shows up and says that everything was HIS choice right from the start. I think Mikasa has to learn that her ideal Eren=/= who he actually is. She needs to accept he's not the person she wants him to be. Maybe there what lets her go against him. We'll see.

Shippers apart, the story really guided you to empathize with these two terrific characters and the love shared between the two. I know that AoT is not a good example of romanticism… so why create a relationship like that then, putting all these moments between the two (like this one and many others either from Mikasa and Eren side) in the making if you don’t want it to bloom someday. Is legit like a flower that you take care of every single day but at the end (after all the hard work) you let it die, even though it was so close to blooming.

Mikasa was shy because they were in the circumstances of the war she couldn't tell if it's the right time to admit her feelings frankly by words in such situation. Maybe in another Time of peace she could tell him the words he wished to hear.
While I think this scene was adapted pretty nicely I still can't help but notice the tiny little inconsistency in Eren's behavior when Mikasa gives him the family answer which is leading many anime onlys to believe Eren was relieved at the answer. In the manga he looks pretty depressed and not at all satisfied with the answer. Depressed look continues as the others find them. "Perfect timing" carried a sarcastic tone which made it obvious he didn't want anyone else there and he didn't get from her the answer he wanted to hear. This here is yet another bunch of inconsistencies when it comes to eren's expressions in the anime, which is a small error in itself but ultimately misleading when you get to know the conclusion of this whole thing. Eren doesn't know Mikasa loves him the way she does, yet he wants her to. Throughout the story Eren never really understood what "family" meant for Mikasa.( even Mikasa doesn't). Their inability to understand each other due to "never really talking" (one of the most important themes in the story as a whole) is a crucial aspect of their relationship. This scene isn't one where they resolve their misunderstandings (like s2 finale) but one where the misunderstandings pile up drifting them apart. Mikasa's answer *would* have changed the course the story which was why it couldn't happen( and didn't happen) because it would mess with the deterministic future. The finale will confuse you if you don't see the nuance here. Even if you ignore all this, it's pretty obvious from Eren asking Zeke about Mikasa that he wasn't satisfied with the family answer and believed there was something more to her "care" for him. And from where did he get the idea about the Ackerman bond? His own future memory of lying to Mikasa about it as shown in the beginning of his monologue. So Eren believed his own lie to Mikasa and got depressed without even knowing where his own future self got the info from, assuming it would have been from Zeke, and thereby asking Zeke about it only to find no such thing existed and ultimately figuring out it was lie he himself made up when it was too late to change his path. (4 years left to live is Eren trying to be selfless and brushing it aside to save himself the pain of realizing there was a part of him who would rather have had that with her than follow this path)
mikasa did question herself in the episode in the present the if she had said a different answer would all this be happening so we can see from that that mikasa knew it might not have been the answer eren wanted

I would want to add that Eren asked Zeke about Mikasa's feelings was because he couldn't believe that Mikasa loved a piece of shit like him unconditionally, the idea is that Eren literally hated himself so much that he could not believe that she could love him so deeply and purely, that was the all point of asking Zeke, practically he knew she loved him but didn't understood why because he felt he didn't deserved such a devotion from her part. He truly loved her in my opinion, so much that he lied to her at the table so that when he dies to be much easier to her , they break my heart!
@@kissofarose100 yep! Eren taking his scarf and giving it to mikasa right after he kills for the first time is also very symbolic now, and falls in like with this idea. It's almost like he took off his own beauty/humanity and gave it to mikasa because he himself wouldn't be able keep it. And now, the only way for him to love himself is to see himself through her eyes. Mikasa is Eren's window to his own humanity.
Love was the key to freeing Ymir. But I think here love would have been the key to freeing Eren as well. I think had Mikasa told Eren how she really feels, he most likely would have went against destiny and fate and not try to rumble the world. Opting for a different path instead. He already knew her answer, but deep down he wanted her to say the opposite.
Family for Mikasa is all the people who holds closely in her heart. If only she would have confessed her true feelings, like she ended up saying, Eren would have ran away with her. It truly was heartbreaking to see them parting ways in the end. My only comfort is that Aot School Caste is canon in this AoTverse, and in that universe both love each other too.
We really need an alternate timeline OVA where Mikasa is able to be more direct with him right here and they run away from the war together (like in the memory he sends her later).
I won't ever change my opinion. Aot has one of the best, if not the best OST I've ever heard. And MAPPA made this season and episode amazing, 10/10. Well, see you all in 2023!
i don’t want to criticise mappa, but as a manga reader it just didn’t have the emotional impact than it did in the manga. Eren in the manga genuinely looked sad and teared up before mikasas answer as he knew she would say family. In the anime it seems that eren is unbothered by her response and he knows what she will say.
On the contrary, look at his face at the 0:39 minute. He was really like a lover waiting for an answer, and he begged her with his eyes to give him a satisfactory answer. He was hollow inside, as if dead, but as he waited for Mikasa's answer, there was a glimmer of hope in his eyes and great hope. And eager for her answer
Eren: "What am I to you?" Mikasa: " You're more than family to me because I love you since you saved me as a kid. I wanted to be by your side all my life even if you haven't, I wanted to move forward with you."
More precisely his side face as if the word “family” is the rhetorical question like the basic answer that he knows all too well but won’t satisfy him, but then the camera focuses on his full face when he asked “who am I to you?” or in the precise translation “I am your who?” showing his emotion in that question
Never got much emotion for any relationship while watching a show(except for few), but when eren said "what i am to you" don't know man there was little tears in my eyes,maybe because i watched them being together for years now

Spoiler Warning! Ofcourse we'd prefer they expressed their love for eachother here and a happy ending where they left and could be together forever. However, as heartbreaking as this scene is, regardless of Mikasa's answer she expressed her love for Eren in her actions and Eren already knew her real answer. Despite the tragedy of this scene it is beautiful as it embodies the sacrifice of their own happiness and love for their friends. Ofcourse they would have desired to have left and lived in peace together, but Eren only had 4 years left after which Mikasa would be alone and Paradis destroyed. "The world is cruel, but I still love you". This perfectly encapsulates that the world broke them through the sacrifices they made. Eren sacrificed his final years of happiness with Mikasa to stay and defend Paradis so his friends could live peaceful lives. Mikasa sacrificed her love to save what remained of the world. Despite the cruelty of these sacrifices they loved eachother and what matters is their freedom, resilience & choice to rise above that pain and see the beauty in the world, their love. It eases the heartache of this scene knowing despite the dark path Eren went down after this, he still lived a meaningful and fulfilling life where he loved and was loved both in the paths with Mikasa and the world. The world is cruel, but it's also beautiful because of the love Eren and Mikasa had for eachother and their sacrifice. They were eachothers constant companion and peace. I feel at peace knowing that Eren lived a meaningful life and is at peace
The moment Mikasa wondered if things would have went in a different way if she answered differently really hits hard since, in my opinion, it would’ve been the same. Eren just wants her and his friends to live a happy life, even at the cost of giving up everything and becoming a monster in their eyes (and those of the entire world). Such a cruel world, as it has always been

While I think this scene was adapted pretty nicely I still can't help but notice the tiny little inconsistency in Eren's behavior when Mikasa gives him the family answer which is leading many anime onlys to believe Eren was relieved at the answer.
In the manga he looks pretty depressed and not at all satisfied with the answer. Depressed look continues as the others find them. "Perfect timing" carried a sarcastic tone which made it obvious he didn't want anyone else there and he didn't get from her the answer he wanted to hear.
This here is yet another bunch of inconsistencies when it comes to eren's expressions in the anime, which is a small error in itself but ultimately misleading when you get to know the conclusion of this whole thing.
Eren doesn't know Mikasa loves him the way she does, yet he wants her to. Throughout the story Eren never really understood what "family" meant for Mikasa.( even Mikasa doesn't). Their inability to understand each other due to "never really talking" (one of the most important themes in the story as a whole) is a crucial aspect of their relationship.
This scene isn't one where they resolve their misunderstandings (like s2 finale) but one where the misunderstandings pile up drifting them apart. Mikasa's answer *would* have changed the course the story which was why it couldn't happen( and didn't happen) because it would mess with the deterministic future.
The finale will confuse you if you don't see the nuance here.
Even if you ignore all this, it's pretty obvious from Eren asking Zeke about Mikasa that he wasn't satisfied with the family answer and believed there was something more to her "care" for him. And from where did he get the idea about the Ackerman bond? His own future memory of lying to Mikasa about it as shown in the beginning of his monologue. So Eren believed his own lie to Mikasa and got depressed without even knowing where his own future self got the info from, assuming it would have been from Zeke, and thereby asking Zeke about it only to find no such thing existed and ultimately figuring out it was lie he himself made up when it was too late to change his path. (4 years left to live is Eren trying to be selfless and brushing it aside to save himself the pain of realizing there was a part of him who would rather have had that with her than follow this path)
mikasa did question herself in the episode in the present the if she had said a different answer would all this be happening so we can see from that that mikasa knew it might not have been the answer eren wanted

a very good take on their relationship that is canon. I would want to add that Eren asked Zeke about Mikasa's feelings was because he couldn't believe that Mikasa loved a piece of shit like him unconditionally, the idea is that Eren literally hated himself so much that he could not believe that she could love him so deeply and purely, that was the all point of asking Zeke, practically he knew she loved him but didn't understood why because he felt he didn't deserved such a devotion from her part. He truly loved her in my opinion, so much that he lied to her at the table so that when he dies to be much easier to her , they break my heart!

It's almost like he took off his own beauty/humanity and gave it to mikasa because he himself wouldn't be able keep it. And now, the only way for him to love himself is to see himself through her eyes. Mikasa is Eren's window to his own humanity.

Family for Mikasa is all the people who holds closely in her heart. If only she would have confessed her true feelings, like she ended up saying, Eren would have ran away with her. It truly was heartbreaking to see them parting ways in the end. My only comfort is that Aot School Caste is canon in this AoTverse, and in that universe both love each other too.
All of this was a movie the main three were watching, that’s why The gothkasa meme is a thing. So all of them are away from this nightmare in reality

i don’t want to criticise mappa, but as a manga reader it just didn’t have the emotional impact than it did in the manga. Eren in the manga genuinely looked sad and teared up before mikasas answer as he knew she would say family. In the anime it seems that eren is unbothered by her response and he knows what she will say.
On the contrary, look at his face at the 0:39 minute. He was really like a lover waiting for an answer, and he begged her with his eyes to give him a satisfactory answer. He was hollow inside, as if dead, but as he waited for Mikasa's answer, there was a glimmer of hope in his eyes and great hope. And eager for her answer

Ofcourse we'd prefer they expressed their love for eachother here and a happy ending where they left and could be together forever. However, as heartbreaking as this scene is, regardless of Mikasa's answer she expressed her love for Eren in her actions and Eren already knew her real answer.
Despite the tragedy of this scene it is beautiful as it embodies the sacrifice of their own happiness and love for their friends. Ofcourse they would have desired to have left and lived in peace together, but Eren only had 4 years left after which Mikasa would be alone and Paradis destroyed.
"The world is cruel, but I still love you". This perfectly encapsulates that the world broke them through the sacrifices they made. Eren sacrificed his final years of happiness with Mikasa to stay and defend Paradis so his friends could live peaceful lives. Mikasa sacrificed her love to save what remained of the world. Despite the cruelty of these sacrifices they loved eachother and what matters is their freedom, resilience & choice to rise above that pain and see the beauty in the world, their love.
It eases the heartache of this scene knowing despite the dark path Eren went down after this, he still lived a meaningful and fulfilling life where he loved and was loved both in the paths with Mikasa and the world. The world is cruel, but it's also beautiful because of the love Eren and Mikasa had for eachother and their sacrifice. They were eachothers constant companion and peace. I feel at peace knowing that Eren lived a meaningful life and is at peace
