Summary: UFOs are seen around Tokyo. Because they look like giant starfish the aliens cannot approach us without creating panic. Hence one of them sacrifices itself and takes the form of a popular female singer. It/she warns mankind that a meteor will crash on Earth. While the approaching meteor causes hotter and hotter weather, mankind runs and builds a last-chance anti-meteor weapon.

I was thrilled to see your dad Robin. He's a delight!😊
He should have a regular section. That was funny.
Yeah...Dad's got the Science.
I was thrilled to see his CRT monitor
I like that he's always got a new piece of scientific kit every time,
I bet the loft-space is crammed with 'em 😂_👍
One of my favorite non-kaiju Japanese movies.
Your dad is a treasure.
1978's *Message from Space* is pretty epic (Japanese Star Wars-ish + Weird seed-mysticism) as well
ua-cam.com/video/GEmGbpgRzNE/v-deo.html
Your father is a delight, review more Sci-Fi movies with shaky ideas so he can point out the hokey science in them please!
I love the episodes where they consult Dad! He's hilarious 👍
"No." :-)
Your dad showing up is always a nice surprise! It was also nice to hear him say more than just |"No."
And I also have also '50s sic-fi film to seek out!
a planet that share earth orbit but are in the other side of the sun is one of those old theory that was popular once during sci fi circle but i can't remember who brought it up. It was up their with aliens visiting earth in ancient times and all other sci fi theory such as that
I never get tired of that "no!"
@@Marveryn oh, that's all true! I should know, and now you do too.
You coercing your dad to do your evil bidding brought a happy tear to my eye.
I have often wondered what plans 1 through 8 actually were.
On a side note, astronomers used to believe that there was an unseen planet which was affecting the orbit of Mercury.
Yes, it was provisionally named Vulcan until using General Relativity Mercury's Stange orbit was explained which ruled out a planet closer to the Sun
Einstein 1 Newton 0
I imagine it involved things so mundane and ineffective that no one even bothered to document the failures. Like tax evasion, and feeding pigeons in the city.
The Rifftrax guys came up with a song about plans 1-8: ua-cam.com/video/q6iwpV3xPME/v-deo.html
Your stupid minds, stupid, stupid!
The best Science advisor in the world.
And by far the most adorable! ♥️
Your science-advisor dad is adorable!
The design of the star-shaped alien is by Taro Okamoto, an avant-garde artist who was in charge of the monument "Tower of the Sun" at the Osaka Expo in the 1960s.
Finally, a real fun fact.
Cheesy, Yes! But I did really admire that they were going for something budget mindedly simple as starfish space people.
It feels distinctly Japanese and is wonderful for it.
Honestly the biggest problem is just the straight, flat lighting
- if they'd been placed in some interesting shadows / angles I think it could work (for the era / budget etc)
I just discovered this channel. And I'm so freaking glad I did.
Maybe films should carry a stamp of approval from your Science Advisor? I know I'd trust him!
As a kid growing up in the 70s, on Sunday mornings I was glued to the TV cause they showed monster movies like Godzilla, Gamera, etc. & I kept a memory my whole life of that star with an eye in the center. I didnt see much of this film before my folks rushed me & my sister to church, but that star eye thing remained, & now finally know where it came from.
That "planet directly opposite the earth" thing has been done more times than I would have believed possible: the movie Journey To The Far Side Of The Sun, John Norman's series of Gorr books, even Counter Earth from Marvel comics.
i think there was a movie about it with Cameron Mitchell?
Consulting Dad was genius. Funny guy.
I love how throughout this series, you've continually offered more and more legitimately good film criticism.
He made bad movies look good, except for Sean Connerie's 1974 "Zardoz"
@@Charlesputnam-bn9zy- Nothing can make that look good. I saw the movie. Connery's outfit is even stupider in motion.
@@julietfischer5056
I 've never seen a movie deliberately bad made, except for Zardoz.
Not even Robin could make this movie look bad, it being hyper-worse already.
@@Charlesputnam-bn9zy - Boorman was high when he made it.
@@julietfischer5056
Fortunately I never saw the movie.
But I read the book based on it.
I never managed to finish it.
Fortunately too.
Even the book
was bad.
Great seeing your dad again, absolute legend 🙌
I love that the alien design is basically the main villain in James Gunn's Suicide Squad. It amazes me how much 50s sci-fi influences so much of what we watch today.
James Gunn's adaptation of Suicide Squad is based on the comic book Suicide Squad. and the villain in the movie was originally featured in 50s Justice League comic.
aside from the influence of the basic look (starfish/eyeball), the comic incarnation is completely unrelated and distinct from the Japanese movie.
@@orinanime +
Ah hmm, well, I'm keeping my
👁️ on you nevertheless.
@@kzinful alrighty then
Look up NASA's info on Planet X.
I've always loved how they find the amnesiac woman in the lake and immediately take her out of the area where she was found - where family members could find her or her memory could come back.
And the Doctor who was kidnapped for a month in a chair and his suit is completely clean.
Absolutely brilliant work Robin, Graham, and Dr. Dad! 😎👍
1:19 Never noticed the upside down ad before
SCIENCE ADVISOR!!! WE LOVE YOU!!
Your father is the BEST 🙂 He should have his own UA-cam channel.
Your science adviser has the coolest stuff in his office.
And advanced aliens that couldn't find their asses with both hands in their back pockets? Hard to beat the ones from Plan Nine From Outer Space.
Miniature trebuchet!
@@lakrids-pibe I want one!
But all of us on Earth are idiots!
There were a few movies that had the "planet opposite the Sun from the Earth" (Wikipedia calls it "Counter-Earth") plot; like this film, "Gamera Vs Guiron" , and the failed TV-Pilot "The Stranger", which was shown on MST3K as "Stranded in Space". And that last one was in the early 70's!
It was also used in "Journey to the Far Side of the Sun".
@@rsacchi100 shouldn't that be *nuS eht fo ediS raF ehe ot yenruoJ?*
it's also the plot of the animated series Spider-Man Unlimited
Well, in Dalek Invasion Earth, Daleks can, apparently, be destroyed by driving ex-GPO Morris J vans at them. The van in question would be around 150 years at that point. As Classic Car Weekly said that tells you a lot about Morris quality.
Big love to your Dad ! Also, I know it was the 50’s but surely those alien costumes coulda been better 😅
I vaguely recall my sisters being repulsed by the starfish with eyes costumes, "EEEEWW!" is what they said then changed the channel to American Bandstand. So I never got to see what the film was about. Science Fiction Theater was hit and miss back in the day.
The quality of the print looks superb. Stunning.
Agreed. I think I saw a very poor print of this 20 years ago. I loved the Starro aliens. I’ll have to revisit.
Arrow Video put out a great looking Blu-ray a few years ago.
The Science Advisor for the win!
"There's a starfiiiiiish,
with one giant eye.
It said it came to warn us
But then almost let us fry!"
Your dad is awesome!
they look like Maggie Simpson's winter jacket
I bet you that guy is hot as hell in that starfish costume.
Agreed 🤣
LOL!!! This movie, your review, and your dad were all AWESOME. :-D
The Starfish costume was used in another Japanese Scifi movie. It was a B&W movie. In that film they were part of a council who sent Starman to protect the Earth from other alien invaders. It's been a very, very long time since I've seen the movie, so some of the details may be wrong. The lead wore a skin tight costume. I read the actor hated doing the movie and never wanted to talk about his participation in the movie.
Woah I had this on dvd as a kid, it came in one of those cheap multi-movie collections. I always loved this movie.
I heard in some documentary that this movie had some kind of influence over Stanley Kubrick during the pre-production of _2001: An Space Oddissey._ He really, really wanted to show non-humanoid aliens at the end of his film but every concept they tried ended up looking silly
Never show when you can hint.
Dark Corners long suffering Science Advisor!! A veritable Doctor and the Brigadier!
Love this movie, peak golden age Japanese sci-fi. It was also the first color Japanese sci-fi film.
I do love it when your Dad says more than just "no"'!
This reminds me of the Starman films.
Hurrah for the return of the Science Advisor!!
I am glad to see you referenced Plan 9. When you said Plan B in your narration, I immediately thought of Plan 9. Your dad reminded of David Atttenborgh in that shot.
I'm just glad this review is over 3 minutes.
Your father is very nice to put up with this.
🎵”Are you gettin it?” “Yes Armageddon it!”🎵
When it comes to aliens who see themselves as superior, but are actually just being jerks, I'm reminded of the Xenomorphs in "It Came From Outer Space" (1953). Granted, the message of the film is important, but the aliens' actions are still "we can do whatever we want to whomever we want because we are superior".
So they're like Americans then.
@@gregghill2059 Well, I think that has been a problem with most conquering nations throughout human history.
@@RavenHouseMystery True.
True story- I JUST found this on Prime and gave it a watch. Yeah, the alien costume is pretty hokey, but the 'alien-ness' of a six-foot starfish was, at the time, unique, pre-dating the comic book Starro by four years.
Shocking to think that I saw this on TV in 1975, in its original black and white format, and so did at least one other 8 year old kid at school! And it was a topic of conversation! But making sense isn’t so important when you’re a kiddo. All you need is some monsters, and the movie is watchable.
😎fun movie
Robin’s dad fan club here 👏🏻
Blimey, a film I've actually seen before Robin reviewed it!
An odd film. I think it benefits from people at the time not really having worked out yet what the "rules" should be for cinematic science fiction; it's certainly not one of those films that progresses lazily along obvious plot lines. Some parts of it, including some of the effects, are actually nicely done... and other parts are very weak, or don't seem to make sense. I was left wondering whether it had been cut down, because some of the story does seem to be missing. The tone migrates all over the chart as well, but starting off dry and gradually becoming goofy is certainly better than the converse.
Definitely worth checking out. Much more interesting than the usual 1950s alien "invasion" fodder... and it's in colour!
Oh yeah, some of it does feel missing. Like what happened to those bad guys? Their leader kept showing up throughout the movie, but the last we see them is when they tie up Dr. Matsuda for not giving them the formula and they're gone for the rest of it. Not even a random scene of them getting killed in the destruction.
You're both right, it's a edited down version of a serial of which they created 4 films of jumbled mess.
Bought, butchered, and dubbed in English with no integrity of story maintained.
And probably the budget had dropped throughout the series accounting for the quality differences you can see when all edited to tell 4 different stories, recycled from the one series.
@@alienmindwarp3455 Ah! That would explain a lot. Thank you. 😀
Andrew Gwilliam,
have you seen ''Gorath'' & ''The Mysterians", both Japanese scifi in color ?
@@Charlesputnam-bn9zy Thanks for the head's up about "Gorath", which I'd not heard of before. "The Mysterians" seems familiar, but maybe that's just some sort of cultural osmosis thing.
The alien imitating a celebrity was a plot device later used by the movie Critters (1986).
As well as *The Man Who Fell to Earth*
1:02
I've seen those circling rings in jewelry stores glass showcases.
Wow. Official science advisor. Cool.
9:23 nice Questar pocket telescope, Doctor !
I'm amazed that a starfish-shaped alien can move around in a human body so easily so quickly.
I seem to remember SLIME PEOPKW from season 1 of.MST3k were able to imprison a city in a fog-like force field, but invaded using spears 🤨
I've been going over Tohi's film library in the past year, and it seems a lot of scifi and/or mo ster fms involving invasions from scientifically advanced civilizations involve trying to steal some gizmo that humans have invented that somehow they totally failed to.
What a couple of great men, your Dad and you! I liked this channel EVEN MORE
Thanks dark corners with the review
The "Science Advisor" is awesome.
Nice to know dad is still the voice of reason 👍 👍
Nah, this one time Dark Corners dad is wrong. There actually WAS another earth on the far side of the sun. It was discovered in the 60s. Roy Thinnes even went there...
Unfortunately, he came back.
Briefly.
I just love the science advisor!
3:51 Don't be alarmed but there's a strong possibility of the Phantom Zone villains returning.
That jumped out at me too! I wonder if someone on the production team for “Superman: The Movie” saw this, or if it’s just coincidence.
Coolest dad, ever! 😊
"They've been sitting in orbit for a month?!" Yes, with their fingers up their starfish.
The 'Star people become Human / clayface transmog / imitating a popstar' scene was straight-up Critters (1986) 🤯 - I wonder if this was where they got the idea?
Your dad is so cool! More of him please.
we need more science advisor!
I love this channel.
It was fun.
Reminds me of the 1969 film Doppelganger, released in the US as Journey to the Far Side of the Sun. Like this film, there is a hidden planet on the other side of the sun, but this world is a mirror Earth.
Thumbnail creature reminded me of Decarabia from the Shin Megami Tensei franchise!
I enjoyed this one a lot as a kid. Rewatching it for the first time as an adult... good lord. For all the reasons detailed in this review.
"I was happy... floating... staring at Dark Corners Reviews..."
🎶"Knock, knock, knocking on Kamura's doooooooor" 🎶
Sherlock Holmes, talking about Robin's Dad, "Is he not the celebrated author of The Dynamics of an Asteroid, a book which ascends to such rarefied heights of pure mathematics that it is said that there was no man in the scientific press capable of criticizing it?"
I started to watch this on a 4 movie, dvd wow,
Wonderful Stuff. A Great Review, of an hilariously quirky Movie. Could this Film have been the inspiration for Gerry Anderson's "Journey To The Far Side of The Sun" (aka Doppelganger)?... Er, nope. I doubt it.
British SF cinema that's definitely worth watching. I haven't seen it in quite a while, but I clearly remember it as being quite excellent. Brits always made the best SF movies back in the Fifties & Sixties, especially when compared to a lot of the idiotic junk that American studios were crapping out.
@@ashleys9397 Well said.
Blessings ! Dark corners and Father.on Holy weekend T
It's a must watch for me 😄 great review 👍 love these longer reviews
Science Advisor! Knows all.
One of my favorite movies, despite your trashing it.
Oh hell yeah, one of my favorites!!!🙏👌👻❣️
"Welcome, #1". Well, better #1 than #2, I guess...
The Lady Emissary from 'The Astonishing She-Monster'! An advanced Alien League... & it can't even produce acid-proof clothing!
The science advisor kinda rocks.
The show is so funny, and I love your dad
Thumbs up for the video... and for your shirt ☺️
Why ask your science advisor if you dismiss his findings? Oh, wait a minute. That is the basis of every 1950's science fiction movie!
So good to see your father! Does he have a fascination with ancient throwing machines? And you really had him plug sponsoring the channel, which he didn't agree to?!? Good reason to sponsor though...
This is not really bad overall. What is impressive is that this was shot in color.
Very cool
That dubbed alien voice sounds exactly like the robot in Lost In Space..
When you have good a sci-fi effect.. you stick to it.. just ask that one optical lightning effect from the 80's... ;)
It has a serious early Dr.Who vibe.
To be fair to Plan 9, they has tried 8 better plans first.
Have this movie in several box sets of old sci-fi movies, tried watching it once and just couldn't finish it.
Your Dad is a good sport.
Great review on a fun film, with your scientific advisor as a bonus, love him. Now, about that shadow privilege, I would still love to see you talk about a Santo movie, there are 52 of them... My pick would be Santo vs the Monsters, available on UA-cam. Saw it way back then in a midnight screening at Fantasia fest in Montreal, crazy crazy fun !
My pick would be Santo and Dracula's Treasure. Santo, just out of the blue, invents a time machine and decides to fuck with Dracula. Movies like that is why I hung out in video stores in the 1990's.
@@stevengabbard930 My second best !
Starro went on to form the alternative band The Residents.
