    I have the best results when the cylinder is in a heated room, or had a heat lamp on it just before recording. If you wait about 5 minutes after recording before you play it back, it lets the grooves "cure" a bit. Your recdording came out much better than most I have heard, good work

      Repent and trust in Jesus. He's the only way. We deserve Hell because we've sinned. Lied, lusted stolen, etc. But God sent his son to die on the cross and rise out of the grave. We can receive forgiveness from Jesus. Repent and put your trust in him.

    I notice that the blank appears to be of black wax, as used commercially from about 1902 onwards. There are those who say that this material is too hard and will quickly wear out the sapphire cutting-stylus; most modern blanks (there are still two or three people who make them, I believe) follow the softer brown-wax formula as used in the 1890s. Also, it is often said that the ambient temperature during recording should be about 80° F (26.5° C) or alternatively that the cylinder should be warmed immediately before recording; some people do this by running the blank on the machine with an old-fashioned incandescent bulb positioned closely over it, others heat it with an electric hair-dryer, while I have found good results from using a microwave (four bursts of 25 seconds each, turning the cylinder end-over-end between each burst and the next). However, perhaps this heating is not necessary when one is talking or singing directly into the mouth of the horn or speaking-tube. Certainly this recording is very distinct throughout, even when the voice is at normal level. The point about ensuring that the recorder weight has some free play is vitally important and I have not seen it brought out so clearly anywhere else.

      The cylinder is actually dark, brown wax, that they used as a dictation cylinder. For a very short time, Thomas Edison made 4 inch long dictation cylinders which are superb recording cylinders. They are not hard wax like the black wax records.

      @@ThomasAlva Thank you! That accounts for the dark colour.

      Any kind of record player/gramophone/phonograph needle can be jimmy rigged to work as long as it’s an older one I think.

    Where can I find the recording bit? I have the reproducer but I can seem to find a recording piece anywhere. Are there no modern after market suppliers out there?

      Repent and trust in Jesus. He's the only way to Heaven. We've all sinned and deserve Hell. Sins like lying, lusting, etc. Repent and trust only in Jesus, and you will be saved! You can be saved because he took the punishment for our sins on himself when he died on the cross, just like someone can pay your speeding fine in court, and you get off free.

    Does the rubber coupler have any significance or is it simply the means by which you are able to couple the horn? In other words, does it do something acoustically in some way? Your setup sounded very sensitive and the surface noise was very minimal - quite impressive! Did you heat the cylinder before attempting the recording or was it simple ay room temperature - say 20 deg C? Cheers.

    • @ThomasAlva
      @ThomasAlva  6 місяців тому

      The rubber coupling keeps things air-tight, but I try to get the horn and adapter CLOSE together, so that sound energy isn’t wasted vibrating the rubber, because the loss in volume is VERY significant, even from a small gap! I usually do not heat the cylinders, but the newer ones I heat to 85degrees with a 60 watt light bulb.

    Awesome demonstration! I have a recorder with an intact sapphire, a brown wax blank, but when I record (using a regular horn), the playback is significantly muffled. Any advice on how I can improve this? Or scat I can check/alter? I'm trying to use this to make a recording with my history class, would love a better result before e try it.

      idk much about this tech but just judging on what he did a bigger horn could have better sound, and speaking loudly. I want to make one of these lol

      I have a blank or two that i can spare, they are newly made. As far as a recorder, I don’t have one available….I keep 3 for all of my recording projects. But in the future I might have one. My direct email is restorationarts@gmail.com

    When I drop my recorder, the cutter is still about 1/8" off of the blank. Do you know what I'm dong wrong? I'm completely new to this. Please help.

    • @ThomasAlva
      @ThomasAlva  Рік тому +2

      It’s possible that your recorder is incorrect or that the record has been shaved too much, or that your recorder cutter assembly is badly adjusted. Send pics of it to restorationarts@gmail.com
