The Flow of Charge and Electric Current | Arbor Scientific

Within a circuit, charge flows from a higher to lower electric potential. When you divide the total electric potential energy by the electric charge, we get a ratio called the electric potential. Electric potential plays a similar role as water pressure. A difference in electric potential can result in the flow of charge, such as the charge carried by electrons.
