Definitely. Earlier this year, I injured my right wrist from lifting weights, and it made me realize how even the smallest of injuries could leave you begging and crying for relief. I would literally wake up from a sharp and extremely sensitive pain every night for about two weeks. It hurt so badly that I cried almost every night from my wrist tendinitis. 😢 I'll never take for granted being able to open jars, sleep without waking up without enormous pain, or even holding a cup.
Amen Amen Amen! That just came to my mind! Father please heal Brendon from the top of his head to the soles of his feet. I ask for your grace and mercy to refuse his spinal cord and reverse all of the nerve damage and everything that occurred. Please reverse everything that caused this injury in Jesusʻ name because I know that nothing, no-thing is impossible with You!! I praise and thank you in Jesus precious, powerful, Holy Name! Amen.

Wow. I was at Waikiki Beach this past June and a wave hit me and tore a ligament on my leg. This was on second day of our vacation and boy, did I feel sorry for myself. Watching this makes me feel ashamed of how upset I was. This young man is so emotionally strong. I hope one day he writes a book about how he became so emotionally strong.❤❤
Used to be a surf dog and never have heard of this. When they describe how the injury took place and arching the back, that is not how he should have been instructed to pop up. You literally push up and snap to your feet quickly, dynamically with your whole body and core engaged with minimal arching of the back. It is sad that a miscommunication or poor instruction might have caused this and that better instruction might have prevented this from happening.
As someone who used to be a surf cat when I trained people how to surf yes we teach push with hands, keep chest high and snap up but you’re not used to the motion plenty of my students did the ol’ low back compensation when standing up, just wild this lead to paralysis for this dude.
I've surfed 40 years and lifting your chest before popping up is the best way. You must not have been much of a surfer if you think a freak accident like this is something to worry about. He could have done the same in yoga.
😲 Scary, never heard of surfer's myelopathy before. Mahalo for the report! And Brandon has excellent positive attitude. Even without the use of his legs, no doubt he will go far!
Brandon, We are all so proud of you!!!! Hang in there, stay positive and look forward; you will achieve ever more greatness and make this world a better place!!
That’s what I was thinking, I really hope he continues physically therapy and keeps trying to walk. Amazing things can happen, I had a friend who was shot in the back four times and he was paralyzed for a time… but he continued trying to walk, and he succeeded, eventually he could walk with a cane and then without one, with only a limp to show he had ever been paralyzed! My grandfather was also shot in WW2 and he was told by doctors he’d never walk again, but he also beat those odds.
This scares me as I did the same thing when I did the same thing 20 years ago learning how to surf with other novice. I popped my torso up and had a weird sensation in my legs where luckily I just washed up on the beach and my friends stood around me trying to figure out what was happening. Thankfully it subsided and never knew what happened. Haven’t done much surfing after the incident, but this helps understand maybe what I experienced and to also get a real instructor on proper technique.

What a good person and wishing him a happy and prosperous future! He reminds me of my sister, who suffered a major stroke. She is also a very positive person, and didn't stay down for long.
I suffered a full laceration of a foot tendon after a knife dropped from the kitchen countertop and cut me. Super random freak accident in the middle of a 4th of July BBQ that I was hosting. I was barefoot inside my house and everything was fine. I was reminded not to take ANYTHING for granted... not even being bored in my house while I'm fully healthy. I used to complaint that I wanted a Veloster/Kona N as a second car. Is the only thing I can think of... now i cant even drive for another month or so. Amazing how life just turns on you in a blink of an eye.
70 cases? Wow. A classmate of mine, in high school, was also paralyzed by it. Also, he suffered it during a group surfing class. This was in the 90s. And this is the reason that I’ve always been afraid to try and surf, although I’ve lived close to the ocean most of my life.
I've heard of a few of these - all were novice surfers and towards the end of their day in the water. This is one of those 'really unfair' life events.
Surfer for 20 years. This is one of the strangest things I've heard. The spine is incredibly resilient, look at all the contorsions yogi's do. It's kind of unbelievable to hear you can damage it just from doing a half scorpion and not in a stressful way.
Wow been surfing over 30 years and never heard of this. Heard of plenty of injuries wiping out, landing on board or fin. My buddy almost broke his back landing on his board years ago and had to go straight to hospital. I’ve had a few minor injuries myself. Never heard of one just from popping up though. I imagine surfers who have strengthened their backs and technique don’t have this issue. Would be curious to hear if anyone other than a beginner has experienced this. Wish him the best, he has a great spirit about him.
I had a similar injury to this but it was from overworking and stress. When you are stressed, your muscles get tight. All I did was get up out of my chair and stretched, heard a loud pop and bam my whole upper body was paralyzed for about an hour.
When i 1st heard "myelopathy" from a friend a few months ago, i found it has surged 1100% since covid. So, it was rare b4 covid, not RARE now. A friend in his 50 s decided to try surfing ended up snapping his neck and is a recovering quadratic. Slow and very long road ahead of him just to brush his teeth.
I remember reading about a young person who was using one of those water slides you put on your lawn. I think it was a slip and slide. He was paralyzed because his back kind of flexed when he landed to start his slide.

Who could have imagined. Normally its a neck or back injury from impact on the ocean bottom. I wonder if this has ever happened to people while doing burpees during training. Same movement.
To your point about burpees I would add yoga, gymnastics, wrestling etc. it had to be a pre existing condition that surfing brought out otherwise to your point this would be happening all the time to people. You can do acquire this type of injury doing an array of different tasks, not just surfing. Don't feel like you'll have this happen if you ever try surfing. But he was already relatively young & athletic. I’d expect this from someone who went from couch -to-board, and/or someone who was much older.
Most likely he jammed his back up playing soccer and then he tried surfing and that movement was not a good one.
It could be from prior injuries, either from soccer or from a hard wipeout, this leads to susceptibility
