Lonely Gimmick proudly presents an all new take on the classic song "All Along the Watchtower".
Combining the soft folk acoustic style of Bob Dylan's original with LG's signature indie-funk groove. LG makes a version of this classic that feels more soulful than Dylan's yet more chaotic than Hendrix's.
It pulls the listener immediately in with a Yamaha Rhodes piano solo. This is first song by the artist where a piano is in the forefront and an original 1970s Rhodes no less. If "Grumpy Days" paraded LG's guitar playing skills "All Along the Watchtower" exhibits their keyboard skills. The Rhodes is used in a imaginative way throughout the song accompanying the bass's steady pulse. Meanwhile playful and funky guitar lines dance around this creation of pulse at times hinting of early 90s heavy hitters "Pixies". If "Pixies" or "Sonic Youth" covered "All Along the Watchtower" its not hard to imagine it would have sounded like this. This makes it clear LG is a 90s child with their rock influences on full display throughout this sonic landscape. The guitar work draws parallels to their previous single "Grumpy Days" but still manages to tread new ground and build on top of their established sound. Exhibiting that LG is not a fan of repeating themselves.
In order for Max (aka Lonely Gimmick) to create this expressive take they have recruited two members of the now disbanded band "The Stumble and Shake".
Ex-Drummer "Amar Singh" lays down the foundation creating a thriving heartbeat that carries the groove of the song forward while simultaneously cradling the tune with delicacy. Nothing too fancy but everything in the right place.
Hannah's vocals sit perfectly in the mix and add a soulful spice to the driving bass and drums. The lyrics are different from both Hendrix's and Dylan's version. This is because the lyrics were edited using the same method Hendrix took. Remembering what they could from memory rather than actually looking them up. This and the fact the song is actually a semitone up in key makes it almost feel like an original composition.
Overall this take on a classic standard has a vintage feel while simultaneously updating the song and carrying it into the future. This isn't the first cover of "All Along the Watchtower" and its sure not to be the last. Fans of the Dylan's original, Hendrix's cover and lovers of grunge, indie, or folk are sure to find some ear candy with this track. One things for certain is it hits harder than my Dad after a couple of cans of Stella!

Lonely Gimmick is the alter ego of Max Pow, an anonymous multi-instrumentalist musical artist, although both these names are pseudonyms to hide the artist's real identity. Lonely Gimmick blends diverse genres from Hip-Hop to Techno, Lofi to Indie into a unique sound scape. Their work is self-recorded and produced, with the vast majority of the instruments featured on each track played by the artist. LG has been building up a following online since 2020 releasing singles such as "Blue Ticked Influencer" and "Grumpy Days". All the while winning praise from online music press outlets such as American Pancake, Iggy Magazine and featuring on BBC introducing.

It appears, that you have sort of combined the nostalgic feeling I get from listening to old songs from the 60´s (like AATW), a time I never experienced myself, with my nostalgic feelings towards a time I indeed experienced myself, namely the 90´s ( something in the sounds you choose to work with). I guess, that´s what I meant with "overall vibe" in my original comment. And I really like the way you (re)arranged the guitar parts and used the organ. Well done!

I did this a few years ago now when I was at music uni for a school assignment. It's been sitting on my laptop for ages. Felt I should put it out.

It's a song I hold dear to me since I was 12 years old and started learning guitar. I actually did this as a uni project for my music course about 4 years ago. It's just been sitting on my laptop for years so I thought I should put it out. This song can be taken in so many ways. I might have to do another cover version of it at some point with my own vocals. I did produce the vocals with the amazing Hannah. Literally recorded it in my bedroom. Also it's not uncommon these days to see people filming things in the street. London is funny. Sometimes you see groups of young kids grime/drill rap artists with a group of their friends filming rap videos. Looks really silly when you are watching them. I'm sure the finished video looks quite hard though.

Anyway... it's weird to listen to. Seems like there's a fair bit of effort in everything else, nice production... vocalist just seems lazy.
Like there's just a large portion of the vocal melody getting repeated, all the nice turns are replaced by repeitions of the previous phrase or line... like "for the hour is getting late"...
just flat and uninteresting. Seems like the lads who used the "learn the song" technique did very well though, good luck to your band.

Respectable use of the beats in my opinion for recreation
The beat was created by the drummer Amar Singh and recorded by me in a studio at our music university. He played along to the guitar and bass I had already recorded. We did listen to a lot of Fleetwood Mac at the time now that you mention it lol. We used to live together so I have found memoires of chilling out with a rotation of great music coming from the portable speakers in our flat. Also I did use "Dreams" as a reference track during the mixing and mastering process to try to get that nice bass sound the song's production has. Completely forgot that until you mentioned it. You have good ears. I meant to put that in the songs description. Means a lot to me my music connects with you. I have many more tunes coming soon. This is a great cover, but the way you guys promote is pretty annoying. It irks me to see comments on a popular music video and notice that every single comment is the same copied and pasted sentence. I swear there are less desperate ways of promoting. It would really help people actually enjoy the song rather than feel like it’s being force-fed to them.
Thanks for the kind words. Means a lot to me you enjoyed my cover. If it wasn't for the way we promote you wouldn't be here. I find comment marketing works a lot better than paid for promotion. Video ads before a video just annoy people. I know I never check any of them out. Also I don't have much money to spend on promotion. I find it hard enough to spend money on just my music equipment. All music and every product in this world is force fed to us. We are just not in the right circles or right social class to be on the inside track. If we didn't promote we would be buried by the algorithm and you would probably have another Billie Eilish or Taylor Swift video in its place (Nothing against them or their music). Ask yourself why do you know the brand coca cola, why do you know who Will Smith's daughter is? Why do you know who Taylor Swift is or Billie Eilish is? Unfortunately we do because they have huge marketing teams behind them. Lonely Gimmick does not so we gotta go a bit more gorilla war tactics working class way. Hopefully with enough work eventually we can build it up so we don't get buried by the algorithm and UA-cam and Spotify and all the other streaming platforms will start suggesting our music to people who will enjoy it. Although I'm sure the record labels won't be happy as we are independent. They would rather the music they own be promoted.
@@lonelygimmick Billie Eilish popped up without a marketing team when she was 16, not that long ago. Everyone know who she is now because of her talent and musical reach. No need to talk other artists down on your search for listeners. Good cover, tho!
@@bathmanofficial I didn't talk anyone down. I said nothing against them or their music. She does have a marketing team now. I didn't hear about her until she became famous and she was everywhere. I studied music and music business at university. Trust me the amount of paid for marketing that goes behind these artists is crazy. PR teams and all sorts. I wish I had them myself. @@bathmanofficial p.s I like the song "Shake it off" by Taylor Swift and from what I've heard of Billie Eilish's music its pretty good. I watched a live performance she did. Great performer. Not exactly the music I listen to but still good. I'm sure a lot of people would say better than Lonely Gimmick.
God why do people do this. It's an alright arrangement cover with a totally unremarkable female voice to soil it. Sing it yourself or leave it as an instrumental.
