I just got the Squier Contemporary Jaguar a couple weeks ago, and it has immediately become my #1 guitar, even above my Fender. Squier is making incredible instruments.
@@claudiajay8291 I don't have the fender to compare it to, but the pickups in my Squier are some of the best humbuckers I've heard. Absolutely no complaints.
Yes squier quality has become very good there upper shelf guitars with a few minor upgrades are definitely gig worthy( CV.Paranormal.Contemporary.etc) so please do some more deep dive on Squier and the new Harmony guitars maybe let us know how good the new Guilds are. Also a thing about the Squiers is i like there frets better then most fenders these days (tall narrow).
Thanks Phil, love the tones and the finish on this Jag, although I was expecting this to sound more agressive than it does. YES please on the Squier Contemporary.
I liked the variety of sounds it produces. There's a kind of precision in the tones that I like a lot. I'm not a fan of the Treble Bleed either. I think the guitar was a good purchase, and it looks cool as well. Congrats. 😎
That's what I was saying in my comment. Would love to see the comparisons on the others as well. I love modding. I have a small home run mod, custom build and repair business I have started up. Build many, many guitars and to many deep mods to count.
Yes, I love Squiers! Please deep dive on the contemporary. I have 2 Fender Blacktop Jaguars, one with P90’s and the other with humbuckers. Looking into the Squier.
Yes Phill,I think a Squire version deep dive would be really interesting to see the comparisons in the higher end versions of this guitar. some may not be able to afford the higher end versions but may be able to upgrade and mod out the Squire, if its worth doing.
Thanks as always Phil for your videos. But when you was switching you know through all the different models then and combinations like to humbuck this bridge humbucker rhythm single you know etc I didn't notice anything dramatic either. And it's funny because it's exactly what I was thinking and then a second later you came out with the same well you verified my my thoughts cuz you know I'm listening I'm not listening to a height you know high fidelity stereo and I'm not listening to headphones but yeah didn't notice much of a difference in between the different combinations sincerely Bob the blind guitarist send
I would be very interested in a deep dive into the Squier Contemporary. I have one in the “SkyBurst” color. I really like it but had to switch the pickups almost immediately (went with Duncan Saturday Night Specials for the first time). Seems like every Squier gets a quick pickup swap. Great video, as always, Phil!
I don’t agree. I have one in shoreline gold. I don’t see any ‘need’ to change the pick ups as you say you ‘had’ to. There’s no doubt the more you spend on pickups the better they will be and more expensive pickups will have more clarity and give an entirely different character to the guitar. So I get you might have decided to do that - but for anyone reading this and interested in the Squier Contemporary Jaguar it’s not ‘necessary’ to change the pickups.
@@davidharding200 Well, I did feel the need to replace them as I felt they were muddy and uninspiring. The only reason I bought the guitar was that I loved the finish and knew I could make it sound much better with only some minor changes. If I were blindfolded and played it, I doubt I would have bought it.
@@alanpettibone ok well each to their own. It is muddy compared to the pickups of my MIM Vintera Jaguar. But until I had that I found it really, really good. I still enjoy it enormously. But no doubt a spend on better pickups would improve the guitar.
Wow! I’m excited to see so many comments about the Squier Contemporary. I have one (it’s one of 3 Jags I have) and it is a fantastic guitar. Build quality is first class. The flexibility with the coil splits gives an enormous number of combinations. I bought 19 new guitars in the past year (true - a healthy means of working through trauma in my life) - Epiphones, Squiers, Gretschs mostly and a MIM Fender Jag. The Squier contemporary is in my top 3 amongst that group. It was my entry into Jaguars and I’ve since bought another two (a MIM Vintera and a Squier 70s). They’re all great. The Squier Contemporary are selling for ridiculously low prices (about $650 in Australia which is about one third of the price of the MIM Vintera. I’m tempted to get another and do a mashup with the another Squier Jag keeping some of the traditional Jag features like the tremolo and pairing it with the hunbuckers and circuitry of the contemporary.
your the best phil... iv been doing alot of my own guitar work and after doing both my guitars and two basses i got em perfect and after posting it to my buddies on snapchat i had a cpl different ones say it inspired em to get off the couch and go play theirs and i sent em your way to check ya out... thanks for all ya do, keeping me and others inspired!!!... im completely poor but if i ever have money to give to a channel you will be the first my friend... wish ya the best, you deserve it!!!
Definitely seems to be a very sleek modern instrument. I'd personally prefer something that at least stuck to jaguar style pickups and scale length though. At the price point, you're well on your way towards the likes of Tom Anderson, LSL, Luxxtone, or Suhr for a retro-modern F-style guitar.
I don't know how many came to Britain? But I bought one, and I love it. I used it for some recording, andd it was fantastic. I used mainly the neck pickup, as I was playing ambient music, but it can really rock out if I want it to. M
Hey Phil, you know what we say on this channel… If someone asks if they should buy a guitar, the answer is always yes. Go for it on the Squier, it would be very interesting to compare and contrast with this one. Great review of this rarest of birds - a “different” Fender. And I think this is the first time I watch a YT video of someone handling a Texas Tea colored instrument that doesn’t look black on camera. You could really see the different hues and gold tinted reflections - very cool. Keep up the great work!
Great demo Phil, very thorough. I liked the sounds with gain, less so the cleans. I agree it's not a Jaguar but still a cool guitar. I've a Squier VM Jaguar with mods (Fender vintage 65 pu's, tremolo, Staytrem Bridge & arm, Tusq nut) & it's a complete joy. I always wondered why Fender still haven't nailed the Jaguar. They have micro tilt necks Custom Shop bridges (the best Jag/Jazzmaster bridge going) & various phase & switching options - but they've not pulled them all together. I wonder what developments Leo would've incorporated today?
Would like to see you check out the Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster. Tried one in store for a minute and was really impressed by the fretwork with “jumbo frets” they were near perfect stock, especially compared to the CV’s scratchy frets. From what I understand the pickups are wound hotter almost like a P90.
Bought one of these a few months ago. I’d been waiting for Fender to come out with a long scale Jaguar. It’s a very comfortable guitar to play and I love the pickups for playing rock. Btw, pretty sure those are coil taps, not splits. The Fender specs call them taps also.
I would say that Fender has produced another masterful array of tones in this offering.. i pray this stays in the somewhat attainable price range..i am so glad Phil used the right equipment to intro the sound of this Jag.. this is definately new must have tones and this guitar is a beauty. Winner, yes.
Definitely a deep dive on the contemporary Squier Jag, I'm thinking of getting the gold one, or a contemp Tele, they both are amazing spec for the money.
Thanks for the review, Phil. On the matter of the Squier Contemporary Jag, yes, I'd be keen to see a review of it, not least as I got that very guitar in Shoreline Gold a few months back. It's simplified but retains the look.
I like a lot of the specs of this guitar. The neck looks really nice and the pickups sounded awesome: really smooth on the neck, nice and pucnhy with the bridge. Interesting about the vol control drop-off. Ultimately it's a little weird, as many have noted, for Fender to have celebrated 60 years of the Jag by putting out something that is quite categorically not a jag. It's clearly a quality instrument and I think the price is fair but it's a bit of a mystery as to who it was primarily aimed at. Good video.
I tried one and REALLY wanted to like it but it didn’t sound much different from my coil splitting HH strat….but cost significantly more. I love the look, especially Texas Tea and the ebony board, but tonally it didn’t offer anything different from any other HH 25.5 inch Fender. Wish they kept the 24 inch scale or kept some of the cool circuitry of the traditional jag to make it a little more unique. If you need an HH 25.5 inch Fender or don’t already have one, I think this is an awesome guitar.
You should compare a Pro-mod series MIM Charvel to an American Fender... different specs and yeah the Charvels are made to shred but you'd be surprised at their build quality, unless they drastically changed since I bought my pro-mod Tele in 2020.
Would love to see you do a review of the Squier Contemporary Jaguar. I bought a Squier Contemporary HSS Strat after watching your video with Rod Thorn. I thought that was a lot of value.
Enjoyed the review, very thorough and informative. Fender Jags are my main guitars, like you said this looks like a Jag but that's it. I prefer vintage specs (I have a MIJ and MIM both with vintage specs), and as modern as I'll go on a Jag are my MIM Player Jag and my Marr Jag - both of which get classic Jag sounds with extras. Too bad the Mod Shop is lacking in options for the Jags compared to other models. Hoping Fender adds more options for Jags in the Mod Shop. Now the 60th Anniversary in red or blue with traditional specs are sweet, but not enough difference to what I already have.
Great looking guitar, but to be honest the Tele's with the Texas Tea finish look better to me. I think the combination of the flatter surfaces of a Tele than a Strat or a Jag, And the Tele had binding that makes the finish pop a little more.
Phillip- Love your channel. There are a lot of inexpensive guitars out now. Are there any that you consider a "pro" level guitar ( which I would define as one you would regularly gig with)? I would be especially interested in short scale models that would be good for "60's rock. Thanks!
Got mine yesterday. I’d check if you had your gate engaged, my ultra luxe Jag’s volume works from 0-10 smooth taper. If my gate is on it falls of about 6 like here, I’m really loving the pickups! Just wish I did not have to work this week so I can actually play it. 😢😂 Pretty sure yours is a dud, the difference between my split/hum is quite dramatic. Not like it is here. I am in love with offsets now. Was looking at the squire 40th vintage Jazzmaster to compliment this.
The video title is definitely a clickbait, but very good video whatsoever, thanks ! (I own this guitar and was afraid it has a big con I did not know, finally not !)
Really love to see manufacturers calling a split coil a coil tap, that will never cease to wind me up. Also to add to your comment on the fender pcb treble bleed, they're crap. Treble bleeds are not hard to get right, but fender uses a super aggressive one which kills the pot sweep. ( I think it's due to them strictly using a parallel resistor rather than a series one also? could be wrong it's been a bit since I wired a bleed haha)
Treble bleeds suck anyway, it’s nice to be able to smooth out your tone slightly by rolling the volume back. Only time they make any sense are with really really muddy humbuckers but I wouldn’t put any variant of the fender or squire wide ranges in that camp.
@@Jonathan_Doe_ because of the way an in ‘bled’ volume pot will remove the highs quicker than the lows I find them to be a must have, but a bad treble bleed is worse than nothing imo also. If you get the value just right you have the full sweep of the pot and turning down the volume removes highs and lows evenly.
You seemed a little disappointed with it but it is a sleeper for rock. The one riff that you were playing sounded a bit like some Black Sabbath. The coil splitting sounds great on the pickups and opens up tons of possibilities for different types of music. You got some good Strat tones from that guitar when you did it. Many times the single coil option with coil splits sounds flat off of humbuckers to me but not on these pickups. I am a little surprised that they did not put a Tremolo on it.
Thanks Phil! Great review! It looks great, but I didn't hear anything I could use. Maybe with a new pickguard and a couple pearly gates pups. Other than that, wall art. Seeing how the Squire compared would be interesting. But honestly, a strat to strat, or tele to tele would be more useful. I think you have to be a different cat for that guitar. Maybe a jazz cat that plays all the notes and chords we don't use/play?!? LOL 8) Peace --gary
