    Awesome video! Really great to see all the inner workings of the STI 6-speed. I appreciate the time you took to show all the sneaky bits to watch out for during the disassembly, springs, washers, shims, etc. Like the advice about using an impact screwdriver on those easy to round-over bolts, great info to have before starting. I'll be saving this video as reference for when I get around to tearing into my parts gearboxes to see what is needed to refurbish them.

    Is this for wrx or an Sti and what year

      Hi mate, this is for a 2001 to 2006 year gearbox but they remain very similar throughout the years following this minus an oil pump and speedo gear amongst a few other bits mainly

    Is there anything that can be done about the smell of gear oil? does the smell go away in the room after a few days?

  • @RobHTech
    @RobHTech 24 дні тому

    IDK, for the cost of the new gears, oil, and everything plus your labor, I'd just get another used one or an STI 6 speed and just put it in the car. Otherwise, it's probably worth just paying a professional to do the job and just buy whatever gears and synchros you want.

      @@RobHTech Hi mate, paying someone to do the job was out of the question as they couldn’t turn the car around in the timeframes I often required. Also everytime I paid ‘professionals’ here in the uk, I’d get sub par standards of work and have to undo and redo their work anyway.
      This is an sti transmission from a spec c for reference aswel. The parts are nearly impossible to purchase now. If you have a look through my channel you’ll see how many of these I’ve done throughout the seasons.
      Final note, here in the uk, 95% of the used gearboxes are worn out and need pulling apart for synchros etc anyway and also they’re £3000 gbp a piece used. What I should have done looking back is fit an xshift or similar upgraded gearset

    hi mate. do you know if subaru sells the oil gear on the vcd input side behind the big circlip separately? I would like a spare to put on my RWD centre diff spool so I dont have to keep pressing/2 arm puller it off every time I swap centre diffs. I cannot find it as a separate part number on any fiche

    • @5501pickopicko
      @5501pickopicko  Рік тому

      Hiya mate, I don’t think they will like, bet bet would be to probably buy another viscous diff and steal it off that, how come your rwd converted vcd doesn’t retain the gear is came with or is it an aftermarket item?

  • @ethereous
    @ethereous 2 роки тому

    Sam, got a question for you. Without using the special clamps/gear holder for the gear stacks, what do you use for disassembling the gear stacks? I'm thinking of a differential puller or bearing puller instead of using a press. Thoughts? Thanks man.

      Hiya mate, so as far as removing the nuts on the ends of the gearsets, a good snap on or Milwaukee impact gun makes light work of this.
      Regarding removal or pulling of the gears, I tried a couple of different gear pullers and they snapped and failed to remove the components, I guess with heat it may be possible but then at the same time, heat will be detrimental to the gears I dare say. Those cheap £60 presses are all you need though, readily available on eBay

      @@5501pickopicko Hey man thanks a ton for the reply. Finally picked up that new DeWalt DCF900 as it's got rave reviews. About to go try it out.
      I did pick up some gear pullers to see how they do. I guess we'll just see. I Have a press but i just can't figure out how i'm going to press it all out. I don't know if I have the right setup for the base and all as it doesn't have enough room for the gearset to drop out. We'll have to see. Thanks man!

      @@ethereous no probs man, although I said an impact driver would do the trick in this vid, I think the hammer style handheld impact driver works, the impact driver may very well round the heads. I’ve been there several times on the tough ones and had to drill the heads off.
      As far as the press setup, I have actually done another video or two on the tear down of the gearsets using the press on my channel

    Tell me please why you prefer to go with redline heavy duty oil but not lightweight shockproof

    • @5501pickopicko
      @5501pickopicko  2 роки тому

      I’ve tried allsorts of mixes over the years and I just feel the heavyweight lasts longer before the oil overheats, or that’s how it feels when driving it. Obviously there are a lot of variables involved here

      @@5501pickopicko I'm asking because the redline doesn't recommend it for synchromesh gearboxes

      Yeah I know, it also doesn’t recommend use for oil pump driven gearboxes but for some reason it just works 🤷🏻‍♂️
