  • Loved this book! Such a creative exercise in world-building, and you can smell the Terry Pratchett goodnatured chuckly humour all over it. Almost feels like a fantasy, but the science fiction is all there, everyone! If you've read this, let me know what you thought of it in the comments. Would love to hear whether you enjoyed it.

Enjoyed your review; good vid 👍
I really enjoyed the Long Earth series; they were very thought provoking for me. The books did a very good job of world building; the long earth concept as laid out in these book is ripe for expanding upon. I'd love to see more books set within the Long Earth world; stories about the canine species for example.

It definitely seems like a prime world where others could set their short stories at least. I wonder how open the Terry Pratchett estate would be to allowing free reign?

@@MaxReads Wouldn't be any harm in asking the Terry Pratchett estate; the worse they could say is 'no'.

It’s boring for some people but my relationship with this book is crazy.
TW Brief mention of suicide/self harm:
When I was 13 I had an… obvious suicide attempt after dealing with home shit. And my mom was leaving on her trip but my aunt/god mother picked me up and took me to the mall. I was tired from the pill I took but I remember we had my favourite food court food (New York fries), and then she took me to the book store. I found the long earth and Long Mars, but couldn’t figure out which came first and which to get. She bought them both for me…
It changed my life. I passed out on her couch and read them when I got home. Now I looove concept driven sci-fi and fantasy because I like thinking. And for me, the book was a mixture of philosophy and sci-fi. And I think it literally opened a part of my brain. Or formed some neuro pathway.
I heard of astral projection a while before but I ended up waking up outside my body yo… That book first increased my chances of fully lucid dreaming. I could always do it in nightmares but it was 50/50 in normal dreams. And control got a bit shaky. I accidentally read the 2nd book first, but oh well. When I read the long earth after the long Mars, I was daily lucid dreaming. Cuz yeah obviously the story made a lot more since reading it in its purposed chronological order…. But then yeah one morning I woke up and I was looking down at my body. My right leg was bent up against the wall like how I remember it was when I fell asleep. And what I knew from astral projection and my experience with lucid dreaming, stay calm.,, so I said “doesn’t matter I’m hungry”. I just willed floated through my doorway and up the stairs almost to the entry- and then I heard a loud ass noise and got pulled backwards into my physical body as my alarm was harassing my ear drum…

Not bad review. Yes, I agree the book has many themes, you mentioned conservation. Also, will mankind repeat its mistakes given a "clean slate".
Note to Prachett fans - this series is available as audiobooks on UA-cam. Hours and hours 😀 and the narration is good.

I literally had this book on my radar for like 3 years cause I wasn't sure if I'm gonna like it (i'm not that into Terry Pratchett) and never heard anyone talk about it till now. I'm so glad you liked it, I really need to give it a try

I'm honestly stoked to continue with the series but I'm super scared it's going to have a weak "fizzle out" ending. I feel like I can smell it coming haha

I read the first 3 in the series when it first came out and I enjoyed it. I can definitely see how people think it's boring, but I totally loved the concept. I ended up not finishing the series because it felt a little repetitive at times. Great review. I'll look forward to hearing what you think about the rest of the series.

Ahhh I'm torn between hoping the next books are fresh and different, and hoping they're comfortably the same format haha!

It's odd that you say that the setting and plot doesn't feel like a Terry Pratchett story because apparently he's the one who came up with the idea and had been mulling it over for years before approaching Baxter to collaborate. But I do get what you mean though, it feels like a different author's plot and setting with Pratchettean characters, dialogue and narration.

But also this is a great review I’m super excited to see people talk about this because yes- I can definitely understand why some people get bored. But as a séries it’s phenomenal imo. The entire universe they built… I found so much in it. When I was 13-14 I coincidentally got blessed with some books that expanded my consciousness and then sent me down a path. Consciousness higher self soul third eye what have you. I’m being vague cuz shit covers so much of my life but yes! Books one and five have my heart
Critiques tho, I didn’t really like book 3, the long Mars. But the long cosmos is my favourite cuz the concepts they bring up are mind ogling.
