When I was 9 years old and tired of the violin, my parents took me to see Tuckwell perform this with the Philadelphia Orchestra. I have played and loved the horn ever since.
The first time I Heard Barry Tuckwell was in a Decca vynil with 2nd Strauss Horn concerto. In the other side he played Mozart 1. Such a great honor and pleasure!!
You have no idea how difficult this first movement is to play well, Tuckwell not only nailed it technically he also injected a great deal of feeling and pathos in to a youthful composition.
Love this, I'm playing this movement for Solo and Ensemble this year. It's a big undertaking because I've only been playing for a year and a half, but I think I can handle it. I love Barry Tuckwell's mustache.
I'm learning how to play this on french horn. I just started so it's gonna take a while but I have a pretty good grasp on it already and this helps alot! Tuckwell's amazing! :D Wish me luck playing it
He plays D with T3 because its more in tune than T12. T12 is a sharp fingering, T3 is a little flatter, and the D (concert G) is the 3rd of the E flat major chord so it needs to be flatter.
@Othello1019 I agree. I think Barry has a wonderful tone. What is a little flaw in such a wonderful performance. We all can have little mishaps while playing, no matter how good or experienced. He's the best.
well, what kind of student are we talking about? A high school player who might become professional later, are a student in middle school just getting his first horn?
@happiness1sawarmgun Not a chance. The quality of today's 8D's are crap. The Elkhart models were the best. If you can get your hand on one of those then get one. If you want something similar to a Conn get a Hoyer. They're vastly superior.
sometime, in orchestra you should play D with 3, not 12...it depends by the orchestra... and when you have a faster passage you have to play D with 3 , if not you will be late(ritmically) ... and it also depends by the F Horn what are you playing on...
I do have to agree with him slightly. The opening seemed very amateur ish and uncontrolled in my opinion. If that was the sound he was looking for (Which it probably was based on the playing in the rest of the concerto) he played it very well, but I didn't like it at all

Rest in peace, Barry Tuckwell. You were truely one of the greatest horn players of all time.

Absolutely outstanding. Im beyond impressed.

It's so wonderful!
I want to play the horn well as he play.
Historical live performance of this piece. Thanks for conserving the videotape. Please re-upload the whole concerto in one piece.
At the Houghton horn shop in Ft. Worth, Texas, we've worked on several of Tuckwell's horns. Truly an amazing player.

love that slow bit around 5:00. wish it was longer! favorite part to play along with the beginning theme.
やばいですね
タックウェル様のご登場なら是非会場へ行きたかったです…!
well said, and not only that - probably the 2nd most well known and respected behind Dennis Brain!
Barry Tuckwell is a beast
The French Horn is one of the most beautiful instruments. It looks good, it sounds, good, it even FEELS good to play... :)
I'm not sure about that last part... But okay
The NHK had an INCREDIBLE wind section at that time...........
Played this on tuba. Very fun piece
No comments....Magnifico !!!!
@iopzzza
Loudness typically comes from the horn player and not the horn.
Every person is unique and has a unique horn that he or she plays well with.
He plays D with T3 because its more in tune than T12. T12 is a sharp fingering, T3 is a little flatter, and the D (concert G) is the 3rd of the E flat major chord so it needs to be flatter.
who dislike this is a man who don`t know what means the F Horn!
Never better in any year
... and he looks like Franz Strauss
Explendido, muito bom, bela apresentação.
@Othello1019

I want a mustache like his.
mai nessuno ci arriverà !!!!!!!!
BUON GIORO MAESTRO BARRY TUCKWELL LA CONSIDERO IL MIO MIGLIORE AMICO

Ma va? Non lo sapevamo
Ecxelente
i agree
@xaustinx15 i love it!!!
Wow
this solo=lip killer im doing the first part of it for my high school recital
What? He's using the 3 rotary by itself. Such an outcast. Interesting
+ZEDecay He's using a 4 valve full double with Kruspe style wrap.
you can use instead of 1 and 2. 1 and 2 tends to be very high.
3 is more in tune, as Timothy said. It's not used as much because it's more inconvenient than 1 and 2.
@PROIMZ He's not. He was a Holton person. IIRC someone mentioned the Conn 8D.
Tuckwell himself resembles Richard Strauss___
well, what kind of student are we talking about? A high school player who might become professional later, are a student in middle school just getting his first horn?
@oratodasczardas around 2:ish I saw a third under... so I don't know if that helps you distiguish the model any better but yeah.
Then perhaps you'd suggest a better version? I'm all ears.
What kind of trumpet is that at 5:10?
a rotary valved trumpet.
It is a "rotary" trumpet. Don't know what brand.
total trumpet fail at 2:31, other than that i thought the beginning could be slightly faster....but respect to Barry Tuckwell, Great Performance!
Can some1 tell me which horn sounds most loudly ?
He might make it...
Man, I can barely hit high Gs, and Mr. Tuckwell can play high B flats like they're nothing.
@empresspasta It is haha. I know the look of the ring, which means the bell comes off. Have a model like that myself.
@Mousehhh I was being sarcastic, not that you could tell.
4:24 Zooming in on the hand in the bell... What?
That might be why he's so bright
I like playing too but its too hard :(
He has a right to dislike a particular musical interpretation... But you don't have to be a Simon Cowell lol.

most likely it's a Holton Tuckwell...
Everything the bassoon isn't, sadly...
@Othello1019 No, Stefan Dohr is the Best :)
ネ申!!!!!!!!!!
@bauerinxyz
do u think is it a wonderful tone ? :D he isn't the best :D DEAR GOD
playing this on tuba.

tuckwell is good but the orchestral interpretation is really monotone... probably the conductors fault!
Do you have any reasons for your opinion, or are you just going to state it and let everyone form their own opinions about you as a person?
the orchestra could have been better....
The French horn is boring.
Said nobody, ever.
:)

And you are?
The anti music from the very beginning
kindergardener sound ... i like tuckwell but he's plays like a woodcutter :S
is this how they play down under ?!?! geeez mannnn...talk about shifting to another gear :(( dont like it
Great horn player. Terrible musician
et votre projet humanitaire Monsieur l prof ?
