As someone mentioned grey knights do this often. A squad can link their minds together, not only for communication but for psychic sheilding and such. This also helps strenthen their bond and overall effectiveness as a team as you are quite literally allowing someone else into your mind

If you think about it, many Old One races has mucho psyker powers. Therefore prehistoric Humanity having a little (big) sliver of Psyker power makes some sense.
In my head cannon, Psykers can do pretty much anything they think about and Warp will make it happen, how complicated their action is would deter how hard it is to gather enough warp energy to actually "cast it" and...survive it. This would explain why there is such an absurd spectrum of warp abilities because there is potentially infinite number of potential abilities. Though, most psykers will stick to what works. A fireball will simply work, conjuring a fork out of thin air and shooting it with magnetic power would work too but fireball is much simpler. Causing someone to implode might be fancy and cool to see from Psyker's side of the view, but to cause an implosion of a person, the mechanics behind it to make it work is way harder than if you would simply grab a rock and launched it with telekinesis at someone's face. Or if you are in Urban enviroment, a car or a lamp post might do way more damage than imploding 1 guy and it will be easier to cast and maintain, a swinging car mopping up entire squads ? Now thats maximum damage for least effort needed. This would explain alot, it can do anything, but there are things that just works and are the cheapest and thats why everyone sticks to them and it would explain some really peculiar abilities of certain individuals. In any other setting such power over warp would be broken in every way, like only limitation on what you can do is your imagination ? But in Warhammer, being able to shapeshift in to a Hydra might be great but ur ass will most likely turn in to a warp portal if you dont splatter yourself on the pavement halfway through transformation because you tried too hard.... or that entire Imperial Guard battalion wasnt just content sitting watching you transforming and hit you with a Basilisk shell.
I saw a tiny Muy Thai fighter go up against a giant Sumo wrestler once in an MMA or freefight match. The little dude was all over the place, but once he got tired the big guy was still standing there and won the match. And in Krav Maga they do advise the women not to go toe to toe with bigger men. Size does matter in a fight. I wouldn't be so quick to write off the big body builders against the little Asian guy. If they know at least some fighting techniques that is.
Great example is James Thompson. Dude's big and wins by simply rushing his opponents. But every time he meets someone smart enough to step aside and counterpunch, he gets KO'd

I would use Omega as the highest. Even though it doesn't match the bottom to top labeling, Omega would be the "End All" of psykers. As represented by Alpha and Omega. Kind of like a psyker nuke ending all.
Omega actually is the second lowest level of psychic charge a person's soul can have, exceeded only by Omega-minus. If someone rates Omega on the Psyker scale, then they are Blanks who would be essentially immune to Warp-based energies and powers.
Is a bit funny that even a basic power like force push break bones to everyone who is not a living thank or space marine and lightinings rip apart almost everyone without plot armor or just a small fire ball can blow someone in pieces, and this is canonn lore and is possible for any psyker who can manifest something what isn't telepathy or divination.
If we are thinking of the same book Eisenhorn never fights an alpha plus without a blank. The pyskers had special collers on that hindered him and the one that got free made him kill a space marine and almost made him blow out his own brain. If not for the intervention of an alpha plus.
where does Ravenor fit on the scale? I seem to remember that some of his enemies refer to him as an alpha plus level but not really sure as he rarely shows his full power
I thuougt he saw himself as a high trained alpha. but I think the video got the scaling wrong, after alpha the scale is reverse but with a plus behind, but that could also only be part of the german lexicanum, so probably headcanon
might be I can find references of him being either alpha or alpha plus. I mean in the Bequin books he bodies a 10 000 year old thousand sons sorcerer 10 to 1 which does seem like a alpha plus level
pretty sure at least to begin with Eisenhorn is nowhere near alpha level. His abilities greatly improve later in the books but he is still far behind monsters like Ravenor who can literally fire anime level attacks like Mephiston. a specific level is not given as far as I remember, but he refers to himself as a high function psyker what ever that means.
Both Eisenhorn and Ravenor were low level at the start of their respective sagas and their abilities have increased over time. Ravenor training his mind due to his disability did accelerate it and the fact he has psionic boosters in his chair helps. But his display in Penitent is truly impressive, just don't say those 2 words... Eisenhorn was a consistent Gamma level all the way through, he definitely changed in The Magos though due his exposure to The Torment and working the loom. His eyes now shine violet, he can handle enuncia and he scares the absolute shit out of Cherubael. That in itself is no mean feat, both Eisenhorn and Ravenor are easily Alpha level, potentially higher.
I loved reading the Eisenhorn and Ravenor books back in college. Have any high quality Black Library books not part of the Horus Heresy series come out since then?
I always preferred the wizards in Fantasy to the psykers in 40k. I love both settings but I always felt Fantasy did a better job at portraying the good and bad aspects of the aethyr\warp better.
Ravenor as well is an Alpha level psyker iirc, although like any novel character his powers tend to fluctuate pretty dramatically depending on who or what he is facing. It's like when Jedi die to random regular people because they didn't just immediately crush them like a tin can with their force powers.
As far as I know, soul bind is still canon and from what we have learned from the godblight novel, the Big E soul is shattered so its technically possible for him to spare one of those shards to deal with the soulbinding thing... talk about multitasking. Great video btw.

But in other fantasy worlds, you can become one. How does it go in Warhammer 40k? Can you be made into a psyker or do you have to be born as one in order to be one?

It hasn't come up yet but he's mentioned it as a footnote in his stories. I don't know what class of psyker you would class him but he's not a good as his battle brother Ahriman. However as a seasoned Sorcerer assassin he's someone you do not want to take lightly, even if he is chained up on Terra....something tells me he's there for a reason.

Size does matter in a fight. I wouldn't be so quick to write off the big body builders against the little Asian guy. If they know at least some fighting techniques that is.

As long as both opponents know their techniques it's all about weight class, when one is way more skilled then the other weight doesn't matter anymore
Great example is James Thompson. Dude's big and wins by simply rushing his opponents. But every time he meets someone smart enough to step aside and counterpunch, he gets KO'd

I would use Omega as the highest. Even though it doesn't match the bottom to top labeling, Omega would be the "End All" of psykers. As represented by Alpha and Omega. Kind of like a psyker nuke ending all.
Omega actually is the second lowest level of psychic charge a person's soul can have, exceeded only by Omega-minus. If someone rates Omega on the Psyker scale, then they are Blanks who would be essentially immune to Warp-based energies and powers.
Too many problems in 40k can be traced back to “and then the elder”

Is a bit funny that even a basic power like force push break bones to everyone who is not a living thank or space marine and lightinings rip apart almost everyone without plot armor or just a small fire ball can blow someone in pieces, and this is canonn lore and is possible for any psyker who can manifest something what isn't telepathy or divination.

where does Ravenor fit on the scale? I seem to remember that some of his enemies refer to him as an alpha plus level but not really sure as he rarely shows his full power

but I think the video got the scaling wrong, after alpha the scale is reverse but with a plus behind, but that could also only be part of the german lexicanum, so probably headcanon
might be I can find references of him being either alpha or alpha plus. I mean in the Bequin books he bodies a 10 000 year old thousand sons sorcerer 10 to 1 which does seem like a alpha plus level
Eisenhorn and Ravenor are both Alpha/alpha+ psykers, their "school" is just considered weaker compared to lets say Mephiston.
pretty sure at least to begin with Eisenhorn is nowhere near alpha level. His abilities greatly improve later in the books but he is still far behind monsters like Ravenor who can literally fire anime level attacks like Mephiston. a specific level is not given as far as I remember, but he refers to himself as a high function psyker what ever that means.
Both Eisenhorn and Ravenor were low level at the start of their respective sagas and their abilities have increased over time.
Ravenor training his mind due to his disability did accelerate it and the fact he has psionic boosters in his chair helps. But his display in Penitent is truly impressive, just don't say those 2 words...
Eisenhorn was a consistent Gamma level all the way through, he definitely changed in The Magos though due his exposure to The Torment and working the loom. His eyes now shine violet, he can handle enuncia and he scares the absolute shit out of Cherubael. That in itself is no mean feat, both Eisenhorn and Ravenor are easily Alpha level, potentially higher.

I always preferred the wizards in Fantasy to the psykers in 40k. I love both settings but I always felt Fantasy did a better job at portraying the good and bad aspects of the aethyr\warp better.
Ravenor as well is an Alpha level psyker iirc, although like any novel character his powers tend to fluctuate pretty dramatically depending on who or what he is facing. It's like when Jedi die to random regular people because they didn't just immediately crush them like a tin can with their force powers.
You can certainly see Frank Herberts DUNE inspirations in 40K through elements like this

As far as I know, soul bind is still canon and from what we have learned from the godblight novel, the Big E soul is shattered so its technically possible for him to spare one of those shards to deal with the soulbinding thing... talk about multitasking.

But in other fantasy worlds, you can become one. How does it go in Warhammer 40k? Can you be made into a psyker or do you have to be born as one in order to be one?

Iskandar Khayon former first Captain of the Thousand Sons apparently also made Magnus bow before Abaddon at one point or another in the Black legion series. It hasn't come up yet but he's mentioned it as a footnote in his stories.
I don't know what class of psyker you would class him but he's not a good as his battle brother Ahriman. However as a seasoned Sorcerer assassin he's someone you do not want to take lightly, even if he is chained up on Terra....something tells me he's there for a reason.
Khayon is in universe a unreliable narrator, he may had lied or he tricked magnus somehow, specially since ABD commented hes still weaker than Ahriman
