  • A stage play written by Tony Roper about a group of 1950's Glasgow women washing their clothes in the public washhouse, the Steamie.
This is the TV production made for STV on Hogmanay 1988. Brilliant cast, brilliant play. My ma used to drag me to the Steamie in Govan when I was wee. Some of the auld Glesga patter just decks me!

The entire cast is stunning, but Sheila Donald as Mrs. Culfeathers is outstanding. Such a moving performance.

Just stumbled upon this. My god, the memories. Getting dragged along tae the Steamie at Finnieston St. Baths on Saturday morning wi' my Ma, way back in the 50s.
I'd shove the pram loaded wi' the washing in a big tin bath, the washing board, and a big packet o'
Daz. When we got back hame she'd gie me a tanner for sweeties. Aghh!....Sweet memories!
God bless ye Ma! Where ever you are! xx

Tony Roper is a genius!!! It's exactly the way I remember it, with all the banter and everything. When we were finished, ma wee granny would always buy me a toffee apple on the way home. I was never able to finish that toffee apple!! :)

+shelby6571 my granny would go to the steamie while my grandad took my mum and aunties and uncles to the park if it was nice and the library if it wasn't and on the way home they'd get a poke a chips and a bottle a ginger. Me and my granny still love to watch this together.

Eileen McCallum was so perfect as Dolly so glad Elaine C Smith was considered too young for the TV adaption and was replaced.

Was the Best thing on tv at Hogmanay 😀. Sent my mother etc to see it in the Kings but don't think it was great as the television show.

Stop degrading women for looking after their children . And please stop, demonising men like our fathers, we need our fathers to be stony not mixed up don't know who we are. We have let this go too long

This is based around the 1950's! Not the 20th century, so there WILL be differences in the thinking of today and of way back then! Please don't be offended as there would be no ill will in the writing. Just a retelling of what once was...and that's all!!😊
