There was a weird tonal shift from 1 to 2 that I've never really seen anyone mention. 1 used to really incentivize self-growth as a maker/player by offering goals you reach on your own, but in 2 it really expects to pit you in a competition. Everything from the gamemodes to medals tied to a leaderboard to the hard as balls achievements you can show off on your mii makes 2 feel more like a popularity contest which just isn't fun. You can even feel it in the levels. Ever wonder why there are so many "refreshing levels"? Clout Also bring back stacked pipes Nintendo
Yeah, I agree with the Mystery Mushroom being removed being a problem with the sequel, because although I technically have the first Mario Maker, I have the port that you said you don't talk about (the 3DS one).
I grew up with the 3ds version and I have so many memories with that, but alas, I have even more memories with SMM2, I was so hyped for that game and it's my most played game of all-time (by a large margin, SMM2 on 900+ hours and my second most MK8D is only at 300+ hours), I don't really have any experience with the Wii U version, except from once at a friend's house and a few times on an emulator, but the memories I have with both SMM3DS and SMM2 will make no amount of arguments surpass what these 2 games gave me
I agree, SMM2 just didn't have the same appeal for me, mainly cause the level editing wasn't nearly as intuitive. I had made 75 levels in the first game, and was so excited for 2, and I even bought an amazon stylus that could work with the Switch, but I only ended up making 3 or 4 levels because all the intuitive design had been replaced with menus to manually select everything. Wanna change a koopa's color? You can't just give it a shake, no now you have to hold down on it for a couple seconds to bring up a menu and then select the koopa's color. Genuinely SMM2 feels soulless compared to the first game. I got my mileage out of playing levels in 2, but the creating part of the game was ruined for me, it was so unappealing.
Mario Maker 2 is a better game on a worse console. Honestly, in terms of graphics and performance the Switch is better, but it lacks charm that the Wii U has and is less convenient (even with it being handheld wherever you go)
I never got to experience the "charm" of Mario Maker because I didnt have a Wii U. For me that same charm started with Mario Maker 2 so I never really understood why people loved MM1 over 2 because, like you said, 2 just seemed to have way more content but now I realize that people just feel the exact same way about MM1 that I do for MM2.
Put Sonic the Hedgehog Power-up in Super Mario Maker 2 on All Game Styles Like: 1. Super Mario Bros. 1 2. Super Mario Bros. 3 3. Super Mario World 4. New Super Mario Bros. U 5. Super Mario 3D World
Honestly i have to agree the amiibos the custom death sounds when someone falls to their death its easier to make levels and more SM2 is still great But SM1 IS SO MUCH BETTER This is a W TAKE
100% AGREED mario maker 1 clears 2 Way better tool kit, in mario maker 1 there were no limitations you could stack pipes have shells inside a spring mario maker 2 feels corporate. Mario maker 2 has more items yet less creative options
I love both of these games and, while I think Mario Maker 2 might be better in terms of content with the world maker, 3D World theme, and multiplayer, Mario Maker just fits perfectly on Wii U with the GamePad. Amiibo costumes were great too, and it was such a special moment experiencing a game like that for the first time...
I can definitely see valid reasons why someone would prefer the first over the second. For example, there was more engagement with the community with the first game, they would release their own official levels pretty frequently and this would be how most of the amiibo costumes were unlocked. Things like that really helped grow a community around the game, which is something the second game definitely feels like its lacking especially now in 2024. The gamepad also just felt way nicer to build with, the ui just worked so well. The sanitized charm in SMM2 is also another good argument to make, but there's one argument you raised that I just completely flat out disagree with. SMM2 isnt worse because it has too much content, if anything the game suffers from not having ENOUGH. The leap from 1 to two in terms of options was definitely a big leap, but it just wasnt big enough in my opinion. A lot of the features that were added were either things that should've been in the first game to begin with, or things being held back by the way they were implemented. The SMB2 gameplay is a perfect example of a good concept held back by execution, sure the game is objectively better for having it due to giving players more ways to spice up their levels, but its just being a power up instead of a full blown style really brings the whole thing down because if you want to design a level around the mario 2 mechanics, you have to constantly put the item everywhere in your level to ensure the player always has it, which just ruins the difficulty of levels in the most place. Another example that comes to mind of good concepts being held back is the fire spitting yoshis. The red yoshi is cool and all, but why just restrict the fire spitting to a specific yoshi? Wouldn't it be way cooler if they just implemented the SMW color coded ability system instead? Adding all four Koopa and Yoshi colors from SMW and have them behave the same way, would give players so many more options for their levels. There's also infuriating restrictions when it comes to what items can be used in what gamestyle *Cough* Fire Bros *Cough* Clear Pipes *Cough* The lack of options in the first game is more justifiable due to it being the first game and being on an unsuccessful system, but there really was no excuse for this game, especially if there's only one new gamestyle. Limitation does inspire creativity, but there's only so much you can draw with a stick in mud before it dries up. I don't know, maybe I'm just spoiled from SMBX and romhacks, but my biggest issue with SMM2 is that it doesn't feel as innovative as the first, but it's at least a little better than the first due to the added options. 🤷♂️
I guarantee you the reason why they removed them was due to multiplayer. It would be confusing having four players all wearing the Luigi amiibo costume, and if that's why they're removed then honestly I'm glad they were. Proper additional characters and multiplayer is a much better trade off.
Nah I like MM2 more. But I hate how they pretty much gave up on updating the game, MM1 got so many updates and had events and stuff. If MM2 got updated at least for another year or two, it would be one of the best Mario games ever made.
6:44 …what, the touch screen still works on the switch version though. Idk maybe it's more convenient in the original, I haven't actually made a level in SMM1 for a long time so maybe that's what you're talking about
You spent 10 minutes saying you prefer the first one, but everything you said just gave points to the sequel. Missing slopes on the original is honestly bad enough that it’s useless.
There's a degree of wackiness in the original game with crazy sound effects and all sorts of charm. Mario Maker 2 feels more limiting, and the 3d World theme while cool, is ugly af
Yea I get where you’re coming from, I just wanted to say it because I don’t like when people say their opinions as facts when people have that mindset they will have arguments with other people just to prove that there right
good points. makes me think of all those homebrew arcade "VS Fighters" created in MUGEN... they were great, but people's character select screens would be ridiculous... character icons the size of a pin and it took forever to find the character you wanted (Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 in the official games to me pretty much hit the limit of having a reasonably large selection that didn't make it ridiculous... because eventually you just want to have a match and not take longer to pick your characters than to have that match that is going to be under 3 minutes)
I disagree completely, we need a Mario maker 3 for the switch that has every object obstacle and entity from all the Mario games going back to new super Mario Bros DS
