Just controlling speed a little better on final pick-up would be great. You cannot pick up a 90 kg person as you pass by, like picking up the water-can one-handed in the video, and you don't really want to stop the boat by grabbing them and dragging them through the water till the boat stops. A little more emphasis on the technique of filling and spilling the mainsail on a close reach would make clear how to control speed without relying on momentum. Still, it is a good video, and thanks for responding to my reply which I intended to be picky only in a positive way! After all, nothing is perfect.

I was trying to see if there was another good MOB video and while some are good they are for motor yachts or sailboats with motors. My class uses 23' ensigns without a motor! This is the best for video for me. Again, thank you so much! I have to practice today and show I can do this Saturday! I am confident with a few practice runs I will be successful!
One of the best! Fast recovery. No time waisted taking in sails and starting engines. Having an extra crew member start the engine, leaving it in neutral, as a backup plan to aid with the final closing maneuver might be a good idea. However, the figure 8 keeps you close and gives you the ability to stall into irons at the MOB. There may be time needed to get that crew aboard.
Top notch informative video o---) When cruising always have 2 people on watch so one knows if / when the other one goes overboard. Always have everyone topside wear floatation like a Mae West and most of all, have them ALL carry a waterproof marine handheld radio attached to them with a fully charged battery because at night they can direct the boat to them vs you trying to see anything (even in the day with a good chop). At night also I have topside personal wear fanny packs with pen flares, knives, strobe lights etc... Even on a very calm sunny day I know of situations where people have gone over and died so when topside, be prepared for anything, even whales breaching on your boat, it all happens.

I have to agree that less is more in an emergency situation. Just spot, throw flotation (keep spotting always), tack main & leave headsail as is to backwind. So far you've only changed your heading. Once turned toward POB, slacken main sheet to slow steer to just up wind and creep toward POB. If you're going down wind or up, same procedure.
Great video, sound technique. Avoid a gybe at all costs. My preference is a windward side pickup because the sea helps lift the MOB but the risk is you quickly drift away. Leeward, in a big sea, you bounce the boat on their bonce! But you stay close.let us all hope we don't have to do it at night in 3 metre seas with 40 knots of wind. That is the proof of your technique!
2 People on a boat and the experienced one falls overboard. This technique doesn't work. Heavy weather, large seas, you will lose sight of the person almost immediately in the waves. Get so far away you never find them again. I wouldn't dare try this technique in heavy weather. Way too complex and needs two experienced people aboard...rare. Instead instantly heave to and stop and stay right next to them. Easy to do and very easy to train inexperienced crew.
I prefer to sheet in the main tight on the downwind leg so that I can point toward "Bob" after I turn up on the last leg without wasting time trying to sheet in the main, which by the time you do you've already lost too much speed. And without the main, you can't point. If your pattern relies of blowing all your sails and drifting up toward Bob, then it will be hit and miss.
When you do the tack how come you do not sheet in? I ask this because in heavy winds you could not hold onto the falls as shown, and if you cannot hold onto the falls your boom coming across will be very violent.
I totally love the triangle...I was out doing crew overboard with a class and after watching your video it all kind of clicked, especially the triangle...I mentioned it to the skipper and he liked that and used the triangle as well. The other day I was using COB to pick up balloons on the water... Once you get going from a beam to broad reach on the other tack it's all pretty easy from a point of sail perspective. I really do not want to have actually rescue an actual crew member as then you are in "house is on fire mode"...issues such as now how am I going to get the person back on board?...hypothermia?...why in the first place did they fall off? I sure as hell do not want to be the crew man overboard...but when I am up on the foredeck changing fore sails those thoughts do go through my head! great tutorial!
I really love what you've done here. I understand there has been some scepticism with the success of this in heave seas etc...and that may be true, however this is only one of many techniques known...more the reason for you guys to do more clips...including retrieving a life-size bob back on to deck. More importantly though, you made it enjoyable to watch, it was energetic, fun and captivating....great ingredients for learning. Look forward to you guys doing more.

What is the reasoning for backwinding the jib on this maneuver? I use that for a quick stop but normally do a full tack for the figure 8, just curious.
Hi Andrew. It helps you turn a little faster and tighter and therefore you don't have to sail as far far away to complete the tack. And in many situations when your crew goes over you don't have anyone left to operate the jib. Just leaving it makes your life simpler you can focus on the maneuver. Not a necessary step but can help...
Getting your MLB backboard is the hard part, especially if the MLB is unconscious! The key here is keep everybody on board to begin with. Man Overboard equals death!
good... but I always approach with the MOB on my windward side. I think that way you don't risk accidently filling the sails and speeding off if you have to bear away a bit to reach the MOB. Should always approach a MOB from the leeward side, that way you can head into the wind and slow down as you reach the MOB.
Call it Man Overboard. Everyone knows exactly what it is. We dont have to be politically correct when it comes to safety. Man Overboard is understood by any english speaking person. "Person Overboard" will be followed with a "whhaaaaaat" and a dumb look by many crew members. However, Great vid.

Just be able to handle your boat perfectly in any conditions.... and btw approaching someone in water from windward side in heavy weather is a bad idea. Also picking up a buoy is nothing like getting an unconscious person on board. I 💬 NK MOB drills are just basic boat handling.
Surely it depends on the free-board of the yacht and your recovery method. Leeward pick up, drifting down on a sheltered casualty, is better for a large heeling vessel.

these rescue maneuvers are incorrect. the mob should ALWAYS be to windward of the rescue craft unless you desire to crack a victim's head on the hull.

Small keelboats of this size work well with the MOB on the windward side, yachts pick up on the leeward side
