Still never understood what was wrong with the screw in cap, as far as I’m concerned it was tool less, thanks for the great explanation Steve.
Toolless opening. You can open it any time without tools. With others you can't.
I agree!
Never saw a gas cap that needed tools to remove. That's crazy!
@@robertspargal9261 Then you haven't used much chainsaws or you live at warm climate. With cold oil and gas caps can be very hard to open. For that there is slot for flat screwdriver and many times it have been the only way to open my husqvarna chansaw caps. With my stihl it never have been issue, because of thoes special caps.
My thoughts exactly. These goofy caps are another example of Germans over engineering creating a problem where none existed before
A few years back I received a letter from Stihl stating there was a recall on this cap and to see a Stihl dealer for replacement. My dealer replaced the cap at no charge and I have had no problems since. Thanks for all the tips Steve.
I got that letter, if I remember correctly the ethanol in the fuel would attack them. I remember changing out a few gas caps on John Deere mowers that the rubber seal turned to black goo.
THANKS FOR WHATEVER YOU DID AS IM STILL CONFUSED WILLWATCH AGAIN LATER !!!
An incredible solution to a non existent problem
I agree!
Stihl knows this is a problem for years and refuse to fix it. I went to husqvarna and haven’t looked back
same. ive used stihl lawn equipment daily for 20 years and never had any problem with any stihl gas cap.
Many of the backpack blowers dripped gas, due to faulty caps.
It can vary from customer to customer. Stihl makes a quality product, even so.
You know when you just Fxck with it for 50 seconds and it goes in…. My life during 5 years.
Thanks Steve
Excellent tip. They are a pain for not locking in on the chain oil caps on the shtil saws
Agreed!
Yep, the oil cap is more difficult than the gas cap on my chain saw.
I have multiple Stihl saws and trimers. Thge older units have a screw cap which has NEVER been a problem. The new hi tech, foolproof toolless design has been a constant issue, from not starting in correctly to leaking, to just vibrating out. As the comment before me notes, a solution to a problem that didn't exist. Thanks for the explanation of the cap mechanics tho. That will help. I was gonna send you a beer for that tip,, but the bottle had a hole in it and it leaked into my glass.
I have those caps on my chainsaw, sometimes it doesn’t want to lock especially on my worksites. Thanks for the tip putting the cap in the open position! That’s probably why it won’t fit and lock sometimes!
You're Welcome...
I’m going to have to make sure I do it this way now. I was always wondering why sometimes it would leak and Some times it wouldn’t leak…
Right on
I had a similar problem with the oil cap on a Stihl chainsaw. I discovered the problem after noticing a trail of oil leading to the saw. A fairly long trail. Took me about a half hour to clean up.
Thanks for the video.
You're Welcome...
Been fighting this type of cap on my Stihl pole pruner bar oil cap for years, thanks Steve I'll be checking this today.👍👍
You're Welcome...
Thank you! I didn't realize I could reset it and bought a new one.
No worries!
Great tip..ill check mine.. over here in France
Thanks Steve, love your videos. I do miss questions with April; you make a great team!
Glad you like them!
Thanks for sharing this information with us !!!!!😊🙏👍❤️
My pleasure
Splashing 50:1 mix is one thing, "splashing" bar oil is quite another. Thanks so much, Steve.
Had it happen once…learned something today! Thanks. 👍
Glad to help
Always a handy hint worth knowing, thanks Steve.
You're Welcome...
Nice tip Steve! I never realized how those gas caps closed. Thanks! 👍👍
You're Welcome...
Never encountered that problem, but now i know how to fix it if I do!
Right on
Thanks. Really...
Yesterday I just had this issue with my old km 130, and also with my ms 200 saw ( oil cap ) a few years ago.
Thanks again Steve!
You're Welcome...
Thanks for the tips Steve those things made me crazy.
Glad to help
Sthil is discontinued some of these fuel caps on some of the products with a screw in fuel cap with a rubber seal now. Husqvarna has a nice fuel cap on the xp chain saws. They designed the cap with a flip out lever for removal of the cap and installing the cap. Once it's screwed in the lever folds in. Really neat.
Excellent tip !!! It took me a while but I figured that out. Thanks Steve !!!
Right on
Haven’t experienced the issue yet; so I’m pre-armed if and when it does crop up. Cheers Steve for a great tip.
Good information man ! Cheers 🍻
Thank You...
Thank you, Steve. I have a sthil chain saw with that style cap, and while I haven't any problems, it's nice to see the sign's of them wearing out
You're Welcome...
You helped me out. A slight leak around the gas cap, and stinky fumes. So I placed the MS 261 C outside for the night and will check it out in the morning. I cleaned the tank and cap with a soapy rag and dried it, but still fumey smell, and it was damp with mixed gas around the cap. Then I saw this video. Thanks.
You're Welcome...
Yep, I'm guilty of that also on my own Stihl Trimmer LOL Great demonstration Steve
Right on buddy! Thank You...
Awesome tip SteveO, thanks for taking one for the team so we don’t go down the path of leakiness 😂! Definitely deserve a beverage after that pointer, hey wait a minute…. Where was the almighty beverage???🤔 hope you and April have a fantastic weekend! Cheers brother 🍻🍻🥂🥂
👍👍👍. Thanks Steve
You're Welcome...
Hi Steve, Thanks for the tip. Hope you and April are safe from the fires. Praying for our western Canadians, Roland.
Thank you sir and have a blessed day America
I have this cap on a new chainsaw head for my kombi unit. Was fine when it sat on the ground but the second I wall mounted it the bar oil leaked out. Thanks for the vid, I'll go have a play with the cap now!
You're Welcome...
Thanks buddy this does my head in every time ❤
Any time!
I like and use Still equipment. I have multiple saws a weed eater, and a pole saw. Some of my older saws have the old style caps. I really prefer those. Heck, I'd pay more for them!!!
I agree!
As always, I enjoy you shows Steve.
I guess I'm lucky as I've used those caps on the equipment at work and at home and never had that happen to me. It's something for me to keep in mind for the future though!
Right on
Very interesting and informative video! Thank you for your hard work! 💕😚
Good to know, thanks
You're Welcome...
thanks 4 the tip.
No problem!
Thanks for another great tip! I have had this happen to me before and it took me a while to figure it out.
Thanks Steve.
You're Welcome...
I have several fuel/oil caps on my Stihl equiptment. Never had an issue YET, but this is a great heads up Steve. What no Peils beer
Right on
good one steve
Life saver!
Thanks
You're Welcome...
Thank you Sir
🤔 Interesting, Thanks Steve 👍🏻
You're Welcome...
Another good video, Steve!
Thank You...
Great video on this matter of tooles gas Cap fitting on the tank opening Steve
Great video! Thanks!
Thank You...and You're Welcome...
None of my stihls have those but good to know 👍
Cheers bro!
Stihl had a HUGE problem with these caps some years back. Forest firefighters were greeted with gas spewing at them when they went to refill their saws on the go. It was such a problem that the US Forest Service banned Stihl saws for their firefighters until Stihl fixed the problem. Immediately, some aftermarket people jumped in and offered a modification/fix for a mere $100...lol. But Stihl got on it right away and the aftermarket fix disappeared. I don't know how that didn't damage/ruin Stihl, but it didn't. A great example of the German engineers over-engineering something.
That explains why my 260 XL leaks bar oil. Thanks Steve-O!
Steve that reminds me of the song Turn, Turn, Turn.
Right on
Yes one turn deserves another. 😂
Thanks for the video. I’ve been lucky with my two Stihl saws…nary a problem with either.
Good to hear
Hate those caps, especially on the chainsaw oil tank. Always gives me issues. Thanks for showing how to reset the cap.
You're Welcome...
Previous commenter says non-existent problem. Well, I've had that problem with the cap, and I'll bet there are thousands of others who have also experienced it, or Stihl would not have issued a recall.
Thanks for the video.
Yeah I have been caught out with that. Thanks from Ireland.
You're Welcome...
Thanks, saved some money. Beers on me.
Had this problem with my chainsaw and couldn't figure out why it wasn't locking properly. Not pushing it in first was why, thanks for the tip Steve.
You're Welcome...
YOU ROCK 💎💎💎
YOUR a magician Steve 💯✔️. From Melbourne AUSTRALIA 👍🤠
Dang it I bought a new one. I just checked the old one and it's exactly what you said
Thanks, I discovered the other handle on my blower.😀
I never had that problem before. I filled one up before and totally forgot to put the fuel cap back on and got fuel everywhere. But never had problems locking the cap back on.
Gee…. Funny how they have to make a simple screw on gas cap so complicated.. maybe Stihl could get one of their engineers to check and see how other manufacturers do theirs…
Wow that's something I don't have one but I'll tell anybody that has one of these Stihl that know about your Channel
Glad my 2018 FS38 wacker has the screw on cap. Geese! 😊
So now we all need an owners instruction manual 📙 for the damn gas/oil caps. 🤯
Cool!!
Very cool
Thank You...
In other words Stihl designed a cap that is too complex for common use. The older design caps that aren't "tooless" worked fine.
I agree!
i cant tell u how many times I've cursed that cap design on my Stihl gear.. Thank you
You're Welcome...
Grrrrrr……. Hate those caps on my saw!! Thanks Steve! Things get a little easier once you understand…..
Thanks Steve. My trimmer has the screw cap but two of my saws have them. Have gas one up put the cap on and went to start it and had a leg covered with gas. Not fun lol. I still like my old 041 Farm Boss with the screw caps on top. I'm to old school, if it's not broke don't fix it.😁 James out.
Interesting. Now I need to check my saws. Maybe this is why my bar oil is always leaking!
I have a 25 year old echo trimmer and never had a problem with the gas cap.🤯
Years ago My stihl did the same thing. I played and played with it. Finally gave up and bought a new cap.
The gas cap product recall applied for me as well.
First owner was my 90 year old father in law
Stihl dealer STILL replaced it … Something about “strict liability” or some such.
Either way, pay for a gas cap if you need to. SERIOUS BURNS ARE FOREVER!!!
That information is worthy à premium can of beer mate 😋🍺
Absolutely
I took notes Steve. I am not brand loyal, I have both Husqvarna and Stihl equipment. Echo has the slot in the pull handel that fits the oil and fuel caps from what I have seen. Each brand has its pros and cons I guess. Either way, great tip Steve, learned something new that I never knew before. 👍🏻👍🏻
Hi Steve n April. Shaun n Andrea here, from Maidenhead, near Windsor, England. I thought I'd msg (1st time - ever, to anybody!) to your most recent video, as maybe you're more likely to see it.. Firstly, brilliant channel n vids n beers - working my way through all your videos (n beers - my local is Marlow/Rebellion brewery, by The Thames). I love your work, BTW. Maybe a video on putting LM grease or general oil in the gearbox of my HS(something) attachment on my Stihl MS 026 chainsaw. Cheers guys.
Great tip👍🏻 tho I've not personally experienced that problem, can see how its a simple mistake to make. I have had to replace hardened/cracked o-rings in fuel and oil caps of older units.
Right on
I own several. Never had this issue
Great tip 😂
Thank You...
Steve my man!!!🎉🎉🎉🤠💪💪💪🤙🤙🤙💯💯💯👌👌👍
What more could I possibly say, STIHL RUNS THE YARD. 😊👍🏿 #stihlpower #stihlisyourdaddy #stihlrunstheyard
Must be a hit or miss design.
So many complaints about these caps but mine have never given me any problems, easy to remove or replace and never a leak.
I like them.
Good information as usual Steve
Where's the beer tho?
OOPS!
Just what i was wondering 😄
Show of hands, who prefers the advantages of that design over a simple single peice injection molded, threaded on nylon cap with a vent and readily replacable oring?
Happened many times with my chain saws now I find it easier to reset them by hand, kind of messy with the bar oil cap.
I have a couple of Sthils. I can honestly say, I HATE THOSE CAPS! 😁😁
I agree!
Great tip, haven’t had that issue in the 10 years I’ve had Farm Boss 271… sooner or later I guess!
What happened to your beer 🍺 are you on the wagon?😂☮✌🏻
Also do not over fill tank or it will not lock😊
Yes- especially the bar oil on saws. They are also fairly sensitive to dirt and debris and need cleaning at times, dirt is more of an issue with the bar oil due to the stickiness plus location.
I was nearly hospitalised with a damn nervous breakdown - with a normal one.just like my uncle!!!
Ah yes...the flippy cap (or flipping cap). Reminds me I need to replace the recalled caps with newer ones I bought. The flippy part broke off my gas cap due to the seal swelling and locking it up. Hopefully the new ones will hold up with the lower use my saw gets now. Good video Steve and appreciated.
Too bad Stihl tries to simplify something by making it more complicated. Its not a good engineering principle.
I did a radio ad for Still and they gave me a blower for free. It turns out I overpaid! Of all the bone headed things: " Hey let's take something that works perfect and mess it up" I can't believe they still use that horrible design! When it's taking your helper over 3 minutes just to get the gas cap on there's something very very wrong! Also it's great how they made a four stroke engine that not only rips your fingers out of the socket when you try to start it, takes 5 million pulls to start it and requires that you mix to cycle oil in the gas! What's the point! I knew I was lying about how great it was when I did that ad and I still feel bad to this day!
With true "4 stroke" engines, there would need to be and oil reservoir and oil pump setup, which requires the engine to be used in and "upright" position mostly. The "4-mix" engine technology, with basically a 4 stroke type engine but mixed oil/fuel, allows for the better efficiency of 4 stoke vs 2-stroke, but with the ability to use the power head in various orientations. Trimming (upright), edging (on its side), or with pole pruner attached (tilted back 45°-80/90°) as examples. Additionally, not having oil, reservoir, oil pump etc., allows for minimizing both bulk, and weight of the equipment. 🙂
@@toddwilkinson621 you are correct sir, but trust me: don't A still 4 stroke blower! I can't speak for any other devices such as a four stroke weed eater or a 4 stroke blower made by another company because I don't own any of those, but trust me on this one; just the gas cap alone is reason enough to not buy one. You brought up efficiency, come to think of it. it really was not efficient: it used about the same amount of gas to do 6 houses but ended up taking longer than a similar cubic centimeter two stroke because it didn't rev up as high therefore it didn't put out as much air. I will end on a positive note: Once you finally got it started it was really quiet.
Hey, do you have any tips on how to maintain those fuel caps (greasing them, etc)?
I must be getting really old, somebody has reinvented the wheel aka gas cap. I'll stick to my decades old tried and true power equipment. Chainsaw, weedeaters, tiller, all my dad's old equipment that still runs just fine. But I always enjoy your videos Steve...cheers with a beer!!
I replaced mine and good ever since
Right on
