  • Once again my good friend and Belfast history buff, Reg, over there in Carmarthen Wales, has sent me another wonderful, well researched, video on Belfast.
This time Reg, ( Wizened Owl Histories ), presents a slide show detailing the,
'14 Industries that Built Belfast, where Belfast/NI Led the World'.
Sit back and enjoy as he leads us through them.

That is interesting Belfast history and I enjoyed it very much. Thanks Tom and Reg. The audio is very low though.

Thank you Mike, Sorry about the audio volume - I had to turn it way down in ny software, and when I ran it after editing it was spot on, so I have no idea why it came out this way. Probably as I stated re an earlier upload, by the time it gets published by UA-cam it will have gone through at least three different hands (and software) - mine, Tom's and YT. I try to make allowances but have no control over the end output. Apologies. Still, I'm glad you enjoyed the content and the sound of my voice!!!! I always take note of the comments and try to act positively, so thank you again, your comments are valued.

The sound was low Mike. I have it working on my computer at full volume. It was great that Reg included all the wording. Reg is a great guy, making this and then sending it to me for the channel. I owe him a huge debt of gratitude!

Very interesting. Thanks for uploading. In the book I'm writing relating to events in the early 1870s I mention Belfast being called "Linenopolis" and also "The Athens of Ireland" - must have been a sight to behold in those days 😊

Wow Shawry! You are writing a book about Belfast. Great stuff! I would love to give you 'a shout out', when you are ready!
Yes it would be fascinating to go back in time to witness it all! Best wishes from the Belfast Castlereagh hills.

Kind comment GC3799. Sometimes I feel that NI doesn't get the credit it deserves from the UK in general. The plaudits always seem to go to London and the English, while the rest of the UK gets ignored somehow. Some time ago I read a comment on the Titanic which was thus: "I know all about the Titanic, but where was it launched?" I responded: "After she was built in Belfast it was transported to Southampton and launched there!!" (I'm ashamed to say I like to add a little sarcasm on occasion}!
The UK has a lot to thank NI for, and the reason I chose to make this presentation. Like you, it holds a special place in my heart. Thanks CG.

Thanks GC. This of course was all the work of my old friend Reg. A Belfast man now living in Wales. I'm afraid I did nothing but accept it and publish it on my channel. But Reg will appreciate your encouraging comment GC.

@@reggriffiths5769 ….Remarkable and well presented thank you very kindly it’s factually and correct. I especially enjoyed the fact you made mention that someone running those rope work machines could lose a finger or two. Just so happens my own father once worked in that factory from 1945 to around 1953 and somehow had his fingers and the end of one of his thumb’s twisted off in the twine on his right hand. This happened in around 1953, as fait would have it the company paid out a small claim that my father used to purchase the house I once lived in and was born in. Years later in 1964…my father sold the house and the proceeds from the sale were used to help our family immigrate to Canada. Between 1953 and 1964 my father worked in the Ship Yard. He told me prior to his death in 2013 that the wages in the Rope Work’s when he started was 19 shillings and six pence for a six day work week. His Mother took, 13 shillings to help run their own house hold. The rest my father enjoyed with his mates on a Saturday night at a local pub. You’d be hard pressed to find anyone today that would do those kinds of tasks and be happy with their lot in life.

Brilliant video Reg, so much to learn and take in,its half an hour of solid education i really enjoyed it,as regards to volume i just turned my hearing aids up and that did the trick,I'm as deaf as a post especially in my left ear, anyway great stuff.

Yes Chris my hearing is rubbish too, even with the hearing aids in. I just turned the volume up to maximum. I thought Reg did a grand job. I didn't know about some of these industries and I live here!!!!!!

Hi Tom - very low volume on this one.

    • @reggriffiths5769

Hi Colin. Others have mentioned this, including myslf. We don't what the problem was for it was OK in the upload - see comments below. The only suggestion that Tom and I can make is to increase the volume level on your Master volume control (In the system as well as your standard control). My only guess since it has happened before, is that I send the video to Tom, and he then uploads it to YT, which means that three different processes are being used, meaning three different softwares/programmes. In my system I have various sound controls, so that when I create a video/slide show, I check the volume to ensure it is at the right level. Beyond that I have no further control - and yes, I'm also having the drop in audio. My apologies, but nothing I can do to change it - it would have to be done (presumably) by YT. Having said that, my narrative is the same as the on-screen texts, so you could go full screen to read them. Hope this helps. Reg

Oh dear Colin. Reg sent me this video via e mail and not Whatsapp as I previously said! I'm afraid I got mixed up and made a blunder!
Best wishes from the Belfast Castlereagh hills.

Hi Russell, as explained below, I do make apology although my version was 100% after my edit and replay at upload. What happens at YT after that is beyond my control. I have now watched it on YT and I agree entirely with all the comments. Might I suggestr you try again, but do employ your master volume on your system as I had to do, as the ordinary YT or your standard volume control will not be enough. I assure you that I am more disappointed than everyone else, especially as I had to turn the volume down on my editing!

    • @TomMcClean
      @TomMcClean  Місяць тому +2

Hi Russel. Yes the sound was indeed low. At 75 Reg is no longer a youngster. His strength is weak.
If you turn up the volume on your computer or tablet you will get it. It also helps that Reg is reading the words that appear below each slide.
Best wishes from the Belfast Castlereagh hills.
